EDWARD A. SMETZER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
LAMP LIGHTER AND EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915..
Application filed April 23, 1914. Serial No. 833,957.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SMETZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Lighters and Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lamp lighters and extinguishers, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a device to be connected to a lamp for lighting the Wick and for extinguishing the same when desired. said lighter being operated by a finger lever at one side of the device and the extinguisher being operated by another lever of similar character at the opposite side of the device.
Another obiect of the invention is to provide a lamp lighter of simple construction which will not require the use pt matches, which will be safe and reliable in use, and which will be inexpensive to manufacture and which will be alwavs readv 0n the lamp.
These and other ohiects may be attained bv means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp lighter and extinguishe made in accordance with th s invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated bv the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, and made on a larger scale.
Referring to the drawing. the numeral 1 designates the base portion of the lamp lighter and 2 is the base portion of the extinguisher. The base ort on 1 is pro ided with a curved member 3. which is pivoted at 4 to the cur ed member 5 formed on the base 2 of the ext nguisher, and said base port on being rovided with a curved clamp member 6 which engages the similar member 7 fo med on the base 1 hen connected by the ad usting screw 8. lhe clamp members 6 and 7 engage the neck of a lam of anv suitable structure and the numeral 9 designates the wick of the lamp, said lamp not being sh wn.
livoted at 10 to lugs 11 rising from the base 1 is a lever 12, said lever having an enlarged finger piece 18. The opposite end of the lever is pivotally connected at 14 to a vertical bar 15, and said bar carries at its upper end a pivoted link 16 having a spring pawl 17 at its outer end, while its inner end is pivoted at 18 to the horizontal arm 19 of a bracket 20 supported upon the base 1. The pawl 17 engages the teeth of a gear wheel 21 journaled in the arm 19, and said gear wheel meshing with a pinion 22 mounted on a shaft 23 at the side of the roughened steel wheel 24. Supported upon the base 1 is a tube 25 in which is placed a stick of sparking com osition to be pushed up against the roughened wheel 24 bv means or" a spring 27. said s arking com osition 26 resting on the to of the spring 27 and a set screw 28 extending through the base 1 and having an enlarged head 29 u on which the spring 27 rests..as shown in Fig. 4-.
The gasolene or alcohol tube 30 for the lighter is provided with a curved upper end 31 through wh ch the wick extends. For ext n uishing the wick of the lighter. a lever 33 is pivoted at 34 to the bracket 20, one end or" said extinguisher being connected to a s ring while the o posite end of said s ng is connected to the link 16. A- stop 36 Fo the end of the ex nguisher is connected to the bar 15. The front end 37 of the extinguisher is curved to no mallv co er the u per end o the wick 32 ot' the lighter.
The lamp ext nguisher comprises a le er 38 pivoted at 39 to a bracket 40 extend ng from the b se 2. said lever being pro ded with an extinguishing member 41. which is normallv held awav from the wick 9 by me ns of av s ring 42 connected at one end to the le er 38 and at the op osite end to a bracket 43 fo med on the base 2. Pivoted to the b acket 43 is a lever 44. the inner end of which engag s an inclined extens on 45 on the lever 38 for operating the extipo'uisher.
T e o erat on of the inven on mav be brie lv desc bed as follows: To light the wick 9. the le er 12 is o erated bv press ng down u on the fin er rest 13. thus o erating the wick ext nguisher 33 to unco er the wick 32 and rotating the gear wheel 21 and the pin on 22 to rotate the ro hened wheel 24 aga nst the igniter 26 to light the wick 82 and proiect the s ark onto the wick 9 to l ght the lamp. When the finger is removed from the rest 13, the parts assume the position shown in Fig. I to extinguish the wick 32 and to leave the wick 9 lighted. When it is desired to extinguish the wick 9 the lever 44 is operated.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a. lamp lighter and extinguisher made in accordance With this invention may be manufactured at low cost, is simple in construction, is reliable in operation and can be readily connectedtoany form of a lamp.
Various changes may be made in the details of constructioniwithout departing from the spirit and: scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is. claimed is:-
A lamp lighter comprising: a base, means for securing said base to the neck of a lamp in position to light the Wick of the lamp, a lever pivoted to the base, a bracket connected? to the: base, agear wheel pivoted to said bracket, a pawl carried by said lever, a pinion in mesh with said gear Wheel, a roughened Wheel movable with said pinion, a wick tuheehaving a curved upper end, a wick in said tube, an extinguisher for said wick, said'extinguisher having a curved end which normally covers the outer end of the wick, said extinguisher being pivoted to the bracket, a spring for normally holding the said extinguisher in operative position and means whereby the extinguisher is thrown away from the wick when the lighter is operated.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD A. SMETZER.
