Description

WILLIAM F. REACH, OF CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T'O A. G. SPALDING & BROS. MANFG. COMPANY, 0F CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION 0F MASSACHUSETTS.
THROWING-I-IAMMER.
To all a0/wm it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. REACH, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicopee, Massachusetts, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in l1`hrowing-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a throwing hammer, used in athletic sports, and it is my aim to construct a hammer with a wear and shock resisting shell with a softer internal filling or body, the filling material being of greater specific gravity than the shell, as in the patent of Murphy 1036138, August 20, 1912, and to further provide a ball bearing connection so as to impart a fast spinning m0- tion to the hammer head as it is thrown around preparatory to hurling, the result being an increased distance of throw.
By my invention I secure the benefit of the lead filling of the Murphy patent with the wear resistance shell and the ball bear ing connection carried by the shell.
ln the drawing I have illustrated in the figure a sectional view of the hammer showing also in the figure the full lines and wire handle for spinning the device preparatory to hurling.
In the drawing a hollow shell is shown at A, this being made of' a shock and wear resisting material, and this casing is filled through the openings a, with a filling of lead or some heavy substance. The casing is provided with an integral core which eX- tends diametrically through the hammer and located within this core is an axle b, screw threaded as at c, at one end and carrying a nut d, the nut being within an enlarged recess vin the core which carries the bushing e, and between the inclined face of the bushing and the nut are located anti-friction balls f. There is a like recess at the opposite Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1911.
end of the core with a like bushing e and ball bearings f, but instead of the nut cl the axle is provided with a head g, fitting -within the recess and the balls are between the inclined face of the bushing and an inclined shoulder on the head. This head protrudes from the recess and is provided with an eye into which is fitted a wire link L, which supports a handle i. It will be seen that a very simple construction is thus provided, and there is combined the advantages of the Murphy patent referred to as well as the ball bearing feature of the patent of Breakspear Number 649885 of Mav l5, 1900.
My improved construction gives me the benefit of the wear resisting shell while the central core prevents displacement of the interior filling.
The openings a are closed by plugs la, and these may be removed to adjust the weight of' the lead by subtracting or adding thereto, in case of over or under weight, and thereafter these plugs may be screwed and riveted into place.
It will be observed that a very strong construction is provided by the shell and the centrally arranged core.
What I claim isz- A throwing hammer comprising a shock and wear resisting shell having a central core made integral with the shell so as to assure a central position of said core with relation to the shell, the shell having a suitable filling and a handle connected with the core, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. REACH.
