Specifically describing the present e1nbodiinent of the invention; the nuljnerals 1 designate a pair ot spaced standards which constitute the supporting traine upon which the grinding and sharpening mechanism is mounted. The lower ends of the standardsA 1 are provided with the feet which may be secured to any suitable base, while theuupper ends of the .standards are connected bv 'in a cross bar 3. n upper set of rolls t and 5; and also a lower set of rolls G and T are mounted between the standards 1, the rolls of each set having a'spaced and parallel relation and revolving in opposite directions. Each of the rolls is formed with trunuious 8, the various trunnions passing loosely through bearing sleeves 9 in the standards 1 and the length oithe rolls being slightly less than the distance between the standards so that the rolls can have a longitudinal as well as a rotary movement. This longltudinal movement is in rnany cases very important; since it prevents 'nicks or the like in the blades from wearing annular ridges in the rolls 'so as to decrease the e'l'liciency thereof. As above mentioned this longitudinal movement of the rolls also has the ad k preventing any niclfs in the blades from wearing grooves or ridges upon the rolls and decreasing the eiiicicncy thereof.
A rocking blade carrier i0 is prginidcd for each pair oi the rolls, the said blade carriers being shown in the present instance as provided at opj'iosite ends thereof with pendent ears Llil which are loosely mounted upon transverse rods or shafts i2 connecting the standards. A blade carrying plate 43 is detachably mounted upon each. of the rocking carriers 40, the said plates being shown as provided at opposite ends thereof with slots aL-i receiving screws 45 which project from the carriers and are engaged by clamping nuts 46. These blade carrying plates are each provided at suitable intervals with upwardly projecting lugs or ears 47 which are arranged in pairs and are provided with rearwardly opening bearing notches 48. Each pair of the lugs 47 is designed to receive a blade hold er 49, the

It will be observed that the head 56 is formed with a rearwardly projecting axial stem 59 which is loosely received within a correspoiuling socket in the end of the holder 49 and is 'j irovided with` a transverse opening receivine' a pin GO. As. indicated more clearly by 131g. 8, this transverse opening is flared at the opposite ends thereof to admit oi the head having a. slight rotary movement independent oii the blade holder. This enables the blade to readily accommodate itself to the rolls so that the rolls always act upon the blade in a uniform manner.

A blade sharpening machine including asharpening roll mounted to have both a rota-ry and a longitudinal movement,means for retaining a,-A blade'in engagement with the sharpening roll, a drive shaft having an operative connection with the sha1' ening roll, a member provided with a cam groove, a shifting lever pivoted between its ends ...and provided at one end with means for engaging the Vcam groove, and a bar engaging the opposite end ofthe lever andhavlng 'an operative connection with the roll so as to move the roll longitudinally as it is rotated.

A blade sharpening machine including a plurality of sharpening rolls mounted to have both a rotary and a longitudinal movement, means for retaining `a blade, means for shifting said rolls longitudinally back and forth simultaneously, and means for applying said blade alternately to said rolls the change of application of the blade from one roll to the other being synchronized" with the change in direction of longitudinal movement of the rolls,

A blade sharpening machine including a pair of sharpening rolls mounted to have both a rotary and a longitudinal movement, a rocking blade carrier, a blade holder upon the blade carrier, the blade being brought alternately into engagement with the tvvo rolls as the carrier is rocked, means for driving the rolls, a pair of disks provided -with cam grooves, means for driving the dis rs, a shifting lever pivoted between its ends and engaging the groove of one of the disks, an operative connection between the said lever and the rolls for moving the rolls longitudinally, a second lever provided lvith means for engaging the groove of the `oosite disk, and an operative connectior` b y'een thesecond lever and the blade ca rier for rocking the same.
