specification of Letters Patent. l j Patented Dec, 15a 1mg Application filed December 21, 1910. i Serial No. 598,489.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN JAMEs IRVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellwood, in the county of4 Blair and State `provision of means for elevating one of the sides as the car is dumped in that direction and for supporting the side in position to be properly engaged with its support, to* gether with means actuated by the side for automatically rerighting the car after the load is dumped and for guiding the body into intimate contact with the body ofthe car.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the followingspecic description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which: v
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the body of the car in upright position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing it in dumping position. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1 looking in direction indicated by arrow.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents a truck of any suitable type which is provided with a central pivoting sill 2 having upstanding pivoting ears 3 which are-connected by means of the pivotal bolt 4 with similar ears 5 carried upon a central pivoting sill 6 secured to the floor 7 of the car body.
The car body comprises the floor 7, the end members 8, and the movable sides 9 which latter members have their lower ends guided into closing position with the ends and body by means of reinforcing brackets 10 which are inturned at their ends so as to provide a cam surface 11 adapted to engage the outwardly projecting fingers 12 carried by the floor. The sides are also provided with connecting strips 13 having projecting lower ends 14 adapted to engage apertured i tion.
brackets 15 carried by the bottom. Bracing rods 16 are also provided which are bridged between the brackets 10 and a central rib 17 Pivoted atvone end in brackets 18 carriedy by the ends 8 are raising levers 19 whosey opposite ends are pivotally connected in brackets 20 carried upon the ends of the sides adjacent theirupper edges and carry suitable bracing arms 21 which limit the downward movement of the sides when in raised position as shown in Fig. 3. These levers have adjustably connected thereto adjacent their pivotal point with the bracket 18, suitable operating rods 22 which have their lower ends pivotally connected to the links 23 which have their inner ends pivotally mounted in ears 24 upon the central sill 2. In normal position, the lower ends of the rods 22 rest upon bracket arms 25 carried by the truck so that when the car is tilted to one side, the rods 22 will rest upon the brackets and force the levers 19 upwardly thus raising one of the sides. After the load has been dumped the side thus raised acts as a counter-weight to return the body of the car to normal horizontal posi- The fulcrum point ofthe levers 19 upon the rods 22 being arranged adjacent the brackets 18, a considerable leverage is obtained by the comparatively small weight of the sides 9. j lt will be noticed that the sides are freely pivoted to the leversfand are limited in their downward movement by the arms 21 so that when they are returned to operative position for closing the body, they will be properly guided into engagement with the fingers 12 and the extensions 14 will properly engage the apertured brackets 15. i j
Suitable chains are pivoted to opposite ends of the car adjacent each side and similar chains are pivoted to opposite ends of the truck at each side thereof, as shown at 26 and 27. Chains 27 carry the ordinary lever connectors ywhich are adapted to connect with the chains 26 so ask to hold the car in upright'or load containing position.
When the chains 26 and 27 at one side ofk the car are released that side of the car will be permitted to rise or tilt to the position shown in Fig. 3. This tilting of the car brings the links 23 and the raising rods 22 upon the brackets 25, thus producing a rigid support which when the car tilts, will raise the arms 19 and thus elevate the side 9.
side of said car, brackets mounted at right angles upon said door, each of said brackets l Having thus describedthe invention, what is claimedv isi f Y in a device of the kind described the combination of a dump car, saidcar having an open side, a door arranged to close the open bracketslto cause said vdoor to. contact With* said carga plurality of socket members carried by said car into `which the beveled ends` of saidtenons' arev arranged to project as said bracket cam surfaces are guided Within SaidY guides, yand means whereby said door is moved rinto engagement With said guides.
In testimony whereof I aix my signaf ture in 'presence oftWo Witnesses.
