Description

tirant Biafra VIRjGIL PRICE, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 112,180, dated February 28, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALDRICS.
The Schedule referred to'in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL PRICE, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baldrics, 86e; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l represents a back view of a portion of a baldi-ic made on my new plan.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of baldrics, bracelets, belts, Snc., by making the same in sections of links which can be readily taken apart. Thereby such articles are made durable, flexible, and adjustable in length.
To baldrics especially this invention is applicable.
'lhey were heretofore mostly made of leather or wovenfabrics, which, when exposed to inclement weather, were soon destroyed or greatly injured. By making them of sections of metal they become perfectly indestructible by ordinary Wear, and can at the same time be more richly'and permanently ornamented than the yielding surfaces heretofore in use. By being made in Sections which can be taken apart their extension and contraction lengthwise become easy, as well as the substitution of one link for another, or the reversing of links, when different ornaments are to be displayed. The same advantages apply to belts, bracelets, and all other things to which my improved construction of links is applicable.
My invention consists, rst, in making baldrics of links of metal, as aforesaid; and, secondly, in such a construction of links that the same can be readily taken apart, and will still be rmly held together when in use. 4
A Ain the drawing is a series of metal plates, which constitute the alternate links of the baldi-ic.
B B are the remaining links of the same..
Each plate A has a T-shaped projection, a, at each end.
Each link B is made box-shaped, that is to say, has a face plate, b, a back plate, c, and connectingribs or ledges, so that a space will be between b and c. The back plate c, which is somewhat less broad than the face plate, has a-transverse slot in it.
The links A are connected to the links B by inserting the heads of the pins a through the slots of the plates c, into the boxes B, while such heads are in line with such slots; then turning the links A so that the heads of the pins a will be at right angles to the said slot-s, as shown in fig. l. The parts are' then connected, but in such Ymanner that the face plates of the links B will be forward of the plates A, overlapping the same, asin iig. 2, and thus forming a continuous uninterrupted face of the chain baldric.
The faces of the plates A and b can' be ornamented in suitable manner by means of embossing, enamcling, by precious stones, or otherwise.
lhe plates A may even be ornamented on both faces, so that they can be reversed to display different ornaments for different occasions.
The several face plates may be of suitable shape, either quadrangular or of other form.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An ornamental baldi-ic, belt, or chain, made in sections of metal plates, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The plates A, having the T-shaped pins a, in combination with the plates B, which contain slots for the reception of pins a, all arranged substantially as set forth;
VIRGIL PRICE.
