My invention has for its object to produce astrong, simple, and eiiicient device which may readily be attached to a railway rail, for preventing a railway rail from creep- 1n ilhe various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized-will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objeotandadvantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a transverse section taken through a railway rail adjacent to one of the ties, the rail having thereon an anchor arranged in accordance with'one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1, the tie being in section; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken approximately on line 4--4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a slightly modified form of anchor; and Fig; 6 is a top plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a C-shaped member preferably in the form of a casting having strengthening ribs, 2, upon th exterior. The jaw in the member 1 is sbjaped to fit upon one side of the base flange of arailway rail, the lower member 3 being horizontal and the upper member, 4, inclined! The upper jaw member is made hollow so as to provide an internal chamber, 5, open on the side adapted to engage the top of the-base flange of the rail, the chamber being closed at the ends and having its top wall inclined in the direction of the length-of the rail and also inclined in the transverse direction so as to make the same angle with the horizontal as the top of the base flange of the rail. In the chamber 5 is a roller, 6, having a length approximately specification of Letters recent.

in using the device, the roller is placed in the chamber in the anchor and the latter is then slipped upon the edge of the railbase with the side atwhich the smaller end of the chamber is located engaging with the railway tie, the roller resting]- upon the top of the rail base. If the rail starts to move forward, it carries the roller toward the smaller and of the chamber, wedging the roller tightly between the top of the base flange and the top wall of the chamber and at these-me time drawing the bottom jaw of the anchor tightly against the under side of the rail base.
n order to permit a large roller to be used, I prefer to make a depression, 7, in the upper face of the lower jaw of the anchor, the depression 7 extending inwardly from the outer edge of the jaw and being large enough'to receive a considerable portion of theroller. Consequently the roller may be inserted in the anchor through the depression and the overlying portion of the aw opening without limiting the diameter of the roller to the widths of the jaw open-- ing. The depression is preferably placed just beneath the shallow end of the chamber in the -anchor so that when the roller is inserted and slipped toward. the large end of the chamber it cannot accidentally drop out through the jaw opening.
The anchor, consisting of two simple parts serves eifectively to prevent creeping of the rail as long as the anchor is held in operative relation to the rail in a direction transverse of the rail. The anchor may be secured in, operative relation to the rail in anydesired way.
In Figsl, 2 and 3 I have illustrated the anchor as having a lateral projection or ear, 8, which is adapted to fit over the'upper corner of the tie 9 and be secured thereto by a spike or other fastening means, 10.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the anchor. is secured to the rail by means of an arm, 11, extending beneath the base, 12, of a rail andhaving its free end bent around the edge of the base flange opposite to that on which the anchor is located.
As I have heretofore said, any desired form of holding means for the anchor may be employed since the holding means serves simply to maintain the anchor in proper relation to the rail and does not necessarily serve as one of the elements adapted to increase the grip on the rail as the rail tends to creep.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a C-shaped member the lower gage with the bottom of a rail base and'the upper 1aw of which has a wall inclined in the direction of the length of a rail, and a roller adapted to be placed between said wall and the top of the base flange of a rail restingon the lower jaw.
2. A device of the character described comprising a C-shaped member the lower jaw of which has a horizontal upper surface to engage with the under side of a rail base, the upper jaw having a surface in clined in the transverse direction at the same angle as the upper face of the base flange of a rail and also inclined in the direction lengthwise of the rail, and a roller adapted to be arranged between the upper jaw and the top of the rail base and to contact with the rail base and with said inclined surface.
3. A device of the character described comprising a C-shaped mcmberhaving the lower face of the jaw horizontal and having opening out of the upper face of the jaw a chamber whose upper face is inclined jaw Of Which has a horizontal face to en-.
transversely to correspond to the inclination of the upper surface of the flange of a rail base and inclined in the longitudinal direction so as to make an angle with the lower versely to correspond to the inclination of the upper surface of the flange of a rail base and inclined in the longitudinal direction so as to make an angle with the lower horizontal face, and a roller arranged in said chamber and having a diameter less than the height of the shallow end of the chamber above the top of a rail base flange resting upon said horizontal surface, the lower member of the jaw having a depression extending from beneath the chamber out through the edge of the jaw.
