To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, J on HAvAssY, sub ect of the King of Hungary, residing at Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arlzona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Clippers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hair clipping devices and has for its object to provide an extremely simple and lnexpensive device of this character yet one which will be highly eflicient in operation and which will readily perform the duties for which it is designed.
To the above end, the invention aims to provide a new and novel base plate for supporting a cutter plate and the driving mechanisms therefor, novel means whereby said cutter plate may be adjusted toward or away from the base plate, simple and efficient means for reciprocating the cutter plate, and a thumb controlled stop for checking reciprocation of said plate.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the construction herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hair clipper constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4c is a horizontal section; Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the casing and illustrating the base plate and the parts within said casing in elevation; Fig. 6 is aperspective view of the base plate and the parts formed integrally therewith; Fig. 7 is detail perspective view showing more particularly the arrangement of the stop in connection with a vibrating shaft to be described; and Fig. 8 is a detail section through the drive shaft showing more particularly the arrangement of a ratchet wheel, driving gear and pawl forming ,a connection between the gear and ratchet.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my invention as including a base plate 1 whose forward edge is formed with a number of forwardly projecting teeth 2 while a handle 3 extends rearwardly from its rear edge and is formed integrally there- Specification of Letters Patent.

right posts 5 which rise therefrom and rigidly support a cover plate 6 of a casing, the upright wall 7 of which is shaped to fit the formation of the flanges 4 and the rear edge of said plate 1. It will be noted that the forward edges 7 of the wall 7 terminate at the junctureof the forward edges of the flanges a with the plate 1 and that the cover plate 6 terminates at a point directly above said edges 7. Rising from the forward portion of the plate 1 and arranged in transversely spaced relation is a pair of upright guide posts 8 whose upper ends are preferably reduced, said reduced ends being threaded as at 9 for a purpose to appear.
As most clearly seen in Fig. 4, the guide posts 8 are loosely received by transverse slots 10 which are formed in a rectangular cutter plate 11, said plate overlying the base plate 1 and having its forward edge formed with a. number of teeth 12 which coact with the teeth 2. The rear edge of the plate 11 is provided with a notch 13 in which a head 14: is loosely engaged, said head being carried bythe forward end of an angular operating arm 15 which projects forwardly from an upright lock or vibrating shaft 16 which is operated in a manner to be hereinafter described.
As most clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 5, a guard plate 17 is hingedly connected to the forwardedge of the cover plate 6, said' of the plate 17, may be brought into more or less forcible contact with the upper surface of the plate 11, thereby increasing or diminishing the friction existing between said plate 11 and the base plate 1, for the purpose of controlling the speed with which said plate 11 is allowed to reciprocate. For
the purpose of vibrating the shaft 16, the same is preferably provided with an escapement 21 which is operated by an escapement wheel 22, the latter being driven by a main drive gear 23 and a pinion 2%, said gears belng mounted respectively on upright shafts 25 and 26. As is common with devices of this character, the shaft 25 isprovided with a ratchet 27 which is rigidly mounted thereon while the gear 23 is loosely mounted on said shaft, a spring pressed pawl 28 being provided for locking the two members together. In the present embodiment, the shaft 25 extends above the cover plate 6 and is provided with a suitable key 29 by means of which a spring 30 having one of its ends secured to said shaft and its other end-to one of the posts 5, may be wound, the tension of said spring being then exerted to operate the escape ment mechanism which, through the instrumentality of the arm15 and the head 14, will now' reciprocate the cutter plate 11 portion 32 of said arm 31, thereby preventing the shaft 24: from vibrating when the finger 33 is in contact with said upturned end 32 of the arm 31,, a coil spring 35 being provided for the purpose of normally holding said finger 33 in its operative position, said spring being here shown as attached to a rearwardly extending operating arm .36. and to the rear wall of the casing. As
clearly seen in the various figures of the drawings, the arm 36 extends through a slot 36 in said rear wall of the casing and is provided with a. thumb button 37 by means of which it may be operated to move the finger 33 out of contact with the rear end 32 of the arm 31, thereby allowing the tension of the spring 30 to be exerted to reciprocate the cutter plate as hereinbefore suggested. 7
. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw-.-
ings, it will be seen that I have provided an extremelysimple device, for carrying out the objects of the invention yet one which will be highly eificient in operation and which possesses numerous advantageous features. .i Emphasls 1s la1d upon the speclfic means .-.whe reby\ the -movement of the vibrating shaft 16 may be controlled, upon the provisionofthe pairof posts .8 which act not only ,to guide thercutter plate 11 but act as means for clamping-'theportion 20 of the plate 17 in frictional contact with said cutter plate and upon the specific construction of the base plate and parts formed integrally therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base plate having teeth on its forward edge, a pair of upright guide posts rising from said base plate and disposed in transversely spaced relation, said posts having their upper ends threaded, a cutter plate having transverse slots loosely receiving said posts, said cutter plate having teeth coacting with those on the base plate, a casing on said base and terminating in rear of the posts, a guard plate hingedly connected to the front edge of the casing and'having openings receiving the threaded upper ends of the posts, the forward portion of said plate being bent downwardly and contacting with said cutter plate, thumb nuts on said threaded ends of the posts and contacting with said guard plate, and means in the casing for reciprocating the cutter plate.
- 24A device of the character described comprising a base plate having teeth formed on its forward edge,'a cutter plate having teeth coacting with the teeth on said base plate, a vibrating shaft in rear of the cutter plate, means for vibrating said shaft, an arm secured to said shaft and having a connection with said cutter platev whereby the same may be vibrated, a stop on said vibrating shaft and a manually controlled stop yieldingly contacting therewith, whereby vibration of said shaft is normally prevented.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base plate having teeth on its forward edge, a cutter plate having teeth coacting with those on the base plate, an upright vibrating shaft, means for vibrating said shaft, an arm projecting from said vibrating shaft and having a loose connection with the cutter plate, whereby the same may be reciprocated, a rearwardly projecting arm on said vibrating shaft, said arm having its free end turned transversely to provide a stop, and a manually controlled stop yieldingly contacting with said trans-' versely turned end of said arm, whereby said vibrating shaft is normally held against movement.
