To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMON A. OLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orofino, in the county of Clearwater, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tool handles and has special reference to a saw handle of the detachable type provided with means for heating the handle so that when using it out of doors in the winter time the hands of the operator will be kept comfortably warm.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tool handle with an interiorly contained heating element and with means carried by the handle to heat said element.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool handle of this description with means to support an acetylene generator arranged to heat the interior of the handle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combina tion of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool handle constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the same as applied to a cross cut saw. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through the entire handle taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail section through the upper end of the handle. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the bottom support for the carbid holder.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is aframe provided which has at its forward or saw engaging ends an upstanding member 10 having at its forward edge a slot 11 wherein is received one end of the blade 12. This saw is provided with the usual pin receiving openings 13 and through one of these openings 13 is passed a pin 14, the pin 14 likewise passing through the forked end 15 of a draw bolt which extends through a suitable opening 16 formed in the member 10. On the rear side of the member 10 a washer 17 surrounds the shank 18 of the draw bolt and on this shank, which is threaded, is provided a thumb nut 19 so that the shank may be pulled firmly into position thus forcing the saw into the slot 11. Extending rearwardly from the bottom of the member 10 is a bottom frame member 19 which is continued at its rear end in the upwardly extending portion 20, the portion at the bottom of this part being relatively thin as at 21 to provide a certain amount of spring. In the upper surface of the member 19 is formed a socket 22. This socket 22 is designed to receive the lower end or foot of a lug 23 which is formed as an extension of the lower part of a hollow handle 24. Surrounding this hollow handle 24 is a strap 25 which has its ends formed as a slit bolt 26 and extending through an opening 27 formed through the upper end of the member 10. Surrounding the slit bolt 26 is a frusto-conical washer 28 so that when the strap 25 is pulled through this washer the sides thereof will be tightened. On the front side of the member 10 is provide a washer 29 on which works a thumb nut 30 carried on the shank 26 of said strap bolt. By means of this the handle 24 is forced securely into place and held rigidly in connection with the member 10 and consequently with the saw. Moreover there is provided at the rear of the strap bolt or what may be termed the bight thereof, an elongated opening 31 wherein is adapted to lit the head 32 of an extension 33 extending forward of the part 20. Thus the frame is securely locked in position.
At 34 is a platform which is provided around its periphery with a plurality of upwardly extending lugs 35 spaced equally from the center of the platform and extending downward from points beneath the center of said platform are certain arms 36 which are arranged to embrace the sides of the member 19 so that by means of a set screw 37 the platform can be locked in position on said member 19. On this platform is supported a carbid container 38 which is of the ordinary form and which is provided around its upper edge with a threaded periphery 39 so that a suitable threaded cap 40 may be screwed thereon. This cap 40 is arranged to grasp the usual packing ring 41 between its lower edge and a shoulder formed on the container 38 so that the escape of gas is prevented. Beneath the cap 40 is arranged a felt pad 42 which acts as a strainer and which is held in position by means of a suitable perforated disk 43. Extending upward from the cap 40 are certain lugs 44 which serve to support a water reservoir 45 having an inlet opening at its upper end normally closed by a cap 46, the purpose of the opening being to fill the reservoir with water. Moreover this reservolr has at its upper part an air vent 47 which is closed or not as desired by means of a suitable swinging closure 48, the purpose of said closure being to permit closing of the opening when the saw is laid down upon its side so that water is prevented from escaping. Extending from the bottom of the reservoir 45 into said carbid holder is a water supply pipe 49 which is provided with the usual stop cook or valve 50 which is to regulate the supply of water to said container. Extending upward from the container through one of the lugs 44, which is made hollow for the purpose, is a gas pipe 51 the lower end of which communicates with the interior of the cap above the felt so that any gas passing up therethrough is strained through said felt. The upper end of this pipe 51 passes through a suitable opening 52 formed in the bottom of the handle 24 and the pipe is provided with the usual stop cook or valve 53. The upper end of this pipe is moreover provided with a burner nozzle 54 which is visible through a sight and lighting opening 55 formed in the side of the handle.
Solder-ed or otherwise firmly secured to the upper side of the water container or reservoir is a parallel spring 56 the upper end of which is arranged to seat in a spring seat 57 formed on the under side of the handle so that when the handle is in position the reservoir and carbid container are held firmly in proper place so that the saw may be operated without shaking the parts unduly.
The upper end of the handle 24 is provided with a loose and threaded end 58 the edge of which has a pair of diametrically disposed notches 59 wherein is received the pin 60 which passes through a rod 61 of iron or other suitable heating material, said rod terminating in a point just above the '64 which is so arranged that when the cap is in position the under side of said cap bears against the upper side of the bar 61 thereby holding the cross bar 60 in place in the slots. This cap has provided therein a pair of air passages 65 which are arranged to register with similar air passages 66 formed in a cover plate 67 secured to the cap by means of a pivot pin 68, the cover plate being rotatable on the cap so as to bring the ports 65 and 66 into or out of registry at will.
In the operation of the device carbid having been placed in the carbid holder and water in the reservoir, the valve 50 is opened until some of the water runs down into the carbid. Gas will thereby be formed and pass up through the pipe 51 to the burner 54, the valve 53 of course being open. The gas escaping from the opening 54 may be lighted by means of a match or the like inserted through the opening 55 so that a flame passes up through the interior of the handle and heats the rod 61, the member 67 being rotated to open the ports at the top of the handle. When the rod has been heated sufficiently the water may first be turned off and then the gas and this will keep the handle warm for some time.
It is also to be noted that whenever it is desired to use the device without the carbid holder and water reservoir, it is merely necessary to loosen the nut 30 when the handle may be raised. Then the holder and reservoir will be free to be lifted up out of the plate projections or lugs 35 and removed. The plate may then be removed by lifting the thumb screw 37. The handle may then be replaced and the device used without the heater, this being the arrangement for warm weather. There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and of the character specified.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it. is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A saw handle comprising a vertically eX- tended forward portion provided with means to secure a saw, a rearwardly extending portion connected to the bottom of the vertical portion, a rear vertical portion connected to the rear of the rearwardly extending portion, a forwardly extending portion at the upper end of the rear vertical portion, a handle clamp connecting the last mentioned with the first mentioned portion, and a handle adapted to be secured in said clamp.
2. In a device of the kind described, a substantially rectangular frame, the upper member of said frame including a handle clamp and the lower member of said frame being provided with a socket to receive a foot on a handle, a handle including a Ver tically extending tube mounted in said clamp and a foot engaged in said socket, an acetylene generator secured between said handle and the bottom member of the frame, a gas pipe leading from the generator up into the handle, a cylindrical rod extending upward through the handle in alinement with the gas pipe and forming a heating element, and an air regulator secured at the top of the handle and arranged to hold said rod in position.
3. In a device of the kind described, a
frame, a handle arranged in said frame, means for locking said handle to the frame, a heating element in said handle, a gas generator supported in said frame, a burner located beneath said heating element and communicating with the generator, and means between said handle and generator whereby the latter is secured in position when said handle is locked to the frame.
