COMBINATION FURNITURE STMTCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nee. 2a, rota.
Application filed June a, 1912. Serial No. voaaao. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL H. Tarn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gombination Furniture Structure, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of furniture in which a number of articles of furniture of distinct type are mounted in convenientform.
It is also the object to provide pivotal means for the support for the various articles of furniture contained in this structure.
It is a further obiect' to provide a combination. piece of furniture that may be used in" a. variety of ways to change to a great extent the character of the room in which it is placed.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a plan 4 view ofa number of rooms in which the dim structure is shown partly in section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the structure showing the pivotal arrangement. Fig. 3 is an elevation, viewed from the panel side of the folding bed with the bed closed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the bed open and the table locked in position. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 Fig. 3 showing the covering batten for the folding leg of the bed. Fig. 6 is a sectional View showing form of ball-bearings pivot/ed. Fig. 7 is a detail section on line 7-7 of Fig. 5 of the winding drum for the bed. Fig. 8 detail cross section showing the covering batten as adapted to the door the structure forming one jamb. Fig. 9 is the section on line 9-9 Fig. t looking in the direction ot the arrows.
lln the drawings 10 designates the easing or base member of the pivoted structure consisting of vertical side 11]ll and the back ot 12, which is preferably provided with an offset, 13 to receive the weighted end it of the tolding bed 15, and actas a stop therefor. The bed 15 is shown secured to the sides 11 by the pivot members 16, the toot provided with the toot boards 17, of any approved design and a folding leg 18, treely pivoted at 19, to the frame of the bed.
Secured to the bottom of the bed frame is a panel of any desired configuration provided with recesses 21, which permit the legs 18 toswing intoaposition inside the casing when. thebed is folded into the easing 10. Assisting in the action'of the weight 14 of the bed is a spring winding drum 22 secured in the upper corner of the casing 10 provided with a cord 23, which has a hook 24 adapted to be secured to thefoot of the bed. When the bed is open, hook 24: may be released from its catch and allowed to wind upon the drum out of the way when the bed is in use. 7 I
Secured to the back or reverse side of the structure 'is shown the collection of receptacles 25-26 and 27, the first mentioned 25 being preferably a builet with a sideboard 28, anda receptacle 27 adapted to holding extra leaves for a table. Secured to the sideboard is a table 29, provided with hinge members 30 which engage coii erating mem-' bers 31 secured to the lower edge of the sideboard so that the upper surface of the table and board coincide and the hinge members register to receive a removable hin'ge pin 32. 1
To support the table,.especially when removed from its connection with the base member, suitable legs 33 are hinged to the bottom of the table and adapted to be tolded so that the table itself can be dropped to the position shown by dotted lines Rig. 4.
To provide ease in operation and manipul'ation of the structure, it is preferably mounted in a vertical position on an axis, which will balance the weight, shown more particularly as formed of a pivot member 34. engaging in socket 35 and provided with ball-bearings 36. The socket is preterably set in the floor and forms a flush surface therewith, and the upper in any suitable structure as a portion of awall or the ceiling of a room.
To cover therecess in the panels 20 provided for the folding leg ofjthe bed. a. batten 37, shown in Figs. 1 and 5 as forming the portion of a casing where the structure is embodied in the wall of a series of rooms acting as an apartment apparently of a greater number of difl'erent rooms than the actual physical number inclosed by the walls of the apartment.
Providing for the movement of the structure to carry the table through the contracted opening occupied by the structure, a door is shown pivoted adjacent to one of the sides 11, and shown provided with a stop and a portion of the batten 37 formed integral with the door and adapted neatly to match the corresponding batten 37 on the opposite side.
It will readily be seen that this combination bed structure is particularly adapted to the situation shown in Fig. 1 in which fioor plan, the large room may be used alternately asa reception room, sleeping room or dining room depending on the type of furniture which is exposed by the structure, the smaller room acting as a kitchen, butlers pantry and repository for the conveniences when they are not desired in the alternative position.
What I claim is:-
1. A combination furniture structure, comprising a base member mounted in a vertical plane, said base member formed of top and bottom members, L-shaped sides connecting said top and bottom, a back panel, a folding bed frame pivoted in the base member and a panel on the bed frame, said bed frame and the panel mounted thereon adapted ,to form a front for the base member in the closed position, the head of said bed engaging the lower end of said back panel, said panel acting as a stop therefor.
2. The combination with a wall having an opening therein, of'a base member pivoted centrally to swing horizontally in said opening, said base member formed of top and bottom members, sides connecting said top and bottom members, a back panel terminating at its lower edge above the bottom member, and a folding bed-frame pivoted on the sides in such position that the head of the bed is engaged by the lower end of the panel to limit the pivotal movement thereof.
3. The combination with a wall having an opening therein, of a base member centrally to swing horizontally in sai opening, said base member formed of to and bottom members, sides connecting said top and bottom members, a. back panel terminating at its lower edge above the bottom member, and a folding bed frame pivoted on the sides in such position that the head of the bed is engaged by the lower end of the panel to limit the pivotal movement thereof, and a hinged door on one side of the wall opening adapted to close against the vertical edge of the base member to operate with the latter in closing the wall opening and which, when opened, permits the swinging of the base member.
4. ln a combination furniture structure, the combination with a wall having an 0 ening therein, of a base member forme of top and bottom members and L-shaped side members connected to said top and bottom members, said base member pivoted centrally to swing horizontally and arranged with one side flush withthe wall and projecting on the opposite side thereof, and a panel hin ed to one side of the opening adapted to c ose against the vertical edge of the pivoted base member cooperating with the latter to close the wall opening and arranged to open to permit pivotal movement of said base member.
In witness that I claim the fore oing I have hereunto subscribed my name t is 31st day of May, 1912.
