To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLAF PAULSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Benson, in the county of Swift and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross Head Oiling Devices; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a cross head oiling device; and, to this end, it c nsists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cross head and a guide therefor having applied thereto in a. working position the improved oiling device,
some parts being broken away and some of the exposed parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in transverse ertical section, taken on the line m of Fig. 1, with some parts removed; and Fig. 3 is a detail View, in section, taken on the irregular line m m of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
The numeral 1 indicates a pair of vertically spaced parallel cross head guides connected at their ends by straps or end brackets 52, and the numeral 3 indicates a cross head. mounted for horizontal sliding movement between said guides. Pivotally connected to the wrist pin l of the cross head 3, is a connecting rod 5 and rigidly secured to said cross head is a piston rod 6 which works through a bearing 7 on one of the brackets 2, The above described parts have been illustrated simply for showing the improved oiling device applied in working position, and may be of the standard or any desired construction.
Referring now to the improved oiling device in detail. the numeral 8 indicates an oil. supply cup which also may be of any desired construction. The oil cup 8 is secured to a bracket 9, having a depending stem 10 and a horizontally extended oil delivery pipe or conduit 11. The stem 10 is slidably and rotatably mounted in a standard 12, secured to the upper guide 1. A. set screw 13 has screw-threaded engagement with said stand- Specification of Letters Patent.

ard and is arranged to impinge against the stem 10 for holding the oil cup 8 in different vertical adjustments. This connection also permits the stem 10 to be turned in the bracket to bring the oil conduit 11 into proper alineinent with the rest of the device.
Swiveled to the outer end portion of the oil conduit or pipe 11, is a head 1- which works between a pair of collars 15 on said pipe 11. To the head 1-1 is rigidly secured a depending oil pipe or conduit 16, free to swing with the head 14 in the direction of movement of the cross head 3. From the pipe 11 the oil passes through a port 17, formed in said pipe, into the oil delivery conduit or pipe 16.
Carried by the cross head 3, is an open drip cup 18, connected to the wrist vpin 1 by a nipple 19, which is axially alined with said wrist pin. From the nipple 19 oil is delivered to the bearing between the connecting rod 5 and the wrist pin 4: through a port 20 formed in said wrist pin. Telescopically mounted on the oil pipe 16 is an oil delivery conduit or pipe 21, arranged to receive oil from said pipe 16 and deliver the same into the drip cup 18. The lower end of the oil pipe 21 is swiveled to the drip cup 18 by a hub 22, which extends into said drip cup and is pivotally secured thereto by a pair of axially alined set screws 93.
The oil pipes 16 and 21 afford alongi tudinallv extensible and contra ctible connection between the oil cup 8 and drip cup 18 and adapts itself to the varying positions of the drip cup 18 with respect to the oil cup 8 during the travel of the cross head 3. lit is important to note that the drip cup 18 is open to the atmosphere on both sides of the hub 22, thus permitting the oil from the drip cup to be fed by gravity to the bearing between the wrist pin and the connecting rod. If the drip cup 18 was not open to the atmosphere. the pump-like action of the oil pipes 16 and 21, with respect to each other, would be liable to draw or suck the oil from the drip cup, depending on the fit between said pipes.

In a cross head oiling device, the combination with a relatively fixed oil supply cup, of a drip cup carried by said cross head at a point below said oil supply cup and arranged to deliver to the wrist pin thereof, said drip cup being open to the atmosphere,
