COOLING MEANS FOR. INTERNALCOMBUSTION ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Application filed June 23; 1914. Serial No. 846,7 25
'1 '0 all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, VICTOR ULMER, subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Rosheim, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling Means for Internal-C0m bustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to internal combustion engines and more particularly to means for cooling the working pistons of such en- As a rule, the cooling medium.- water, oil, or the likeis conveyed to the piston through socalled telescopic tubes, which participate in the reciprocating movement of the piston. However, unless the axis of the piston and of the telescopic tube are exactly parallel, a leakage will soon occur permitting the cooling-medium to escape around the telescopic tube, where the latter passes through the stuffing box. This is caused by the lateral pressures in theguides of the telescopic tube, whereby the packing of'the stufling box becomes gradually loosened; and it finally is so damaged, that it not only allows the cooling medium to escape, but may result in a serious breakdown of the entire engine.
.To avoid these defects, is the object of my present invention, according to which I interpose between the telescopic tube proper .and the supply-pipe attached to the piston an elastic member, to compensate for irregularities in the reciprocating movements of the piston and the telescopic tube.
In the accompanying drawing I have i1lustrated one form of construction showing how my invention can be applied to the piston of a single-acting internal combustion engine, the drawing being a central longitudinal section through the cylinder and piston and one of the telescopic tubes.
a is the piston adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder 0 and provided at its inner end with a closed part6, which is cooled by a continuous flow of a cooling medium, e. 9..
oil, which enters part. b at d and .leavesit at e. Forthe purpose of conveying the oil to and conducting it away from b, the walls of the piston a are castwith ducts f which, in turn, communicate with pipes g attached,
to the outer or forward end of the piston.
To the the-walls of the cylinder 0 on. opposite sides thereof, are secured brackets 7a,.
Unc of these brackets is intended as a guide for the oil-supply-pipe and the other for the oil discharge pipe, the former being shown in the drawing in section. Both being of like construction,'the description of one will sufi'ice. i
Z is the telescopic tube proper, which reciprocates as the piston a reciprocates and is guided in the bracket h, a stuffing-box n being provided to prevent leakage. Any oil escaping around tube Z between this tube and the inner wall of the bracket h is discharged at on. To the bracket is secured a cylindrical cover 2', surrounding the tube Z and provided with an inlet ,opening is through which the oil enters filling the space inside the cover 6.
- Instead of connecting the telescopic tube Z directly with pipe 9, I interpose a tube 0, which, with its one end, is secured to the inner end of the telescopic tube Z so that the oil instead of flowing through the latter, passes through tube 0. This tube, on account of its being secured to the inner end of tube Z only with its free end, is thereby made more or less elastic, which elasticity, of course, will compensate tor any small irregularities in the movements of the reciprocating piston a and the pipe 9 attached thereto, on the one hand, and of the likewise reciprocating telescopic tube Z, on
My new construction can, of course be used, with any cooling medium and can be equally well applied to vertical and hen. zontal engines.
I claim as my invention:
1. In internal combustion engines the com bination with the cylinder and the reciproeating piston provided with passages for the circulation of a cooling medium, of a telescopic tube ada ted to reciprocate together with the saidrpiston and to supply the cooling medium'thereto, a communicating connection between-said telescopic tube and one of the passages in said piston and an elastic member in said connection, and means for guiding said telescopic tube.
2. In internal combustion engines the combination with the cylinder and the reciprocating iston provided with passages for the circu ation of a cooling medium, of a telescopic tube adapted to reciprocate together with the said piston and to supply the cooling medium thereto, a communicating connection between said telescopic tube the piston, a communicating connection between each tube and a passage in said piston to conduct the cooling medium to and away from the piston respectively, and an elastic tubein each telescopic tube secured with its free end to the inner end of the telescopic tube and forming part of the connection between said telescopic tube and the piston.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
