.'Anensrusf rurais, 'or ,"MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
` Leners'ratent No. 112,396, meal March 7,1871.
l y lMPRovEMENTlN STR EET-LANTERNS.
l The Schedule. referred to-i these Letters Patent and making paxt of the same.
y Beit known that `1,1*Ainarns'rns' Tuners, of Malden, i the'county of Middlesex and State of Massachus tts, have invented an `Improvement in Street-'Lan- `terns; and I"d`o .hereby declare that the following,
taken in connection` with4 the drawing which accompanies and forms part `of this'speciiication, is ,a description of my invention su'cientto enable those skilled l .in the art to practice it.
The invention relates particularly -to the construction` of street-lanterns with reference to such provision for ingress of air `to `support:combustion and egress of the volatile products of combustion as shallv "prevent currents of air or rain 'being thrown into the lantern in such manner;astoextinguish the flame'of Y 'lh'e invention consists in the peculiar construction ofthe lantern-top or cap for this purpose. p Q .lhe drawing represents a Vlantern and cap embodying the invention. Y y
A shows the lantern in front elevation. p :Bshws the lantern partly in side elevation and partly in sectional elevation. l
`C is a 'cross-section on p the line xx.
g D is a cross-section onthe line y y. v I
a denotes the anged base, by which the cap is applied tothe top of the lantern-body.
Upon this base is a short i'us tocomcal. chimney, b,
opening' at-the top in to thecap cylinder or chamber c, which chamber is sur-mounted by a dome, d.
`The bottom of the cone or chimney b opens into 4 the body of` the 1antern,and' thesrnoke and other volatile products of `combustion rising from the lamp `pass through the cone and escape in thedirection of the arrows, through `air-holes or passages Te opening through the chamber or cylinder c, small holes lf being also made in the dome, it' necessary, for the es- `cape of smoke, 850. 4
W'ithin the cylinder' cris a hollow gimrd-cylinder or tube, y, projecting down from the dome, and so made and arranged` as to formV a narrow chamber, h, be
tween it and the air-passages c.
lliebottom of'the cylinder ,l/ is less in'diameter.
than the top :of the chimney b, and `the main cylinder c is open at bottoni, leaving aspace, t, between it and the concor chimney, as seen in the drawing.
`The air-escapes or passages o are all iianked or `covered by the outer surface oi' the guard-cyliinler,
and by inspection of the drawingit will readily be seen that gusts of rain or wind,'though blown violently into the chamber c through the air-holes e, cannot be blown down into the cone, but will strike the cylinder g, and dropping or being forced therefrom, will. strikertlie outer surface of the. cone and be thrown from the lantern through the space t', while the disposition of the vparts is such that rise of the smoke, heated air, 85e., and escape thereoi'rtln'ough the holes, are in effect unobstructed. p I It. denotes the vertical bars of the lantern-frame and door, and A p -l, the horizontal bars of the saine, .each set of four bars kl forming the frame for one 'ot' the glass panes. Instead of making each frame with a lip or rebate for v lreceiving the glass and puttying the glass into the ii'aine, l provide each frame with a removable retain 'ing strip m, having lateral flanges n, between each oi' whichand the adjacent bar oi the frame a groove, o, is formed for receiving the edge ofthe glass, a stationary retaining strip, p, beingat the bottom oi' each part ofthe ti'ame, and, if desirable, at the top also,
` and also at snclivertical cornersasfare notprovided with .the renovable strips. VEach removable strip is fastened in and by taking out the screw and, withdrawing the opposite end of the strip from a socket, "r, or other confining device, the strip may be removed and the old glass may be taken out or a new glass slipped in.
lt will thus be seen. that no putty or other cement is necessary, and that glass may be inserted or removed without taking a lantern from its post or holder, and by an unskilled person as well as by a glazier.`
Instead of `makimg single removable 'strips there .may be a removable ii'aine, s,v as seen at A, hinged or l position bywa/l thumb-screw, q, or other suitable fastening device,
