. Letters Patent No. 112,304, dated-February 28,1871. l`
"The Schedule rel'erredto in these Letters Patent and making `part: of the same.
provements in Fruit-Presses, of which` the-following isa specification. i Y
i Figurevl is a sidejelevation;` ano f l Figure'Z isa horizontalfsection. Y 'lhisinventionrelatefsto'a press inwhich a double 1 lever` suspendednearl `its middle to the lowerends of two vertical rodsrand having hung toit, between said rods, the upperextreniity of the plungerfrod, is ernployed by beingvertically` vibrated,to force the plunger downward into the ,fruit-receiver, each of the said sus- `pending rods serving alternately as a fulcrum and as astop to prevent the plunger from being forced upwardl by the reaction ofthecompressedlmaterial.
p a, are four uprights, placed in two pairs, which are "connectedlby cross-girts I) at the top and bottom, and being ata suitable' distance apart, to allow the press to sit betweerf them", the posts ofeach` pair being also far enough asunderfto'admit of the introducti'ou'be- "tweeuthem of a double lever, c', placedat right angles l to thesills d, to wljielrgtheuprights aresecured. v
Ont'ne lower girt b isjlocated the -concaveicircular bed c, onwhich rests the cylindrical fruit-receiver er .The plungerf is fittedl to` the cylinder, and is pivot`4 cd-to the lowerend of' a vertical-bar, h,"the upper end ot' which is hung ltoa pin that passes through tlree parallel metal plates, l,placed at small intervals apart, ='\vhich'ibrm the central portion of the double lever c', the end piecesofthe-latter'being connected with said plates by bands. p 4 Into each of the'spaces between the plates 't enters one ofthe vertical rods k, to which said plates are joint- "ed, and which, passing upward through orifices inthe upper girt b, servep'to sustain the lever c. g
i The suspending rods" lc are so placed that the pins which 'pivot `,them tothe lever are on opposite sides of As the point ofresistanceis .always the pivot of the plnngerfrod, and `the fulcrum of the lever is always oueor the other ofthe pivots of the suspending rods, it is desirable, in order to obtain the greatest possible leverage, that the suspending pivots should be as ucar lthe plunger-pivot as possible, and itis `for this reason thatthe rods la enter-separate spaces inthe lever c', so that `they may overlapeach other.
l 'To the under sfide of the upper girt Ab is secureda guide, l, through which the rods It pass, each of' said rods being serrated on its outer side with dmvnWard-` cut notches. i v A i In the. guide l are pivoted dogs 4in-the points of which fit the said notches, the outer-ends of the dogs being .a little higher and also a little heavier than the inner ends,so that cwhen' the rods are worked down the dogs dro'p into thenotches and hold allthat is gained byeach motion of the lever c'.
i When it is desired to raise the plungerl the outer ends of the dogs are elevated by depressing levers n pivoted in the extremities of the nppergirt and fitted so tightly in their recesses asY to remain wherever placed. y
On thus disengaging the dogs, the rods easily rise when lifted by the lever. A spring-hook, o, secured to one side ot' the upper girt slips under and holds the level', when suciently elevated, to make room for emptying and filling vthe receiver.
A block, fr, of anysnitable materiahan'd of a length nearlyequal to the distance between the pairs of ypost-s is secured to the lever c', between two of the Aposts on one side ef the frame, which block has convex ends, Athat enable the lever to be`vibrated without binding t the block against the pots, while, at the Sametime, the block preventsl the lever from moving endwise, and thus drawing the` suspending rods out oi the perpendicular. y
This machine enables the attendant to. assume a naturalrand easy position' while operating it, and works `with little friction and great. rapidity.
I clainras my invention- A M 1. The double leverc' c', constructed with central longitudinal apertures, and arranged infconnectiou blockl, 'logs fm,and weighted levers u, all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
