Description

4I, HARLOWF. CHAPIN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain Improvementsin Animal Pokes, `,of which the 4following isa specication. j Myinventionrelates to that class of animal pokes `in which one or more sharp `points are forced against `the neck of the animal in attempting to push over or leap a fence. i
In thedrawingy p i. i
Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention in the di,- rection of .the arrow, fig. `2.1 A
Figure 2 is a vertical section `at the dotted line x The neck-piece A of my improved poke is composed of side bars b, tied `together-toward the lower end by a cross-girano, and connected over the neck of the anir gether in `any ordinarymanner. l y -The upper portion ofthe bars b are tapered oli" and l `rounded. slightlyto fit the' neck and prevent chaiing, and apad, e, ot'` heavy leather or other suitable mai `terial, is attached under the strap, which supports the Weight of the poke and cushions it upon the animal, wherebythe hair is prevented from wearing oi, as is i lunavoidably the case in the usejof the ordinary poke. 'A` pivot-rod, j', passes throught-he lower extremity of the side bars,\upon`wl'1ich the double staleB is suspendethas shown. l The bars a oi`.tl1is` stale are connected together at `the upper end by the crossegirt g, and` their distance `apartis such that they just passbetween the bars b of the neck-piece, and therefore rest fupon the rod f `very near to the latter, as` shown. By s means the `rod cannot bebrolien by any ordinary'stl n upon the stale, thus avoiding aserious diilculty with pokes of the usual` constructiom In the gi'rt ,c of, theneek-pieee I provide a shallow recess or recesses, shown in fig. 2, which receive the f heads of prickpins i, and thus retain them' in posidion. p Y
` Springs sare placedjupon thepins, bearing at one enduponthe` inner'- shouldercf the heads, and resti'ng at the other in recesses formed inthe cross-giro g lof` the stale,.whieh liesopposite or nearly so to the Letters Patent No. 112,546, dated March 14, 1871.
i same manner as an ordinary poke.I
mal by the strap al, the ends of which are buckled to- HvirRovEt/IENT` IN ANiMAL PoKEs.
`TheSehedu1e referred to in these Letters-Patent and making parl: of the same.
pass throughl elongated openings in the` girt g, and when .the stale is pushed against any object andthus swung upon` the pivot f these points are exposed and forced into the neck ot' the animal.
'lo preventthe pins and springs from becoming detached acheckstrap or stop, n, is secured to the girts v g and c, as shown in fig. 2, which limits the movement of the stale, and consequently retains the springs compressed against the heads of the pins. If, l1o\vever,
the springs be forcibly compressed without moving the sta1e,both pins and springs may be removed at any, time, leaving the implement to beoperated in the It. will be seen that the prick-pins, being loose in their places, accommodate themselves to the swing of' the upper' end of' the stale, while they are veryeasy to attach or remove, and comparatively inexpensive in construction.
`Bythe use of the neck-strap and pad d e the'construction of the poke is much simplified, and the timber for the side bars, which usually is required to be of the best quality in order to bend in the neck, may be of the ordinary cheaper varieties, while at the same time the parts may be cut from the plank without waste, and no unusual skilll isnecessary in the manufacture.
The implement is also more -easily attached andremoved than the old forms, and vis less liable to chafe and bruise the neck of the animal.
The 'strap Z and pad e may be secured to the bars b in any suitable or convenient manner.
That I claim as myinvention isl. The prick-pin or pins i and spring orA springs s, applied to the girts g and c, substantially as described, in combination with the check-strap n, for the, purposes set forth. p
2. rlhe neck-strap d and pad e, in combination with the side bars and fixed cross-bar of' an ordinary animal poke, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
