In the preferred embodiment of the invention, I preferably construct this cushioning-- member 7 hollow to provide an air chamber 8. One of the end walls of this member is provided with a valve 9- through the me- ,5 dium of which said member may be inflated by means of a suitable air pump. In Fig. 4 of the drawings, I have illustrated still another modification, \vherein the hard rubber base plate (3 is '[n'ovided in its outer face with a" plurality of spaced transverse rectangular channels or grooves 16... Upon this base and extending-over said grooves the soft rubber cusl'iioning member 7 is arranged and vulcanized to said base. The primary feature of course resides in-the provision'ojl the air pockets in the use of a solid rubber pad or the provision of the inflatable pneumatic pad.

My improved recoil pad may. be very easily and quickly applied to the end of the gun stock and effectually operates to protect the shoulder of the gunner against all liability of abrasion or in ury incident to the recoil of the gun. The device is extremely simple in its construction.

' \Vl iile I have above described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings the several preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of still further n'iodilicatirnis and I therefore reserve the privilege of re sorting to all such legitimate changes as may he 'lairly-embodied within the spirit and scope ot the invention as claimed.

Having thus descril'ied the invention, what is claimcdis: z

1. A recoil padfor gun stockscomprising a hard rubber base plate adapted .lfor err gageinent with the gun stock, and a. relatively soft rubber padv secured upon said base and provided with a plurality of trans- \ers'ely extel'iding air )oclcels open at both ends to the atmosphere. l

2. A recoil pad for gun stocks including 1 a hard rubber base plate provided at its ends with screw receiving openings, at relatively soft hollow rubber cushion provided with tubular COIlIlCCtlOIlS between its opposite in: ils adjacent to each end thereof, the bores of which open upon one face of the cushion, the wall of the (JUiFlilOll at the other ends of said tub *s being provided with screw receiving openings adapted to registerwith same, the Wall of the pad 'which is opposed to the base plate being provided between the tubes with a plurality of transvesely extending air pockets, said pockets beingopen at their opposite ends to the atmosphere.
