Description

" @sind effin.
aMoNjPARK, lor GERMANVILLE, Iowa.
Letters patent No. 112,484, ama March 7, 1an.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-CUTTER'S.
l'Jflzl `Schedule referred to in these` Letters Patent and making part of the s-ame.
" `To all whom' tt mag/:concern 4. Be it known that I, AMON PARK, of Germanville, `in the county of Jefferson and State of Iowa, have' invented :anew and: useful Improvement in Straw- Cutters; and .I do hereby declare that.' the .following l is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use l the `samereference` being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part `oif vtlisspecication. This. invention :relates to anew arrangement, in hay lfand, straw-critters, of afeeding-hand or lever, in` con-` `nection withother operating parts, as wll be hereinafter described andas speeitiedin the claim.
In the accompanying'drawingl 4 Figure 1"repre'sents a frontend viewl of my irnlproved straw-cutter;
Figure 2 is aside view. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
A `epresents thestraw-cutter box. On the. front or "cutting end of the box a'steel frame Bis placed l band" fastened by screws, `as seen in the drawing.
a' rIhe knife O works on the face of thisframe, and is 4'obliquelyattached to a sash, D. This sash is made of` wood or 'other suitablematerial, and isconined and guided by the' vertical sides vof the steel frame B.
The `knife Ouis so attached to the sash that itinay be adjusted to the face [of the steel frame so as to al` l waysinakea clean cut.`
E is the working lever, by means'of which the sash is opeiated. 'lhclever is attached tothe sash by means of a cross-piece l through which is lthe workingbolt or pin F. i
The `l'nlcrumo" the lever is at the point G, onf the stand- H, where itis made adjustable. .The lever is also adjustable on. the pin F, as indicated in the. drawing.
I is therfeedinghand, which passes up obliquely through the bottom of tllebox.l The stem J of this feeding-hand is adjustably connected with'the horizontal bar K, the forward end of which bar is connected with the sash D, 'as seen at L.
It will'be seen thatthe upward motion of the sash i i will throw. the hand forward'and give the feed, and that the amount of' feed or length of the straw cut will be controlled by the position of the stem J on the horizontal bar K, 'the latter of which is'slotted to receive the stem, where it is fastened by a pin.
M is a flexible bed beneath the bottom of the box, for guiding the feedingfhand in its motion np and down.
Ihe bed is supported by springs N,fone 'on cachside of' the hand.
O is a treadle connected to the vcrticalframe P, by Y means of which the straw or other vmaterial to be cut is pressed down andl made compact near the mouth of the box, in the usual manner.
It will bc seen that'therfeed is automatic, and.l may be changed to cut long or short, asvmay be desredf Having thus described my invention, I -claim as new and desire' to secure by Letters Patent-n Y l.
The described arrangement of' thc feeding-hand J I, spring-.bed M, bar K, andreeiprocating sash I), said hand and bar being-adjustable for the purpose 'of varying their throw or inoveinen t, substantially as herein shown and described.
