OOOOCDO JOHN WEIL, 0F MANSFIELD, OHIO.
PUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Application filed August 27, 1914. Serial No. 858,809.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JQHN WEIL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to puzzles, and more particularly to that class of puzzles wherein a certain number of figures are to be arranged in such a manner as to produce a predetermined result.
The present invention contemplates the use of nine squares or rectangles arranged in rectangular form, each of the'nine squares being provided with four figures, and so arranged that all of the horizontal or vertical rows, as well as the two main diagonal rows of figures will equal a predetermined amount when added.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a plan view of nine square blocks or cards arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of one of the blocks or cards. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of a modified form wherein a single block or card has the nine squares arranged thereon. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of one figure and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of a portion of Fig. 3 showing one of the rectangles with four figures placed thereon.
In Fig. 1 reference letter A indicates a block or card on which is printed the four numerals 1, 2,3 and 1 as shown. It will be noticed that these numerals are so arranged on the block or card A that there is no indication whatever as to which is the top, bottom or sides of the block.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I prefer to make the blocks A of cardboard and print the numerals 1, 2, 3, and 1 thereon, although of course the same result may be accomplished in any other desired manner. I provide nine cards A, all of which have the numerals 1, 2, 3 and A printed thereon as above described, and the solution of the puzzle comprises the arrangement of these blocks in such a manner that each horizontal or vertical row of figures comprises six figures each. The two main diagonal rows BC and DE also comprise six figures each. It will be noticed that the same figure does not appear in any one of these horizontal, vertical or diagonal rows more than twice, and likewise the same sequence of figures, namely 1, 2, 3 and 4, is maintained at each of the inner adjacent corners F.
I am aware that numerous puzzles have been devised which contemplate the use of a series of blocks or cards so arranged that the horizontal, vertical or diagonal rows of characters on the blocks will produce a certain result, but my invention contemplates the use of four figures on each block and, furthermore, these figures are arranged in sequence.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 I provide a single block or card on which the squares or rectangles A are printed, there being nine such squares. In this case I provide thirty-six small cards or blocks, each having a figure printed thereon as shown by G in Fig. 1. It will be understood of course that nine sets of these figures are provided, each set comprising the numerals 1, 2, 3 and 4. In this modified form the so lution of the puzzle is exactly the same as described above, except that the small blocks G with the numerals thereon are to be placed on the circular spaces H and, furthermore, each rectangle A must contain one full set of figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 when the solution is complete.
It will be understood that any other characters desired may be placed on the blocks A, providing of course there is nothing which indicates the top, bottom or sides of the block. For instance the space unoccu pied might be used for advertising or illustrating purposes, or for any other purpose desired.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A puzzle comprising nine squares, each square having four figures in sequence thereon, the said figures being so arranged that the sum of any horizontal, vertical or diagonal row will equal a predetermined amount.
2. A puzzle comprising nine sets of figures, there being four figures in sequence in each set, the said figures being arranged in horizontal, vertical and diagonal rows of six figures each so that the sum of any said row will equal a predetermined amount.
3. A puzzle comprising a plurality of parallelograms adapted to be arranged in rectangular form, a set of four figures in sequence, adapted to be arranged on each parallelogram, one figure in each quadrant thereof, and so arranged that th f,
any horizontal, vertical or diagonal row of said figures Will equal a predetermined amount.
i. A .puzzle comprising nine parallelograms adapted to be arranged in rectangular form, a set of four figures in, sequence adapted to be arranged on each parallelogram so as to present six horizontal, six Vertical and two diagonal rows. of six figures each, and the sum of the figures in any said horizontal, vertical or diagonal 'roW being Copies ot this patent inay be obtained for comprising the numerals 1,2, 3 and 4 adapted to be arranged on each parallelogram, one figure in each quadrant thereof, the sum of any horizontal or vertical row of figures being equal to fifteen.
' 7. In a puzzle, a rectangle comprising nine parallelograms, a set of four figures comprising the numerals l, 2, 3 and 4: adapted to be arranged on each parallelogram, one figure in each quadrant thereof, the sum of each of the tWo main diagonal roWs of figures being equal to fifteen.
8. In a puzzle, a rectangle comprising nine parallelograms, a set offour figures comprising the numerals 1, 2, 3 and a adapted to be arranged on each parallelogram, one figure in each quadrant thereof, the sum of. any horizontal or vertical roW, or the tWo main diagonal rows of figures being equal to fifteen.
In testimony whereof I affix my. signature in presence of two Witnesses. 1 JOHN WEIL.
