To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. GRAYBILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, county of York, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shade holders and more particularly to a means for attaching a shade holder or globe support to a lamp socket.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple and eflicient means for supporting the shade holder directly from a the rib or bead ordinarily formed adjacent the lower outer edge of a socket shell.
Another object is to eliminate the extra locking devices or parts which are included in many shade holders at present on the market.
Other objects and the novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view, in elevation, of a shade holder embodying my invention supported from an ordinary key socket having a modified rib or bead according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view looking in direction of the arrows, on line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the shade holder in plan view and the modified rib in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lower end of the lamp socket showing the modified rib thereon, the shade holder supported thereby being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the outer metallic shell and 11 the metal cap of a key or keyless lamp socket. In the ordinary lamp socket the shell has a continuous circumferential bead or rib formed thereon adjacent its lower edge.
In the present invention the rib or bead designated as 12 is modified or mutilated by an oblique transverse groove as at 13, making the rib discontinuous, the section between being flush with the shell 10 which may be done by pressing the rib inwardly along a diagonal to the rib at any desired angle. The adjacent ends 14 and 15 of the rib 12 are thereby spaced apart a distance equal to the vertical height of the rib 12, and are also vertically in line.
The rib 12 tapers to the ends 14: and 15, both horizontally and vertically. The rib thus provides a screw thread on the socket shell, the whole thread being in the horizontal position or plane originally occupied by the ordinary circumferential bead on a socket shell. The same may be made with entering inclines of any desired pitch preferably as steep as possible to prevent the shade holder 16 from working or rattling off.
The shade holder or globe support 16 is formed of a single sheet of suitable metal and has a peripheral flange 17 depending from its lower edge and lugs 18 are provided thereon which have screw threaded openings to receive the usual set screws 19. The globe or shade attaching means forms no part of this invention and the showing in this respect is merely illustrative as any suitable attaching means may be substituted for the means shown.
The horizontal or top portion 20 of the shade or globe support extends inwardly from the upper edge of the rim or flange 1 7 and has a plurality of vent holes 21 therein.
At the inner edge of the horizontal or top portion 20 there is an upstanding flange 22 which is provided with an internal groove 23 near its upper edge to receive the rib 12 on the socket shell.
There is a radially extending slit 21 which forms an opening through one side of the flange 22 and extends intothe top portion 20, which allows the top of the holder on the right side of the slit 2 1 to be bent downwardly slightly, or the part on the left side to be bent upwardly when the holder is run on the thread or mutilated rib.
The outer edge of the flange 22 is of substantially the same diameter as the shell of the socket so that the said flange can not be slipped or sprung directly or transversely over the rib 12 nor can it accidentally slip or pass over the said rib due to the jars or strains which an ordinary globe holder is subject to.
To attach the shade holder to the socket, the holder is tilted slightly to engage the part of the flange 22 indicated by numeral 25 in Fig. 1 over the end 15 of the mutilated rib 12. On account of the slit 24:, the part opposite 25 indicated by numeral 26 will be permitted to bend out of line with part 25 and when once started the thread will run into groove 23 as readily as the ordinary nut runs on a bolt.
In order to remove the globe support the same is rotated in a left-handed direction until the slit 24. about registers with the section 13 at ends 14: and 15 of the thread. The part 26 is drawn down slightly to engage the lower inclined edge of end 14, whereby it Will be forced down and the completion of the revolution will release the globe support.
On opposite sides of the slit 24: and adjacent the upstanding flange 22, lugs 27 and 28 are punched up vertically from the top of the shade holder.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. Means for attaching a shade holder to its support comprising an internally grooved member connected to the shade holder, a mutilated rib on the support, and means to permit running the said groove onto the rib.
2. The combination with a shade holder formed with a central upwardly extending flange having an internal groove, of a sup porting member having a mutilated rib thereon. said flange being split at one side to allow the contiguous ends to bend out of line with each other when the grooved flange is 3. The combination with a cylindrical support, of a rib extending circumferentially about the support adjacent the lower edge thereof, a shade or globe holder provided with a flange having an internal groove,
adapted to receive the rib, part of the flange being of substantially the same diameter as the support so that said flange may not pass transversely over the rib, and means whereby the grooved flange may be passed onto the rib.
4. The combination with an incandescent lamp socket shell having a rib adjacent its lower edge, said rib' being mutilated by an oblique transverse groove, of a shade holder detachably fitting said shell and having a grooved portion, the grooved portion being adapted to receive-the rib and being of insuflicient size to be forced or slipped directly over the rib.
5. The combination with an incandescent lamp socket shell having a screw thread-like rib adjacent its lower edge, of a shade or globe holder adapted to be supported from the rib and having an internally grooved central flange of insuflicient internal diameter to be slipped over the rib, said flange be ing split to permit the contiguous ends thereof to move out of line so that the groove in th; flange may be run onto and receive the r1 i 6. The combination with a socket shell having a mutilated thread-like rib adjacent its lower end and disposed in the same plane throughout, of a shade holder adapted to be supported from the rib and having an internally grooved central flange, the flange being of insufficient diameter to be forced directly over the rib on the socket shell, said flange being split to permit the contiguous ends thereof to move out of line so that the grooved flange maybe run onto and receive the rib. and means for clamping the contiguous ends of said split flange together.
7. A shade or globe holder adapted to be attached to an incandescent lamp socket shell or the like having a discontinuous bead thereon, said holder comprising a shade or globe engaging means :and a grooved flange having a slot extending transversely of the groove so that the edges of the slot may be bent outof line to pass the grooved flange over the bead on the shell.
8. The combination with an incandescent lamp socket shell having a discontinuous bead adjacent its lower edge, of a shade or globe holder provided with a grooved portion adapted to receive the said bead and thereby support the said holder from the head on the shell, the smallest diameter of the grooved portion being substantially the same as the exterior diameter of the shell,
the holder being attachable and detachable only by a relatively rotary movement of the shell and holder.
