Description

" onen* `wn L nnen s o r A K no N,
` Letters Patentino. 112,399, dated March 7, 1871.
, ov-nl'lwliomt mcyjconcemi" t y i` "Be it known thatLGEoRGEWELLHoUsn, of Akron, inthe county of Summit and `State of Ohio, have invented certain new andiusefnl Improvements in Fire# i Gratesof which thefollowing is a description, refer` enceibeing hadrto the accompanying drawing making jtlofthis specification. j` i 1 Figure l is a front view ofthe ire-grate. 3 `ligure2isa side view; i r i j l Figures' and 4 are detached front sections, j@ Figure 5`is a plan `vie-,w` ofthe fender. Likeletters of` reference refer to like `parts in the 3differentviews.` i i `fllhe`1iatu`r`e of thisinventin relates toa iirefgrate, i ity-he;` construction of whichis `suchthat it can be used stove or fi1`r`e-grate,ras `may be" elected, and the object thereof is `to provide "said grate with al1-evolv- Qing damper or blower,`softhat the draught can be fchauged from the topof thefre above the grate, or below` it` as the condition of theiire may need.
` "Ital @relates to thelmanner of securing `the said revolvingflblower tothe stove, so that it shall remain at` all times ,close-httingtheretm as hereinafter more w fully described and s'et forth. r i n Inthedrawinge-f" d y 1, A` represents the` body of `the stove or firelgrateand1 whichis ofthe shapeshown, and of which B"Lis` the flue, C," ignfthe' grate, and D the bottom 0r/hearth i 1 l Itvillibefoblservedthat ,theffacefm iig. 4, or the `opening to `thehre-grate,` Vilsket C, is of a circular `form, across thehorizonta` diameter of which is iixed avbaiyli, projecting from `tllel middl'efof `which is a lug, G, having` an- .inclinationupwai-(l, Fas'shown in said y iig.` 4;, thepurpose ofwhichwill presently `be shown.
`Tosaidcircnlar opening or faceE is fitted closely, but not` tightly, a ring, H, fone-half the diameter of `which is filled with a webrLI, iig. 1. `Tliedraught `openingsthereincorresponcllinsize, shape, and num- `,benito the openings in theslid'efdamper J, attached ,fibel-cto, andwhich it'isfintendedlto cover enclose on movingr ittfortliat purposegras shown in fig. 3, which represents the` openings in the web as closed by the "fdainperJ.' i i "-'In-the lmiddleof the diameter of the web referred "to, `and hence` `in thecenter` of i the iring H, is a holle, whereby saidfring is' hung pupon the lng G, the lug forming a pivotal center, on which the ring and damper revolve. y 3 i The `upward inclination given to the lnginclines wthefring topr'ess backwaljdlyf against the bar, hence thelrinnelj peripherical surface of the ring will'press close in npon the rabbet `ari` un`l theface or opening ofthe fire-grate in which itfis' fitted and revolves.
""IMPROVEMENT in- FIREAGRATES.
" `Sohe'd rei'exbr'ec,to` in thse `Letters Patent and making parl: of the saline.
`of the stove will be smoke-tight, and yet be free to revolve, for changing the position of the blower, above or below the grate, as may be'reqnired for the lire.
Inthe ordinary open iiregrate an increase of draught is obtained to the fire by the use of a blower,
which consists of a sheet-iron hood placed on-` over the front of the grate, thereby shutting out the draught from the top ofthe grate, and compelling it to enter underneathandpass` through the ignited fuel,` there- `by causing it to burn more rapidly.
, and attach it to the grate by means of -the bar and lug, above referred to, the, operation of which is as rllhe position of the web `or blower, as shown in fig. l, is such asto open the upper part of the fire-place and allow a draught iom the bottom. of the grate through the openings of the web or blower, which, however, maybe entirely closed by the sliding damper J, thereby shutting oi all the draught from below the grate, thereby saving unnecessary consumption of fuel.
'In the event that a strong draught is needed to make the tire burn more rapidly, the blower is turned from the position shown in iig. l 'to that shown in iigf, in which it will be seen that all of the `lower part of the grate is open, whereas all the space above it is closed by the blowern By thisv means the draught is diverted vfrom the upperepart of the fire-place and compelled to enter the grate from below.
V1n this second position of the web or blower the damper J may be closed or not, as may be necessary, to increase or diminishjthe draught. Y
In this arrangement of the blower it will be obvious that it is always at hand, and therefore needs but a moment Ato adjust it in either position, and which fore can be moved without changin,r the position of the blower, when so required. 4
On referring to iig. 2, it will be seen that the fine L 4Bythis meansfthe contactof the ring with the face B extends down on each side of the fire-place near in one entire piece, that is to say, the plate K and the guard Larecast in one, thereby making a much neater and cheaper fender and hearth-plate than can be made in the usual way.
nThe above-described grate or stoye can be used as either the one or the other. Vhen used as a grate or mantel fire-place it is to be brickcd up inthe chimuey, allowing only the front to he seen surrounded by the mantel.
In the event it is used as a. stove it is-mounted upon legs and stood out iu the room, as ordinary stoves are. When used in this way itis a pleasant, neat, and wcllhcoustrueted heater, having lall the advantages of a fire-place, with greater heating capacity.
Ola/M.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The revolving ring H, in combination with the stove A., substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 2. The combination of the ring E and web or biower I, inthe manner as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The bar F, having a projecting oblique lug, G, for the purpose specified.
4. The ring H, blower I, and damper J, as arranged,
incombiuation with the stove A, and operated iu the l manner as and for the purpose set forth.
