BAZOBf-STROPPING DEVICE. i
` S'peoication of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 27, 1914.
Application led February 16', 1914. Serial No. 818,919.
T0 all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN PAczIeAR, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Razor-Stropping Devices, of which the following is a s ecification.
This invention re ates to certain new and useful improvements in razor stropping devices.
According to my invention I provide a portable razor stropping device that may e attached to any suitable support, the stropping members being preferably leather covered rollers that may be adjusted with respect to the razor blade.
With the above and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings by like characters denoting corresponding parts throughout the several views and 1n which Figure 1 isa side elevational view of the device. Fig. 2 is an end elevational view illustrating the mechanism for operating the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan View. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same illustrating the adjustable bracket for supporting the razor blade, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the arm for supporting the operating gears and illustrating the adjustment of the upper stropping roller.
Referring more specifically to the drawings accompanying this application, the reference numeral 10 designates a table top or other suitable support to which the razor stropping device may be easily clamped.
The razor stropping device comprises a' frame consisting of the side members 11 .held in fixed relation by the spacing bars 12. one of the bars 12 being preferably located midway of the ends of the side members 11, while the other bar 12 is disposed at the upper ends thereof. Oii'sets or arms 13 and 14 are carried by the inner faces of the .side members 11 and are to be mounted on the sup ort 10 and retained in such position b v the fastening screw 15 carried by the arm 14 and engaging the support. The side members 11 are provided with offset U- shaped arms 16 as clearly shown in Figs. l and 5, the arms 16 constituting bearings for the operating mechanism to be hereinafter described. The upper ends of the side .members 11 are provided with slotted openings or cut out portions 17 for purposes to be hereinafter described.. Therazor stroppmg .devices comprise rollers 18 having a coverlng 19 of leather or other suitable honlng material, the rollers being disposed in the side members 11 in vertical alinement.
Means are provided for revolving the rollers 18 and consists of a driving gear 20 mounted and a shaft 21 revolubly supported in a bearing in one of the frame members l1, andprovided with a crank-handle 22. This driving gear 20 meshes with a gear 23 secured coneentrically upon the adjacent end of the lower roller 18 to revolve the latter. The upper roller 18 is revolved through a train of gearing consisting of gears 24 and 26, a pinion 25 interposed between the gears 24 and 26, and a gear 27, all
of said intermeshing gears 24, 25, 26 and 27 being mounted upon axial pinsr projecting from the outer side of the contiguous arm 16, and said gear 27 being concentrically securedl to the upper roller 18.
The upper roller 18 is adjustable with respect to the lower roller by having mount-- zontal arms 34 and vertical arms 35. The A vertical arms 35 are provided with gripping lugs 36 that receive the rear edge of the razor while the cutting edge thereof is disposed in position to project between the rollers 18. The horizontal arms 34 are slotted as at 37 and passing through the said slots 37 are clamping screws 38 which enter the side members 11. for holding the brackets 33 in fixed relation with respect to the side members. y
After the device has been fixed in position upon the table or other support 10 by the fastening screw 15, the razor blade 32 may be inserted between the lugs 36 carried by the vertical arms 35 of the brackets 33. The cutting edge of the blade 32 may be positioned with respect to the stropping rollers 18 by the slotted connection 37 and 38 of the horizontal arm 34 of the bracket.l By operating the gear 20 through the medium of the handle 22,'the gearing as above described will cause the upper and lower rollers 18 to revolve in opposite directions as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2. The position of the upper roller 18 may be regulated by the adjusting screw as clearly shown in Fig. 5 to vary the bearing tension a of said roller upon the blade.
lVhile ll have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, l do not wish to conine myself to the speciic details of construction shown, as various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent of the United States is l. ln a razor-stropping device, a pair of parallel frame members, each provided near its upper end with a vertical slot, and be low said slot with a U-shaped off-set to provide two pairs of parallel arms, in combination with a pair of stropping rollers, the lower one of which is supported in bearings formed in the lower pair of said parallel set forming two pairs of parallel arms,
in combination with stropping rollers mounted between the frame members, land blade-supporting brackets provided with gripping jaws for supporting the cuttingA edge oit' the blade in position to project between said rollers, and means for revolving said rollers in opposite directions comprising a driving gear mounted upon a revoluble shaft mounted in bearings between said frame members, a train of gear wheels mounted upon one of said pairs of arms, a gear wheel Xed to the upper one of said rollers, and in gear with said train, and a gear wheel fixed to the lower roller and meshing with said driving gear.
ln testimony whereof l afiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
