Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LANSING ONDERDONK,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York,
State of New York, have invented certain drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in looper operating mecha nism for sewing machines, and has for 'its object to provide a mechanism for operating a looper back and forth'in a single plane, which mechanism is so constructed as to give a positive movement to the looper with a dwell at each end of its stroke,
whereby the stroke of the looper may be very short and the looper may move quickly from one end of its stroke to the other.
A. further object of the invention, is to provide a; looper which is mounted on a vertical shaft and moves back and forth in a single plane, with mechanism for operating the same positively, and directly from the end of a shaft, located substantially at right angles to the looper shaft.
. Still further objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully described.

The bed plate 1 has rising therefrom, an overhanging arm 2 in which reciprocates a needle bar 3. These parts are however, of the usual construction and will not need further description.
Mounted inthe overhanging arm is a rotating shaft which is operated by the usual belt wheel 4. Said operating shaft isgeared toa lower rotating-shaft 5 by means of a belt 6. Said lower rotating shaft 5 is mounted in suitable bearings 7, 8, and 9.
The looper 10 as herein shown, is of the thread carrying type and is mounted on the end of the vertical shaft or looper support 11. Said looper support is carried by spaced bearings 12 and 13, which are formed in the ends of arms extending from the bracket 15 secured to the under side of the work support by suitable screws 16, which pass through slots in the bracket so that said bracket may be adjusted.
The looper shaft or support 11, is held from longitudinal movement in its bearing by means of the collars 17 and 18. Said looper support is slightly flattened at 19 and an arm 20 which is forked at its inner end,
straddle said flattened portion of the looper movement to the looper shaft orsupport.
On the forward end of the main shaft 5, is a crank member 22. Said crank disk 22 is provided with a crank arm or lug'23 ex- This connection between the arm tending outward at an acute angle to the axis of the shaft. Said crank arm 23 is forked to receive a ball 2 L which rests in suitable spherical pockets in the outer ends of the crank arm 23, so that said ball mayv move freely in any direction therein.
The ball 24 is provided with an opening therethrough which receives the arm 20 pivoted to the looper support.
As the main shaft rotates, the' crank arm carried on the end thereof, will carrythe end of the arm 20 around with it, thus imparting to the looper support, an oscillating movement. The 'pivotal connection between the arm 20 and the looper support, allows said arm to follow the movements of the ball carried in the outer end of the crank arm. The pivotal connection between the operating arm for the looper su port and the looper support, is slightly helow the axis of the main shaft, and therefore, the
distance which the ball slips outward on the arm '20 when said arm is below the pivotal point, is slightly less than the distance which the ball slides outward on the arm when said arm is above the pivotal point.
The looper is so positioned, that when the arm is above the pivotalpoint, said looper is being retracted and when the arm is moved in a path below the pivotal point, the looper is moving forward into the needle loop.- For the reasons above noted, a move I passing through the axis of the shaft, said arm will receive little or no movement about its pivotal point, and the looper support will be oscillated at its maximum speed.
From the above statement, it will be seen that I have provided a looper movement wherein a looper mounted on a vertical shaft is driven from a shaft at right angles thereto by a positive connection, directly to the shaft and said connection is so con-- structed and arranged that the looper receives a dwell at each'end of its stroke, is moved quickly out of the needle loop, and is moved still more quickly into the needle loop.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1-.
1. A looper mechanism including in combination a looper support, a looper carried thereby, means for supporting said looper support whereby said looper moves back and forth in a single plane, a looper operating shaft arranged at right angles to said looper support, the axis of said looper support and the axis of said operating shaft lying substantially in the same plane, and means for connecting said looper support directly to said looper operating shaft including an arm pivotally connected to one of said parts and a second arm rigidly connected with the other part and cooperating with said first named arm.
2. A looper operating mechanism including in combination, a looper support, a looper carried thereby, means for supporting said looper support, whereby the looper moves back and forth in a single plane, a shaft for operating said looper located substantially at right angles to the looper support, the axis of said looper support and the axis of said shaft lying substantially in the same plane,.a crank arm carried by said shaft, an arm pivoted to said looper support, a ball carried by said crank arm, and loosely engaging said arm carried by the looper support.
3. The combination with a work support, of a looper'support arranged substantially at right angles thereto, a looper carried by said support, a shaft for operating said looper support located substantially parallel with said work support, theaxis' of said with said work'support, an arm having a connection with the looper support so as to move freely in a plane containing the axis of said looper support, and a crank arm carried by the looper operating shaft, and engaging the arm carried by the looper support.
5. The combination with a needle, a looper moving in a plane substantially at right angles to the path of said needle, a support for said looper, an operating shaft for said looper located substantially at right angles to the looper support, the axis of the looper support and the axis of the operating shaft lying substantially in the same plane, andmeans for directly connecting said looper support to said looper operating shaft including an arm pivotally connected to said looper support so as an axis at right angles to the path of the needle, and an arm rigidly carried by said operating shaft, and cooperating with said arm on the looper support.
6. The combination with" a needle, of a looper moving in a plane substantially at right angles to the path of said needle, a support for said looper, for said looper located substantially at right angles to the looper support, an arm connected to said looper support so as to move in a plane longitudinally of the looper support, and a crank arm carried by said looper operating shaft and engaging the arm on the looper support. 1
7. The combination of a needle, of a looper, moving in a plane substantially at right angles to the path of the needle, a support for said looper, an arm pivoted to said looper support so as to swing. longitudinally thereof, an operating shaft for said looper, located substantially at right angles thereto, and a crank arm carried by said operating shaft and having a universal sliding connection with the arm on said looper support.
8. The combination of a looper, moving in a plane substantially at right angles to the path of the needle, a support for said looper, an arm pivoted to said looper sup port so as to swing longitudinally thereof, an operating shaft located at right angles to the loopersupport, a crank arm carried by the forward end of said shaft, a ball to swing about an operating shaft carried by said crank arm and having free movement therein, said ball slidingly engaging the arm on the looper support.
9. The combination of a needle, a looper moving in a plane substantially at right angles to the path of the needle, a looper support for said looper, spaced bearings carrying said looper support, collars secured to said looper support so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the looper support, said looper support having a flattened portion between said bearings, a forked arm pivoted to said flattened portion of the looper support, an operating shaft arranged at right angles to the looper support, a crank arm carried by said operating shaft, a ball freely mounted in said crank arm, and having a sliding connection with the arm on the looper support.
10. The combination of a needle, of a looper moving in a single plane substantially at right angles to the needle path, a support for said looper, ashaft located substantially at right angles to said looper support, andmeans for connecting said shaft directly to said looper support including an arm pivoted to the looper. support and swinging about an axis at right angles to the path of the needle, and a second arm carried by the shaft and cooperating-with said first named arm, whereby said looper is given a dwell at each end of its stroke, is moved quickly out of the needle loop, and
is moved into the needle loop at a speed means for connecting said second arm to the arm mounted on said shaft.
12. The combination of a work support,
of a looper support arranged substantially at right angles thereto, a bracket carrying said looper support, a shaft for operating ,said looper support, said looper support and said shaft lying substantially in the same plane, means whereby the bracket for the looper support may be adjusted in a direction at right angles to the operating shaft, an arm carried by the forward end of the operating shaft, and extending at an acute angle thereto, a second arm pivoted to the looper support, and a ball connection between said arms. v
