Description

one of the sills;` B B, the wheels, and M UNITED S TATES PATENIQEEIGEI JoSIAH PEIEEEEAND SAMUEL EIoHAEDs, .oF vALoNIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
` IIvIPRovENIENT IIN APPARATUS ToR AGING WHISKY AND oTIIER SPIRITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,485, dated March 2, 1871. Y
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSIAH PEIFFER and SAMUEL RICHARDS, of Valonia, in the county,
of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Whisky-Agi tator; and we do `hereby declare that the following is a full and I exact description of vrthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the :lettersof reference marked thereon.`
I The object of `our invention is as follows, to y J wit: When whisky is new it is impregnated- I with an essential oil, or, as it is called by dis- `tillers, fusel-oil. Itis the presence of this I substance in the liquor that gives it the taste peculiar to new whisky. 'y In time this fusel-oil passes off or I undergoes I some change chemically. It is also found that this oil will vaporize at about 110O of heat, and that the `evapora- 7 I non is hastened if thewhisky` is shaken while the heat is applied.. It is for this reason that whisky shipped from one country to another I is improved bya sea-voyage.
` Figure 1 is a top view of our invention. IA A A A A is a steamfpipe, laid on the floor I of some suitable tight room or house erected for that purpose.` BB B are three sillsof strong timber. These are tied together with other timbers, C C C C, securely framed, and bolted to B B B. On the iioor ofthe room are laid three iron rails, the same distance apart I of the sills B BB. On the under side of B B B are two or more rollers, with a groove in their edge to fit the rail. y y
Fig. 2 is a side view of our invention. B
the iron rail. 1 2 3 4 5 are barrels of I whisky placed on the frame. D is a shaft, with a coupling at S, to couple onto a steam-engine or water-wheel or other power. E is an eccentric-wheel or a crank, with a pin at t'. At H is another pin, attached to the center sill B. H O is a pitman connecting the crank i with the pin at H, Fig. 1.
The frame B -B B is loaded with any desired number of barrels of whisky, and by means of the steam tube or pipe A A A A A the roomI is heated to the required degree of heat, and by connecting the shaft D with the power its revolution causes the frame loaded with barrels to move the length of the crank in each directiomthereby agitating the whisky.
It is found by experiment that whisky can be ripened in a few weeks.
What we claim as our invention, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to.
Wit I 1. Frame B B B C C C, placedupon grooved' described.
I J OSIAH PEIFFER.
SAMUEL RICHARDS. Witnesses:
