Description

T. H. NOONEN.
NECKTIE FORMER AND HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.3,1913.

fnnirnn sra'rns ra'rnn'r OFFHJE;
THOMAS HAMILTON NOONEN, 03? NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE. NOONEN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEYV YORK.
NECK'IIE FORMER AND HOLDER.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Trronns H. NOONEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New Rochelle, in the county of :W'estchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie Formers and Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enabl those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lhis invention relates to devices for use in connection with what are known as fouriii-hand neck ties or scarfs, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device ofthis class designed particularly for use in connection with turn-down collars so as to avoid the necessity of passing the tie or scarf around the neck, and on which the tie or scarf may be easily and conveniently formed or tied, and which also may be easily and securely connected with the collar and collar button, and will remain firmly in the desired position.
l he invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent granted to me April 23, 1907, No. 851,4:30; and also an improvement on the invention described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent granted to me August 8, 1911, Number 999,845; and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accoinpanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view showing my ime proved neck tie former and holder connected with a collar, and the neck band of a shirt in the usual manner, the neck band of the shirt being not shown, and the front part of the former and holder being broken away ;-F ig. 2 a back view of the neck tie former and holder detached ;-Fig. 3 a sec tion on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and ;Fig. 4 a view showing a modification. of that part of the neck tie former or holder, whereby it is connected with a collar button.
My improved neck tie former and holder is composed of spring wire, and in the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 1 take apiece of spring wire and bend it centrally to form a spring ring (4 below which the parts a of the wire are crossed and re-crossed to form a small loop a below which the said parts a of the wire are bent to form oppositely directed and upwardly directed spring side portions {4* which serve as thumb and finger pieces in the manipulation of the device, as hereinafter described, and said parts of the wire are then bent to form loop-shaped side wings a, after which the ends of said parts of the wire are connected with a central metallic shield Z), the side edges of said shield being folded over said ends, as shown at b", and as in the patents hereinbefore referred to. The shield Z2 is wider at the top than at the bottom, the side edges being tapered downv'ardly and inwardly, and a wire loop orring 0 is connected with the lower end of the shield b in the same manner, or the ring or loop 0 may be formed integrally with the top part a of one of the wings a. As thus constructed, the bottom parts a of the wings (5 together with the parts a, a and a form the back portion of my improved tie former and holder, while the top parts a of the wings a together with the shield Z) and loop or ring 0 form the front thereof, and in the use of the de vice, the back part is connected with the collar button (Z, while the front part extends downwardly over and covers said collar button.
In the use of this device, the tie, which is.
the turndown portion of the collar, as 9 shown in Fig. 1, and the parts (0* of the back portion of the device are compressed by a thumb and finger, which operation opens the small loop a through which the head of the button (Z is passed, and when the pressure is released from the parts a", said parts spring outwardly so as to close or partially close the loop a which engages the shank of the button, and this operation securely holds the device in place.
In Fig. a I have shown a modification of the back part of the device in which the wire is bent to form a loop 7 which takes the place of the loop a, in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to.3 inclusive. The side portions of the loop f are extended downwardly and laterally to form downwardly directed V-shaped members f which open upwardly and the outer side portions of which are bent to form the wings a the rest of the tie former and holder being the same as in the construction shown in Figs.
1 to 3 inclusive.
In applying a tie the formerv and holder made, as shown in Fig. A, to a collar, the Wings a are inserted under the turn-down ends 6 of the collar, and a thumb and finger are applied to the outer sides of the parts 7 and pressure is applied thereto. This operation opens the loop f so as to permit the passage of the head of the collar button therethrough, aftfe 'jwhich the pressure on the outer sides f of the parts f is removed and said'parts spring outwardly and close the loop f around theshank of the collar button.
With this improvement,I provide means whereby the neck tie former and holder may be used in connection with a turn-down collar and connected with the collar button in tion shown in Fig. 4 is employed so as to open the loop 7.
Although I have described my improved tie former and holder in its preferred form,
my invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, and changes therein and modifications there of may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
' Having fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A necktie former and holder of the class described, said device comprising laterally directed top wings and front and back members, the back member being provided with a spring loop the sides of which are crossed and provided with laterally directed portions the compression of which will open said loop, and the front member comprising a shield which extends from the tops of said Wings downwardly in front of said loop, and is provided at its lower end with a mug or loop.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of the subsoribingwitnesses thisv 26th day of November, 1913.
