OLMEDO CORTEZ WYSONG, OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.
ABRASIVE APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLMEDO Con'rnz \VY- sono, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrasive Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in abrasive apparatus.
One of its objects is to provide mccha nism. comprising one or more abrasive belts supported upon pulleys carried by standards adapted to be located any desired distance apart, and provided with means for adjust- :ing the belt or belts relative to one of said standards to adjust both the upper and the lower reaches of the abrasive belt or belts to position for use by the operator.
Another object is to provide in connection with such apparatus an adjustable work supporting table adapted to be manipulated in conjunction with said belt or belts.
Another object is to provide improved means for adjusting one of the belt supporting pulleys both vertically and horizontally relative to its supporting standard.
My invention further consists in certain details of form, combination and arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the belt supporting forms. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1. Figs. 1 and are detail views of different belt support ing and shaping forms or supports. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of one of the belt supporting standards, being a section 011 line m of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the opposite belt supporting standard, being a section on line 4) o of Fig. 1. Figs. 8 and ing and shaping forms or supports.
in the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 have shown two abrasive belts A anu A mounted side by side upon driving pulleys 2 and 3 and idler pulleys 4c and Where two belts are employed one is usually coated with coarse abrasive material and the other with fine abrasive mate- Specification of Letters Patent.

preliminary work, and the other for the final or polishing operation. A single broad belt upon single driving and idler pulleys may also be employed, depending upon the work to be treated.
The abrasive belt driving pulleys 2 and 3 are rigidly mounted upon a shaft (5 which is ouflnaled upon a frame or standard B adapted to be bolted to the floor (J. Tight and loose pulleys 7 and 8 at the opposite end of the shaft 6 provide for driving the shaft (3 by means of a belt 9 from a line shaft. A. belt shifter 10 carried by the standard B enables the belt 9 to be shifted to control the movements of the shaft 6. A slotted cross-bar 11., preferably of wood is carried by a bracket 12 attached to the standard B, and the abrasive belts A A travel through the slot in said cross-bar. Mounted upon the lower fork of the cross bar 11 is a yoke-shaped bracket (4, the eye of which is adapted to receive and vertically support a detachable pin or bar 13 interposed between the belts A A to assist in holding said belts in place upon the driving pulleys 2, 3, and to prevent their interfering with each other.
The standard supporting the idler pulleys 4t and 5 comprises in connection with adjustable members mounted thereon, a base member I), which is adapted to no bolted to the floor O either close to or at a considerable distance from the standard B, depending upon the length of the abrasive belts, and the character of work chiefly required to be treated. Thus where a majority of the work to be treated is long pieces, long abrasive belts would be employed and the standards B, 1) located a considerable distance apart, while if the majority of the work was to be short pieces, short belts would be employed and the standards located closer to each other, which however would not interfere with the treatment of long pieces of work if required. Standards B, l), are thus capable of adjustment with ing member 15 seated in the bore of a post 16 forming part of the member I). Said hollow post 16 is slotted at l? and adapted to be clamped upon the member 15 to lock the parts to adjusted position. A screw rod 19 seated in and engaging the threads ed interior of a post or sleeve 18 forming part of the member D, provides for the vertical adjustment of the member 15 relative to member D. In order to rotate the screw 19 I provide a spiral gear 20 on said screw rod, which is in mesh with a spiral gear 21 on a shaft 22 carried in journals on the arm or bracket 23 of the member E, said shaft 22 being provided at its projecting end with a wrench seat to enable it to be turned to rotate the screw rod 19 and adjust the height of the member E. I vided for clamping. the plate It to its adjusted position relative to the member 1).
Substantially horizontal ways 25 are provided at the upper end of the member E, upon which ways is mounted an adjustable member F, which is adjustable relative to member E by means of a rack 26 carried by member F and a pinion 27 journaled by shaft 28 to member E and adapted to be turned by a hand wheel 29.
Mounted upon the member F, and pivotally connected thereto by means of a bolt 30 is a ,member H which is provided with journal. boxes 31, 32 to support the shaft 33 of the idler pulleys t and 5. The pivotal movement of the member H relative to member F is limited by means of a bolt 34 passing through a curved slot in the member H and threaded into the member F, and which bolt serves to lock said members together when properly adjusted. A projection 35 on the member .l-l enters between two cars 36, 37 projectin from member F, and is engaged upon opposite sides by thumb screws 39, 4O threaded through the ears 36, 37, by means of which the desired pivotal adjustment of the member H is accurately secured, and said thumb screws also assist in locking the membe H to adjusted position. The member H is also supported by means of a link 41 pivoted to an ear 4.2 proj ecting from the member H and extensively or adjustably connected to the bracket 23 by means of bolts passing through slotted openings in the link 41, and adapted to clamp the link 41 to bracket 23 so as to support the overhanging portion of the member H after being adjusted to position.
The member H is also provided with standards 43, 44: carrying a shaft or rod 41-5.
Pivotally mounted upon the rod L5 are arms 46, 47 at the free ends of which are rollers i8, 49 adapted to project between the upper and lower reaches of the respective belts A, A and to engage or bear upon the inner faces of said belts either for the purpose of tensioning said belts or for tension- A wrench is also proing and shaping said belts. Said rollers are pivotally mounted upon stud shafts 50 carried by the free ends of said arms 46 and 4:7, and are adapted to engage either the upper or lower reaches of said belts. Each of said arms 46, 1-7 is provided with an arm 51 provided with a counterweight 52 to hold the respective rollers in contact with the abrasive belts, said arms 51 being adjustable as indicated in Figs. 8 and 9 to press said rollers against either the upper or lower reach of the abrasive belts.
Slotted arms 53, 54; adjustably secured to the standards 13, D are adapted to adjustably support at their free ends 55 either stationary forms 0 of the general character indicated in Figs. 2 and 5 or rotary forms f as indicated in Fig. a to either shape or tension the abrasive belts.
K represents the base of a work supporting table. L represent vertically adjustable members which are capable of being adjusted in unison by means of two screw rods 60 threaded to the members L and provided with beveled gears 61 meshing with beveled gears (32 on the horizontal shaft 68,
which is adapted to be turned by the hand wheel 6st. The members L are provided at their upper ends with pivotally connected cross ralls 65 capable of adjustment to varying degrees of angularity by means of slot-' ted segments 66. The table top M is. pro-' vided with rollers 6: adapted to t avel crosswise of the abrasive belts uponfthe tracks or rails 65, being limited by (38 at the ends of the rails.
the stops Lid As illustrated in Fig. 1 the various parts i are adjusted to receive the work upon the work table and between said table and the lower reaches of the abrasive belts, so that the belts travel normally slightly out of con tact with the work, said belts being tellsioned by the rollers 4-8 and For treating plain or flat faced'work the belts are straight in cross section as indicated in Figs. 6 and '7, while for treating work with curved or irregular faces, such as moldings for instance, the belts are shaped in cross section by means of rotary o t ti forms as indicated in Figs. 2, 4t, and 8, to approximately the outline of the-work to be treated. The belts are then by means of a form in the hand of the operator pressed into contact with the face of the work until it is sufficiently polished.
lVhen it is desired to use the upper reach of the abrasive belts as indicated in Figs. 5
and. 9, the work table M is either lowered away from the belts, or removed from beneath the belts, whereupon the member E is. lowered until the upper reach of the belts adjacent to the idler pulleys at and 5 is low enough so that the operator can conveniently apply the work to the upper face thereof. Figs. 2 and 5 indicate a class of stationary forms adapted to support and if desired shape the belts for polishing short articles such as chair backs, and drawer fronts, while Fig. 9 indicates an adjustment of parts for polishing legs, spokes and other parts, in which the pressure of the work upon the belt between the roller 49 and the idler pulley 5 causes the belt to assume substantially the position indicated in dotted lines. The pivotal adjustment of the member H relative to member l provides for alining the idler pulleys to cause the abrasive belts to travel centrally thereon, and the adjustment of the member F relative to member E provides for securing the desired amount of slack in the abrasive belts. If desired the arms 40 and 47 may be supported upon independent stud shafts carried by the standards 4L3, 44L instead of througl'i rod 45. It will be noted that the member 1-1 overhangs the horizontally adjustable member I? so that the idler pulleys t, 5 are at one side of said member F, and that the driving pulleys are at one side of the standard B, which provides for placing very long pieces of work upon the table M without contacting with or interfering with the mechanism or supports, even though the ends of the work project beyond the driving or idler pulleys.
For ordinary purposes a single set of tensioning rollers 48, 4:9 and counterweights 52 carried as illustrated in Fig. 1 upon the vertically adjustable standard will be found to answer all requirements. Said rollers or forms and their counterweights may however tor certain classes of work be mounted upon the standard B. It is also advantageous under certain circumstances to simultaneously employ two duplicate sets of rollers 4:8, 49, or forms and countcrweights 52, one set carried upon the standard I) and the other set mounted upon the standard B.
Usually the lioor to which the standards B, D are attached will be found to give suliicient support to resist the tension of the sand belt tending to draw the driving and idler pulleys toward each other. For use if desired with unusually long or heavy belts, or where the floor support is not sufficient, I prel.era.bly provide sockets carried by the standards B, D to receive the ends of a rigid piece of timber or metal bar 81 cut to the required length, and which upon being bolted inplace serves in addition to the floor to retain the standards rigidly in place and the desired distance apart.
The i'nechanism herein illustrated and de scribed is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
