{wall whom it may conce'm':
Be it known that I, Gannon F. Slsnow'nn, a citizen of the United States residing at East Fssex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couch-Beds, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of m invention which I at present deem prefera le.
For a detailed description of the present form of my invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part.
thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed and Fig. 2 an end view thereof.
My invention consists in an improved arrangement for operating the two parts of a telescopin bed wherein one part is of slightly sma ler dimensions than the other,
-so as to pass freely thereunder, although the metallic mattress fabric in the two parts is on nearly the same level, so that when the two are drawn together a half bed {)sedformed and when spread apart a whole Referring to the drawing A and B are respectively the extensible and stationary halves of a telescoping bed, the former being slightly shorter and slightly lower than the latter, so as to-pass freely thereunder. The art A has also but two legs, the inside e ge resting and traveling on guides or cross-bars b, b, of stationary art B with intervening rollers a, a. Exten ing from end to end of part B, and on a lower level than the bars b b is a rod-or rock shaft C, mounted in bearings on the under side of said bars. Since the rock shaft is below the bars b b the part A can move more freely to and fro above it. On each end of the rock shaft C is fastened a lever D, of which only one lever is fully shown in Fig. 1, and the lower end of each lever D swings approximately from one side to the other of the stationary part B and is connected by link E to the corresponding outer leg of the part A. The levers D may have for convenience a leather loop (1 at the outer end, and are offset as indicated to engage the adjacent links E which pass back of the legs of th stationary section.
When the levers D are turned to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 2, the part,
part A will travel freely by means of rollers.
a, a, and the casters on its two legs. -This produces an extremely simple, cheap and effective arrangement, the rock shaft C belng out of the way beneath the mattress fabrlcs of both beds and not in a position to interfere with the free passage of the art A mto and out of its closed position. oreover the part travels horizontally into and out of its two positions without being lifted at either edge.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A couch bed comprising a stationary sectlon provided with legs, transverse guide bars connecting said legs near the top of the section and serving as the sole transverse braces for the legs, an extensible section one side of which is slidingly su ported by said guide bars, the other side 0 said extensible sect on being provided with legs, a lon tudinally disposed rock shaft supported the guide bars of the stationary section, connections between said rock shaft and said extensible section, said connections being within the stationary section, and means for actuating said rock shaft.
2. A couc bed comprising a stationary section provided with legs, transverse guide bars connecting said legs near the top of the section and serving as the sole transverse braces for the legs, an extensible section one side of which is provided with supporting devices slidingly engaging the up r faces of said guide bars, the other side 0 said extensible section being provided with legs, a longitudinally disposed rock shaft supported by the under faces of the guide bars of the stationary section, connections between said rock shaft and said extensible section, said connections being within the stationary section and means for actuating said rock shaft.
3. A couch bed comprising a stationary section provided with legs, transverse guide bars connecting said legs near the top of the section and serving as the sole transverse Q mae sea sidefof which is -.provided with supgorting with the legs of the extensible section, and devices siidingly engaging the up er aces of a hand lever secured to said rock shaft. said guide bars, the other side 0 said exten- In Witness whereof I have hereunto set sible section being provided with legs, :1 Ionmy hand before two subscribing witnesses, 5 gitudinaiiy disposed rockshaft suported by this 16th day of January, 1911.,
the under face of the guide bars 0 the stationary section, levers secured to the ends GEURGE SISBOWER' of said rock shaft and having their lower I Witnesses: ends within the stationary section, links L. T. SHAW, w connecting the. lower ends of said levers 'C. B. Trrus.
