CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 7, 1911.
1591,1629 I Patented Jan. 26, 1915.
THE NORRIS PETERS CO., PHOTO-LITHO.. WASHINGTON, D. C,
mvrrnn STATES PATENT orrron CHARLES H. DAVIS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB, TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIAE.
CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DAvIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to overhead line structures and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive clamp for trolley wires and other electric conductors.
In Patent N 0. 949,885, granted to me on February 22, 1910, have shown and described a trolley clamp of the same general character as that of my present invention, in which jaw members for gripping the trolley conductor are provided with means for drawing them toward each other laterally as they are driven together longitudinally until they are directly opposite each other.
My present invention is designed to reduce the number of parts, to provide a swivel connection between the jaw members and the part to which the hanger rod is secured and to make the two jaw members identical so that they may be cheaply manufactured in large quantities.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a trolley clamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views of the clamp jaw members.
Referring to the drawings, the clamp here shown comprises a pair of identical jaw members 1 and 2 and a swivel nut 3. Each of the jaw members is provided with an arm lwhich projects inwardly from one end of its body portion to which it is substantially parallel, a curved boss 5 at one edge, a hook projection 6 at the other edge and an end projection 0r ear 8. The outer surface of the body of each jaw member is provided with a beveled recess 9 to receive the arm l of the other jaw member.
The hook projections 6 are adapted to engage grooves in the trolley wire 10 with which the clamp is associated but may be modified as desired to grip a wire or cable which is of circular or some other form in cross section. The arm 4: of each jaw member has a beveled inner surface that engages Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 19315. Serial No. 601,347.
the recess 9 of the other member and, since the engaging surfaces are beveled, the jaw members are drawn toward each other as they are driven together longitudinally, in assembling the clamp on the conductor.
The nut 3 has a flange 11 which is so held between the bosses 5 as to provide a swivel connection when the parts of the clamp are assembled.
It is evident that the jaw members may be locked together by a few well directed blows of a hammer and that there is no machine work necessary except that of tapping the swivel nut 3. In order to avoid the possible loosening of the clamp in service, the ears 8 are bent over, as shown in Fig. 1, when the jaw members are directly opposite each other. The swivel nut 3 may be screwed upon the lower end of a hanger rod 12 or other suitable supporting device.
The shape and position of the bosses 5 may be varied in order to cover a greater or less portion of the flange 11, and various modifications in size and detail may be effected within the spirit and scope of my in vention. In fact, I believe that the clamp structure is broadly new and that it may be advantageously utilized as a cable connector or similar device, and I desire that the scope of my invention shall be limited only by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A clamp comprising a swivel nut having an end flange, a pair of interchangeable jaw members severally provided with a beveled body surface, an offset arm of approximately one half the length of the body portion and projecting substantially parallel thereto and having a beveled inner face, a hook projection at one edge and a curved boss at the other, the oifset arm of each member cooperating with the beveled body surface of the other to draw the members laterally toward each other as they are forced together longitudinally, and the flange of said nut being loosely confined between said curved bosses.
2. A clamp comprising a nut having a bottom flange, a pair of interchangeable jaw members severally provided with a beveled body surface, an offset arm projecting substantially parallel to the body portion and having a beveled inner face, a hook projection at one edge and a curved boss at the other, the said nut flange being loosely confined between said bosses to form a swivel connection, and the offset arm of each member cooperating with the beveled body surface of the other to draw the hook projections laterally toward each other as the jaw members are forced together longitudinally.
3. A clamp comprising a pair of interchangeable jaw members severally provided with an offset arm of approximately one half the length of the body portion and projecting substantially parallel thereto and having a beveled inner face, the arm of each member engaging the surface of the other member substantially throughout its length to draw the members laterally toward each other as they are forced together longitudinally and means for holding the jaw members in clamping position comprising end projections for each member bent over to engage the adjacent end of the other member.
A clamp comprising a pair of interchan eable jaw members severally provided with a beveled body surface and an offset arm of approximately one half the length of the body portion and projecting substantially parallel thereto and having a beveled inner face, the arm of each member cooperating substantially throughout its length with the beveled body surface of the other member to draw the members laterally toward each other, and means for holding the jaw members in clamping position comprising longitudinally extending ears for each member bent over to engage the adj acent end of the other member.
5. A clamp comprising a pair of interchangeable aw members severally provided with an offset arm of approximately one half the length of the body portion and jaw members severally 4 provided with a beveled body surface, an offset arm extending substantially parallel to the body portion and having a beveled inner face, a hook projection at one edge and a curved boss at the other for partially loosely confining said end flange, the offset arm of each member cooperating with the beveled body surface of the other to draw the members laterally toward each other as they are forced together longitudinally, and means for holding the jaw members in clamping position comprising end projections for each member bent over to respectively engage the adjacent end of the other member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of Dec.
CHARLES H. DAVIS.
