Application filed August 5,1922. Serial No. 579,806.
This invention relates tolooper-actuating mechanisms for sewing machines and has for an object to provide such a mechanism which is easy of construction, compact, du-
rable, efiicient in operation, and in which the I necessary adjustments are provided to adapt it to various classes of work and stitching operations. V
In accordance with the present invention one or more I loopers are secured upon a suitablelooper-carrienand are, given looptaking movements inthe direction'of their length across thejline of seam-formation and sidewise, or so-called needle-avoiding movements, in,,the direction of the line of seam-formation. I j y r a I H The looper-carrier is preferably adjustably secured upon a tubularinember which in turnis rotatably mounted upon a sleeve slidinglysupported upon an arbor fixed in bearingsin the machine base. e
The looper-carrier is gi ven its loop-seizing movements by an eccentric secured upon a main or. actuating shaftextending lengthfwis'e of the machine hase whicheccentri'c 'is'operatively connected bya suitablepitman to an arm projecting from sai d tubularmember; sidewise movements are imparted to the looper-carrier from the second 7 eccentric also secured uponthemain-shaft and which is surrounded by a-strap havinga def I avobblmgon the eccentric 24.
pending pin-which slidingly fits, within a socket formed in'said sleeve. V 1
The invention, isillustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. lis'a 'sideelevation, partly in section, of a portion of a sewing machine embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a'plan view thereof; Fig.3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33,Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 1,,and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of parts employed for supporting the loopercarrier. v p 1 Referring" more particularly to the drawings the'invention is. shown embodied in a.
sewing-machine comprising a' base 1, head 2, feeding mechanism 3, cloth-presser land a needle-bar 5 which latter carries one or more needles 6. Journaled in bearings 7 rising from the basel, is a main or, actuating shaft 8 which is rotated "ina manner common to sewing machines. r
The improved looper mechanism com} prises oneor more loopers 9 secured upon a looper-carrler 10 provlded with a split hub 1 1 adapted to beadjustably clamped, by means of screws 12, upon a tubular loop,-
er-actuating member 13 provided with an arm lewhich carries a ball 15 provided with a steady pin 16. The tubular member 13 is rotatably mounted upon a tubular shaft orsleeve 17 having a reducedportion 17 affording a shoulder l8. The reduced portion 17 Q of the sleeve 17 is preferably threaded at 20 and a split colla1119 is threaded thereon, thus. the shoulder 18 and'thecollar 19e aiford means for-preventingendwise movement of themember' l3 on the sleeve 17. A split pinch cOllar 21 preferably fits over the collar 19 and holds it in any position of adjustment on the sleeve 17, which is slidingly supported upon arod or arbor 22 fixed in thebase l, transversely of the mainshaft .8, by means of the set-screws 23.
. Oscillatory movements are imparted to the tubular member 13 and the attached looper carrier 10 by an eccentric 24 secured upon the shaft 8... A pitman 25 is formed at its upper. end with a strap 26 which surrounds the eccentric 24 and at its lowerpend with a strap 27 which receivesthe ball 15 ,To the pitman 25 there is secured a sloitted guide-block281 which coacts with the pin 16 to steady the pitman and prevent it from tric 29 secured upon the shaft 8.. A strap 30 surrounds the eccentric 29 and is provided with pin-31which is slidingly fitted within'a tubular socket 32 carried by the sleeve 17 mounted for sidewise movement upon the'arbor 22. p 1 I Both looper-actuating elements on the main-shaft are disposed closelyv adjacent between; main-shaft hearings which contributes' to compactness and short operative connections involving a minimum of'inertia and momentum, and hence .vibration'of the mach ne under hlgh speed conditions.

9. A looper-actuating mechanism for sewrality 0t actuating eccentrics mounted upon said shaft on opposite sides of'the vertical plane of the axis of rocking movement of the looper-support, and operative connections between said actuating eccentrics and said support and looper-carrier, respectively,
'whereby they are given their respective movements.
10. A looper-actuatlng mechanism for sewing machines comprising a mam-shaft,
a looper, a looper-carrier mountedto rock and slide on an axis extending below and transversely of said main-shaft, an eccen- 20 trio on said main-shaft, a' pin-and-socket sliding connection transverse to both said main-shaft and aXis between said eccentric and said looper-carrier for imparting t0 the latter its sliding movements, at second eccentrio on said shaft, and a pitman connecting said eccentric to. said looper-carrier for rocking the latter.
' 11. Ina sewing machine, a frame, an arbor fixed therein, an endwise movable sleeve fitted upon said arbor, a looper-carrier mounted for rocking movements upon and relative to said sleevecoaxially with the latter and confined against endwise movement relative to said sleeve, and separate connections for imparting respectively to said sleeve its endwise movements and to said looper-carrier its rocking movements.
In testimony whereof, I" have signed my name to this specification.
