f Letters Patent No'. 112,296, dated February 28, Vum.
iMPRoi/EMENT IN sAw-.iolNTERs FoR ciRcuLAR-sAws.
" j, 1 Thelohedulelrefrred to` in these Letters Patent and making part. of the same.
, Toall whom/t 'may concern.-
, ne it known'ttat I, .ronn- H. STE-vemos, of Bil-,-
l mngham, in-thelcountylof Erie and State of Ohio,
`have invented a'new and' valuable Improvement in Saw-Jointerfor CirculareSawsyand'I do `hereby de- Clare that the followingist a full', 'clear, and 'exact d escription of the' construction and operation of the same, reference. being"had to the-annexed drawing making a part of tbisspeciication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
` Figure 1 of the drawing `is a `representation ,ot' my Saw-jointer, taken froml the side; and.`
Figure2 is edge Viewy of theV same, .part of the main stemorhandle being in longitudinal section;
, The nature ofrmyinveution' consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable t sawjointerwhich can be used on circular-saws of. any
` size, as willbebereinafter fully set forth.
fIn orderto enable otbersskilled'iu the art to which my invention appertainsllto `rnaleand use' the same,
1 willnowgproceed `to describe `its cnstrnctio'n and operation. 1
` A represents the mainlstemor handleof mysaw- `j ointerftbe `lowerend ofwbich is concave, to' fiton he niandreloflthe .sawjonthe inside, that isgthe side` 'next tothe log. p .Y Frornthe outer `end of the stemv A is inserted a 1 screw-rod, c, which runs longitudinally through the l stem, and passes througha nut, b, `insertedin a mortise' made at `about "the cntenof `the stem.V
-fByturning-tbe nut b it,tvil1reaclily, belseen that '3 l the screw-rodal `can -be `made/to extend beyond the stem, or be drawn into 4the stein. Y
Theouterendyof the screw-roda is bent at right angles, as shownin'igm2,` and projects through a slot 1 cut in the sidelot'` the'steni A., On this end of the rod c ispivoted 4the segmental blade B, of the peculiar forinatio'shown in g. 1.
\ This haceis nelatrmiybymeans of@ bolt, a, (and n1'1t,)which passes through a curved slotgin the .cen-
ter ofthe blade, fmdfattaclles to the Aouter end of a brace, C. t .t f
The brace C passes d 'wnyvard along opposite side ortheA, towhich it is securedfbymeans of two screws, e c, passing through a longitudinal slot in-the brace into the stem.
` By this means tbe blade B can not only be moved `up and down, but may also be turned on its pivot and.
be `firmly held in anyposition desired.
Upon the outer pointofthe blade B is-a projecting lip, I L, which, when thejointerjsplaced in position on the saw, comes against the pointsof. the tooth.
The tooth is then filed down to the top of said lip,
Aand also to the convex edgeof tbe blade' back of the lip, which will give uniform vscroll to the top of' every toothfrom point to base.. By turning the plateB- on its pivot, the scroll may be changed to suit saws of dierent sizes.
There is also a slotted bar, D, attached tothe plate vB, by means of a bolt 'passing through a slot in 'the plate, which bar can be' adjusted iu any desired'A-position toprot-eet the adjoining tooth from the tile.
This gauge may be applied in a perpendicular position, or in any manner 'suitable to the operator.
` Havingthus fully described my invention,
\V ba`t I claim as neugand desire to'secnre by'Let-V ters Patent, is-
l.y The segmental' blade B, provided with a lip, h, and'cap'able of twofold adjustment, one u-pon its pivot, and the other out and in from the main stem, substantially as' and for the .purposes herein set forth.
2. The arrangement' within the main stem A of the bent screw-rod a and nut b, for the 4purpose of adjusting the blade B, substantially asherein set forth.
,Y .3.111 combination with the stein A and bladeB,
the slotted braceC, constructed and arranged sub stautia-lly as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combinationof the stem A, screw-rod a., nut b,blade B, lip 7L, brace G, and bar D, all constructed `and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth:
In testimony that Iclaim the above I have berei unto subscribed my name in, the presence oi' two witnesses. l 'l lJOHN H. STEVENSON. Witnesses: l Y l 0. F. FULLER, V JAMES HALL.
