'.BEVEL.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application led July 30, 1914. Serial No. 854,034.
To all whom. it' may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS B. Mc- Gnarrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southingtomin the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bevels; and l do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a plan view of a bevel constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a side view of the same. Fig. 3 a sectional view showing the blade members in the locked position with the lever shown in its open position in broken lines. Fig. t a plan view of the handle portion with the blade, bloclrfand lever removed. Fig. 5 a sectional view! n the line a-b of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 an unde J ide view of the block, removed. Fig. 7 an d view of the lever, detached.
ThY invention relates to an improvement in'bevels in which the blade is adjustably mounted in a handle, the object being to provide simple and effective means for locking the blade in various positions of adjustment, which means will not interfere with the use of the implement; and the invention consists Vin the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
rlhe blade 2 is of usual construction provided with a slot 3 Jfor the clearance of a screw stud et which extends through the upper portion 5 of the handle into engagement with the under portion 6 in the usual way. ln my improved construction the head 7 of the stud is seated in a block 8 one side of which is cut away to form a notch 9 for the Y reception of the cam head end 10 of a lever 11. rllhe block 8 is locatedin a chamber 12 so as to be flush with the outer face of the upper portion 5 of the handle, and this chamber 12 connects by a groove 13 with a recess 14k which recess forms a chamber for the reception of the finger-piece 15 or end of the lever 11, and where the groove 13 enters the chamber 12 is a depression 16 for the enlarged cam head 10 of the lever 11, the lever turning on this head as a fulcrum the tendency of the movement being to crowd the upper and under members together and clamp the blade between them. When the lever is in the locked position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the finger-piece 15 is substantially Hush with the outer surface of the upper portion 5 of the handle Jfrom which it may be conveniently moved as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 so as to turn the head to relieve pressure on the blade.
An objection to many forms of bevels is that the adjustment is made at the rear end of the handle and usually by a screw the head of which is liable to interfere with the use of the bevel. In my improved clamping device the bevel may lie ilat upon the work, and the locking device is always in convenient position for use.
I claim 1. A bevel comprising a handle having upper and under members, a blade adapted to slide between the members, the upper member being formed with a recess, a block located in said recess, a screw extending through said block and through the upper member into engagement with the under member, the said block being cut away at one side the said upper member being formed with a channel and with a clearance opening into which the channel opens, andV a lever located in said channel, the head of the lever engaging with said block whereby when the lever is forced against the upper member the two members will be crowded together.
2. A bevel comprising a handle having upper and under members, a blade extending between the members, the upper member being formed with a chamber and with a clearance opening, and with a groove connecting the chamber and clearance opening, said upper member being also provided with a depression at the junction of the groove and chamber, a block located in said chamber and cut away on one side over said depression, a screw passing through said block and upper member and into engagement With the under member, e lever formed With a head located in said depression and adapted to engage with said block, said lever extending into said groove and formed with Aa linger-piece adapted to enter seid Clearance opening.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two Subsoribmg Witnesses.
NICHOLAS B. MCGRATH.
