PORTABLE BOOM.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SGHIRMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Portable Boom, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a portable boom used for unloading or loading vessels, cars, or vehicles and'its object is to provide a device which may be moved from place to place, as may be necessary and which will be capable of being adjusted as may be required to accommodate the devices loading and unloading various kinds of freight carrying vehicles or vessels.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of boom and a portion of a vessel showing the boom in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the trolley used for moving the load lifted by the cable outwardly on the boom. Fig. 3 is an end view in section of the boom. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the automatic releasing trip. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the automatic releasing trip shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the releasing trip used at the head of the boom. Fig. is a side elevation of the releasing trip used at the head of the boom. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the portable stand to which the boom is secured when in use, and Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the portable stand to which the boom is secured when in use. Fig. 10 is a plan view of the trolley carriage.
The numeral 1 represents a boat or barge adjacent a dock 2.
3 represents the hatch-way of the barge and 4 the deck.
A portable stand having a base 6 from which extends a post 7, is used to secure the boom to. Extending at right angles from the base 6 is a stringer 8, which is secured thereto and the post 7 has braces 9, 10 and 11 extending from its upper end to the two base pieces 6 and 8. It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the braces and base pieces are suitably connected together by means of bolts or otherwise.

At the top of the post 7 there is cap 10, which supports a heavy universal joint 11'. The universal joint 11 has a socket 12 in which the boom 13 is secured. The boom is provided with a rib 14 and on its underside the two angles 15 and 16 are bolted, the rib being suitably bolted to the boom by means of bolts 17. The angles 15 and 16 form a track for wheels 18 of the trolley carriage 19. The trolley carriage has two eye bolts 20vtherein, one of said eye bolts being connected to the end of a cable 21 and the other eve bolt supporting a pulley 22. The trolley carriage is formed of suitably heavy material to withstand hard usage and is provided with four of the wheels 18, and at each end thereof it has an opening formed therein, the object of which is to provide means whereby the trolley may be positively held, either at the bottom of the boom or at the head of the boom, as may be required. The boom is supported from a suitable mast 24 by means of the cable 25, two cables 26 and 27 being used to relieve the strain upon the boom.
At the head of the boom there is a pulley 28, over which the cable 29 passes. said cable passing through the pulley 22 around a pulley 30 on the bucket 31 and to one of the eye bolts 20 in the trolley, thus giving a double purchase in lifting the bucket or load of material. Since it frequently occurs that it is necessary to change the place at which the bucket descends from the boom, or at which the materials are discharged from, there are catches provided for stop-- ping the trolley, both at the foot of the boom end and at the head thereof. The catches are adjustable and may be shifted along the boom so that the place of loading and the place of discharging, with respect to the length of the boom may be altered at will. The catch used at the foot of the boom is shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and it comprises an inverted U shaped member 33 having an inclined face at 34 with a catch at 35. Extending downwardly from the catch is a throw-out lever 36. This catch is held in place at the foot of the boom by means of a bolt 38 and there are a number of holes 39 in the boom, in any one of which the bolt may be inserted, thus determining the position down the boom at which the trolley will be stopped. As the bucket is raised the edge of the bucket will strike the arm 36 and cause the catch 35 to be released from the trolley, thus permitting the bucket to travel out the boom. In the same Way it is necessary to alter the distance out the boom that the trolley can go, and this 'is accomplished by means of a U shaped member 40. This member is provided with a catch at 41 and an inclined face at 42 to permit the trolley to be caught and held thereby. This member is held in connection With the trolley by means of a stiff spring 43 and the catch is released by a workman pulling on a cable or rod a l, which extends from the upper end of one of the arms of the member 40 down to the foot of the b56111:
