STOVE LIFTER.
APPLICATION nun nov. e. 1913.
Patented D60. 29, 191
EDWARD J. H. ELLINGEN, OF MINERAL POINT, WISCONSIN.
STOVE-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed November 8, 1913. Serial No. 799,567.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. H. ELLIN- can, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Point, in the county of Iowa and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stove lifters and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel means for connection with a lifter for firmly gripping the lid of a stove and allowing the lid to be carried from place to place without any danger from falling upon the floor or elsewhere when held in different positions.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide an improved adjusting means which allows the foot of the lifter to be accommodated to the openings in different sized lids.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved means for holding the gripping plate in normal position upon the shank of the lifter.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device that is simple in construction, eiiicient in operation, and one that can be manufactured and put upon the market at 'a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be clear from the following de scription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Fi re 1, represents a side elevational view 0 my improved lifter applied to the opening in a lid. Fig. 2, represents a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 3, represents a longitudinal sectional view of the gripping plate. F i 4, represents a side elevational view 0 the lower end of the lifter with the gripping plate removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts, the numeral 1, represents a lid of a stove which has formed therein an ordinary depressed portion 2. which de ressed portion has extending from its lower end a recess 3. the upper face of which is beveled as shown at 4, to form a guide or the like for my improved lifter 5, when the same is being insorted into the recess. It may be understood that I do not limit myself to this particular form of depressed portion and recess,
but the same is generally the form employed, and I have described the same for the purpose of clearly illustrating my invention.
The lifter 5, comprises a shank 6, which has formed at its lower end a foot 7, that has substantially the same contour as the depressed portion 2, and which foot has extending from its forward end a substantially i'lat toe 8, adapted for insertion in the recess 3. The upper end of the shank (5, is reduced as at 9, and has secured thereto by means of rivets or the like 10. the
reduced end portion 11, of a handle 12,
which handle has its upper end curved slightly to accommodate a suitable engaging surface for the hand of the operator, (not shown).
For the purpose of holding the foot 7, securely within the de )ressed portion 2, to prevent the lid from falling upon the floor-,1 have provided a substantially oval-shaped gripping plate 13, which has provided therein, intermediate its ends, a longitudinal slot 1-1, through which is arranged the raised portion 15, formed integral with the upper part of the foot 7. In order to hold the gripping plate in normal position, I have pivotally and rcmovably mounted the same in adjusting openings 16, by means of a bolt 17, which also passes through the cars 18, formed upon the sides intermediate the ends of the longitudinal slot 14. A not 19, is threaded upon the free end of the bolt 17, so that in case the depressed portion 2, is of a greater depth than the ordinary form, the bolt may be removed from the lower of the adjusting openings l0, and passed through the adjacent opening. For the purpose of more securely holding the grip in plate 13, in normal position upon t re s ian 6, I have provided the rear edge thereof with teeth 20, adapted to be engaged by the rear end of the longitudinal slot 14, when the foot 7, is in position in the depressed portion 2.
It will be noted that when the toe 8, and the foot 7, are in the recess 3, and depressed portion 2, the plate 13, being of a longitudinal oval shape, surrounding the body of the plate, will rest on the lid 1, and the action of iftin the lid oil the stove causes the rear and oi the foot 7, to be jammed and forced against the rear end of the depressed portion 2. in which it is engaged, thereby forcing the plate 13, to en age the portion of the lid surrounding the depressed portion 2.
llU
Although I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of m invention, I
esire to be understood that am not to be limited to the exact details shown, however, great stress is laid upon the arrangement and cotiperation of the gripping late with the teeth on the rear edge of the s ank. By this arrangement, the gripping tendency of the plate is greatly increased without inter feri-ng with or weakening the pivotal securing means of the plate and further reducing strain on the pivot point to a minimum, thus increasing the durability of the device. Again it 1s essential that the grip ing late be flat and enga ed upon the sur ace 0 the stove lid about the opening therein.
From the above description taken in connection with the accom anying drawings, it can easily be seen that have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend onl the general and referred emodiment o my invention an that various minor chan es in detail of construction, proportion an arrangement of the parts may e made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Havin thus fully described my invention what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a lifter having a plurality of serrations on the rear edge adacent t e outer end thereof, of a late pivotal'ly secured to the' shank of said ifter and adapted for engagement withthe serrations when the lifter is in position for facilitating the gri ping of a" stove lid.
2. T ie combination with a lifter having a plurality of serrations on the rear edge adjacent the outer end thereof, of a substantially oval-sha ed plate, said plate being slotted lon itu inally and pivotally mountedabout t e shank of said lifter, and the rear end of the slot being engageable with the serrations for facilitating the gripping and holding of a stove lid.
3. A stove lid lifter including a shank, a
foot formed upon said shank, a toe integral with the forward end of the foot, said foot and toe adapted for insertion in a stove lid, a late pivotally secured upon the opposite si e of said shank and extending beyond the edges of the opening, means for adjusting said gripping plate, and means on the shank cotipcrating with the plate for facilitating the gripping and holding of a stove lid.
' 4. A stove lid lifter including a shank, a foot formed upon said shank. a substantially [lat toe formed upon the forward end of said foot, said foot and said too adapted for in scrtion in an opening of a stove lid, a plurality of teeth provided on the rear edge of the shank adjacent the lower end thereof, a substantially oval-shaped plate having a longitudinal slot therein, ears formed upon the sides of said slots intermediate the ends thereof, said' plate arranged upon the opposite sides of said shank and pivotally mounted through said ears to said shank, said plate being Hat and arranged in engagement with the upper surface of a lid about an opening therein when the shank is in position, and the rear end of the slot being engageable with said teeth for facilitating the gripping and holding of a stove lid and for increasing the efliciency thereof without weakening the securing means of the plate.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
EDWARD J. H. ELLINGEN.
