MIXIN G-MAGHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915'.
Application filed November 23, 1914. Serial No. 873,586.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr F. PRoKoP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hay Springs, in the county of Sheridan and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixing- Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvell'lQIliS in mixing machines and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the mixing of concrete and the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved machine of this general character wherein the mixing element continuously rotates during the mixing operation and at the time the same is being emptied.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved mixing machine whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a mixing machine constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a frag mentary elevational view of the upper extremity of an upright, herein included, and illustrating in detail one of the bearings carried thereby.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a suitably supported frame having disposed transversely thereacross adjacent one extremity the shaft 2 adapted to he operatively connected, as at 3, in a conventional way with the motor 4: also operatively supported by the frame 1 but preferably adjacent the opposite end thereof. Projecting laterally from the frame 1 adjacent the end thereof provided with the shaft 2 is a supplemental frame 5 provided at its outer extremity with the upright 6 provided adjacent its opposite extremities with the bearings 7, one of said bearings being disposed a predetermined distance below the horizontal planeof the shaft 2, for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
Operatively engaged with the shaft 2 through the medium of a universal joint 8 is an elongated shaft section 9, one extremity whereof being adapted to be supported by one of the bearings 7, said bearings be ing herein disclosed as substantially hookshape in form so that the shaft section 9 may be readily applied or removed therefrom, for a purpose which will be self-evident. The shaft section 9 is disposed through the mixing element 10, herein disclosed as in the form of a barrel and having its lower end closed while its opposite or open end is intersected by the spider 11 suitably afiixed to the shaft section 9. The closed end 12 of the mixing element is also fixed to the shaft section 9 whereby it will be perceived that such element will be caused to rotate with the section 9. With the shaft section 9 engaged with the upper bearing 7 it will be perceived that the ingredients to be mixed may be readily deposited within the mixing element through the open face thereof, while the same will be readily discharged from the mixing element when the shaft section 9 is caused to engage with the lower bearing 7, it being understood that such lower bearing is positioned a suflicient distance below the shaft 2 as to dispose the mixing element on such an inclination as to permit the axial rotation thereof to facilitate the discharge of its contents.
lVhile any means may be employed for supporting the frame 1, I find it of advantage to use conventional wheels 1d whereby the apparatus may be of a portable type and be conveyed from one point to another with convenience and facility as the requirements of practice may necessitate.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a mixing machine constructed in accordance with my inven tion is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein. shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a support, a frame projecting laterally from the support, an upright carried by the outer extremity of the lateral frame, said upright extending above and below the support, open bearings carried by the opposite extremities of the support, a rotatable mixing element including a flexible shaft operatively engaged with the support, said shaft being adapted for detachableengagement with the bearings of the upright of the frame, and means for imparting axial rotation to the flexible shaft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH F. PROKOP.
