Be it known that I, PERCY W. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Setting Mechanism for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for so supporting and turning the drive wheels of locomotives that the valve mechanism may be properly set.
According to this invention, provision is made for lifting the wheels from the track and for revolving them without separating or losening the connecting rods and other such parts of the driving mechanism.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a truck for two of the driving wheels, comprising roller-carrying frames which are connected by rods provided with adjusting devices, by means of which said frames may be moved to and from each other to accommodate wheels of different sizes and by which also the said drive wheels may be lifted from the track. Some of the rollers carried by said frame are supporting or track rollers and are adapted to rest on the track, while other rollers in the frames, which are drive rollers, rest. on said firstmentioned rollers and also bear against the drive wheels of the locomotive. The drive rollers are connected by suitable gearing with power-applying mechanism, the organization being such that as the drive rollers are revolved, the supporting or track rollers are also revolved, causing the truck to traverse the track and the drive wheels, with which they are connected, to revolve as the locomotive moves back and forth. In this way the locomotive may, without disconnecting the connecting rods and similar parts, he moved back and forth on the track and the wheels revolved or turned to the desired extent in either direction to enable the attendant to give the proper set or adjustment to the valve mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a locomotive resting on a truck, with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of part of a railway track, with my improvedtruck resting thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the roller-carrying frames with the supporting or track rollers therein and with the driving roller removed. Fig. at shows a section through one of the rollercarrying frames and the rollers carried thereby. l
A portion of a railway track is indicated at A, and some of the drive wheels of a. locomotive are indicated at B and C.
The truck comprises four roller-carrying frames D, each comprising an end piece (Z and two parallel side pieces 03 between which are arranged and in which are journaled two supporting or track rollers E, E. These rollers extend a short distance below the frame and are adapted torest on the track A. A third roller F is mounted in open bearings f in the frame, and bears on the supporting or track rollers in the manner indicated in Fig. 4:. These rollers F are adapted to bear against the drive wheels of the locomotive, in the manner indicated in Fig. 1.
The roller-supporting frames are con nected by rods Gr. Each pair of frames is connected by two rods which extend through the end portions 03, are threaded and receive adjusting and clamping nuts 9. By means of these devices the distance between each pair of roller-carrying frames may be adjusted to acommodate drive wheels of different diameters and by means of such devices also two of the drive wheels of the 10- comotive may be lifted from the rails, in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. Each two driving rollers F on directly opposite sides of the track are connected by a shaft II in such manner that said rollers and the shaft revolve together. This connection may be made in any suitable way as by forming the rollers with square or angular openings, receiving squared or angular portions of the shaft. The truck thus constructed may be adjusted in the manner before described, to raise a pair of locomotive driving wheels from the track and in order to rotate the rollers E, E, F and thus cause the locomotive driving wheels to revolve and the locomotive to move back and forth over the track, I provide suitable mechanism for positively rotating the shafts H to which the driving rollers F are connected.
So far as some features of my invention are concerned any suitable driving means may be used, but I prefer to employ a motor M which may be suspended from the locomotive or may be mounted on wheels on adapted to traverse a track or platform adjacent the track on which the locomotive rests. This motor is connected by a train of gears n, 11/, n a with a pinion h on one of the shafts H and this shaft carries a sprocket wheel N connected by a drive chain 0 with a sprocket wheel N on the other shaft H. The gear wheels n, 17/, 12 n are supported in a suitable gear casing P and the drive chain 0 is carried in a twopart casing B, R jointed at 1' in such manner that the casing may adjust itself or be adjusted to correspond with the position of the two shafts H. Rollers r are mounted in the casing at the oint r and support and guide the chain in such manner that it is always sufficiently taut whatever he the dis tance between the shafts H.
The different parts of the truck are assembled and applied to the drive wheels of the locomotive in the manner before explained and when the roller-carrying frames have been so drawn toward each other as to raise the driving wheels of the locomotive the motor may be started in either direction and reversed when required in such manner as to cause the locomotive driving wheels to revolve and the locomotive to move back and forth at the desired speed over the track and stop whenever required to make the requisite valve adjustments.
It will thus be seen that by my improvements it is not necessary to disconnect the connecting rods and such similar parts of the locomotive as has been the custom heretofore and a single attendant may control the motor and adjust the valves, thus very greatly reducing the expense of the operation.
I claim as my invention l. Mechanism for use in setting locomotive valves, comprising a truck having connected roller-carrying frames, track engaging rollers carried thereby for lifting the driving wheels of a locomotive and for driving said wheels while above the track, and means for rotating said rollers while resting on the track to cause the truck to traverse the track and to rotate said locomotive drive wheels while out of contact with the track.
2. Mechanism for use in setting locomotive valves, comprising a truck having roller-carrying frames, adjustable connecting rods therefor, track rollers in the frames, drive rollers in the frames resting on the track rollers and adapted to bear against the drive wheels of the locomotive, and means for rotating said driving rollers.
3. Mechanism for use in setting locomotive valves, comprising a truck having roller-carrying frames, adjustable connecting rods therefor, rollers in said frames adapted to rest on the track, drive rollers in the frames resting on said first mentioned rollers and adapted to bear upon the locomotive drive wheels, a motor, and gearing connecting the motor with the drive rollers.
4. Mechanism for use in setting locomotive valves, comprising a truck having roller carrying frames, adjustable connec tions between the frames, track rollers in the frames, drive rollers in the frames resting on the track rollers and adapted to bear upon the locomotive drive wheels, shafts connecting each pair of rollers on opposite sides of the truck, gearing connecting said. shafts, a motor and gearing connecting it with the shafts.
5. Mechanism for use in setting locomotive valves, comprising a truck having roller-carrying frames, adjustable connecting rods therefor, track rollers in the frames, drive rollers resting on the track rollers and adapted to bear upon the locomotive drive.
