SWIMMERS ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
Application led October 10, 1914. Serial No. 866,068.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, RoNAN AC. GRADY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Swimmers Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment which is adapted to be secured to the leg of a swimmer to aid him in his forward propulsion through the water.
The details of construction, arrangement, and operation are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a swimmers leg with my improved attachment secured thereto, a section thereof being broken away to illustrate the ribs which form a portion thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment and clearly illustrating the Obliquity of the conical surface of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 ofFig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the attachment includes a plurality of ribs 4' of unequal length, thus allowing them to terminate in a sharp upper point or apex 5 as apparent in Fig. 1.
A covering 6, formed of some suitable water-tight and water resisting material, extends around the various ribs and is securely fastened to each, by looping the cloth as at 7, which loops com letely encompass each rib and, as illustrated) in Fi 3 is held thereto by the stitching or allie means 8. The continuity of the external surface of the attachment is thus preserved and allows it to glide freely through the water during the retraction of the swimmers leg which necessarily forms a part of each swimming stroke. The ribs being of unequal length and with the covering properly cut, the attachment will, when extended, by trapping the water therein define a hollow oblique cone. A cap 9 extends around the apex of the attachment and reinforces the same at this point. The lower extremity of the covering is inwardly turned to form a hem- 10 which acts in the capacity of a reinforcing band at this point. A knee strap 11 with a buckle 12 therein is rigidly secured to the walls of the collapsible receptacle will thus be positioned remote from the swimmers leg providing for the greatest tractive effort upon the water during the forward stroke and the least resistance during the return stroke. The pliability of the covering allows the receptacle to collapse during each return stroke and extend to trap the water therein during each forward stroke. The marked Obliquity of the conical surface brings the lower edge 14 of the receptacle into a plane extending substantially at right angles to the swimmers leg.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is: f
1. A leg attachment for swimmers comrisin a hollow conical shaped receptacle including longitudinal ribs of unequal length and a water proof covering therefor, said covering provided with longitudinal loops completely encompassing each rib, a cap surmounting the apex of said receptacle, a reinforcing band defining the lower open entremity thereof, and knee and ankle engaging means carried by and located at the apex and base, of said receptacle.
2. A leg attachment for swimmers comprising a'hollow receptacle of obl1 ue con1` cal contour, said receptacle lncludlng longitudinal ribs of unequal length and a water-proof covering therefor, sald covering provided with longitudinal loops completely encompassing each r1b, a cap surmounting the apex of said receptacle, a re' inforcing band defining the lower open extremity thereof, and knee and ankle engaging means carried by and located at the apex and base, of said receptacle, said knee and ankle engaging means adapted to secure the smaller wall of the receptacle against the eX ternal side of a swimmers leg.
