To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO PE'IEBMANN, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of (iroton, county of Temp kins, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platen-Shifts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to the platen shifts of front strike foldablc typewriting machines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the carriage and platen may be moved vertically to adapt the type-bars to have a plurality of characters thereon, and the said platen positively limited in its vertical movement to ada t the same to properly pr sition the work sleet, and at the same time simplify the construction of the mechanism ordinarily employed for this purpose.
Another object of the invention to provide simple and efficient mechanism by which the shift levers may be located on the same side of the machine, and the shift mechanism so operated that the carriage and platen will be moved positively and evenly and the shifting movement limited on both sides of the machine.

The machine frame 10 has guiding portions 11 formed integral therewith on opposite sides thereof through which posts 12 pass, and on the posts is a support 13. A carriage 14 is mounted on the support 13 and held to the carriage is a platen 15. The support 13 may be foldable to adapt the carriage and platen to be moved into overhanging relation to the key-levers or type-bars of the machine, though it will be understood that this feature as well as the other parts already referred to may he of the usual or of any preferred construction.
The posts or slides 12 are connected to gethcr by a transversely extending rod 16, and this rod is connected on one side of the machine by a short lever [7, Fig. 6, to a transversely extending shift lever rod 18. ()n the other side of the machine and in close relation to each other are the shift levers 1t) and 20. The lever 20 may be for the upper case or capitals and has a substantially straight body portion which ishcld to the rod 18 which forms a pivot therefor and said lever .20 is connected at its inner end to the rod lfi. 29 or otherwise arranged as desired, the said lever being normally forced downward by means of a spring 30, one end of which is attached to the part 26 of the shift lever 19, the other end of said spring being attached to the machine frame.
Arms 31 are held to the transverse rod 16 on opposite sides of the machine, and said arms are adapted to move vertically with the posts 12. The arms 31 each have a cam portion 32 at its upper and inner edge, one of which is adapted to be engaged by the projecting part 27 of theshift lever 19. A bar 33 extends transversely of the machine and connects the two arms 31 together so that they may both rock in unison on the rod 16, and said bar'has an angular. portion or flange, as 34, at each end to engage about the posts 12 to prevent sidewise movement of the bar 33, and to secure the arms to the bar 33 are angular brackets 35 which are held to said bar and to the arms, as shown best in Fig. 5. The arms 31 are both shownas provided with a cam portion, though such cam portion is needed on one arm only, but by having both arms alike, the said arms are interchangeable and require only one set of dies to manufacture the same.
It will be seen that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the shift lever 20 operated to move the posts 12 vertically, the projection 27 on the shift lever 19, by reason of the cam part 32, will cause the arms to rock on the rod 16 and in doing so the upper end 36 of the arms will engage the lower end of a stop 37 and will thus limit the vertical movement of said posts. There may be a stop 37 on each side of the machine, and adjacent to each stop 37 is a second but shorter stop 38. These stops 37 and 38 are in alinement so far as the rocking movement of the arms 31 are concerned, and are in the form of screws to permit adjustment thereof, and each screw when adj usted may be locked in its adjusted position by means of a nut 39. The stops or screws 37 and 38 are held in a boss portion 40 forming a part of the post guide 11 and integral with the machine. If it is desired to impart a further shifting movement to the platen and carriage, the shift lever 19 is depressed and this lever ,which carries the bracket 23, will, through the screw 22, force the lever 20 downward, and as the projection 27 is moved away from the rock arms 31, the said arms will be restored to their normal position or that shown in F ig. 1. which will be in alinement with the stops 38. As soon as the posts 12 are moved far enough to permit the ends 36 of the arms 31 to engage the lower ends of the screw stops 38, the carriage and platen will be held against further movement, the said 5 arms being restored to their normal position 46 adapted to engage the recess 43, and a second projection 47 which is adapted to enage the recess 42 of the lever 20 accordlng to which lever is depressed to place the recesses in alinement with the said projections.
While I show a certain form of frame and certain other features of a machine, it will be understood that no claim is made herein specifically to such features, as certain of the parts are covered by separate applications filed by me, the'invention herein referring particularly to the mechanism whereby the carriage and platen may be given a shift movement to ad pt the type bar heads to have a plu tlity of characters. As means are shown for two distinct shifts, each type-bar in this case will have three characters, one for the upper case, one for the lower case, and one for figures or other characters, though the invention is not limited to such an arrangement.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that simple. and positive mechanism is provided for imparting a shifting movement to the platen to adapt the type-bars to have a plurality of characters thereon; that simple mechanism is provided which may be located at one side of the machine and so connected to the carriage support that a uniform movement will be imparted to the platen and carriage and at the same time the movement of the carriage and platen limited and positively stopped at the proper point; that the shift mechanism is so constructed that the movement of the carriage is uniform and positive from both sides of the machine, although the shift key-levers are located on one side only; and that said mechanism is simple in construction and may be readily made and assembled and is accessible for repairs or fo other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on said support, a plurality of pivotally held arms movable with the platen and located on opposite sides of the machine, a stop for each arm, and means for shifting the support and arms to cause said arms to engage the stops.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on said support, a stop, means for shifting the platen, and means having a reciprocatory and a pivotal movement and movable with the platen adapted to engage the stop to limit the movement of the platen.
3.- In a typewriting machine, the combination with a vertically movable support, of a platen mounted on said support, a plu-' rality of pivotally held arms movable with the support, a plurality of stationary stops for each arm of relatively different distances from said arms, and means for shifting the support and platen and causing the arms to engage the stops.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on said support, posts connected to the support, an arm movable With the posts, stops of relatively different lengths, and means for shifting the posts and rocking the arm to cause the same to engage either of the stops.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on said, support, posts connected to the support, arms movable with the posts and located on opposite sides of the machine, stops of relatively different lengths arranged in pairs and located on opposite sides of the machine in alinement with the arms, and means for shifting the posts and rocking the arms to cause the same to engage either of the stops and to impart different shift movements to the platen according to which stops are engaged by the arms.
-7. In typewriting machine, the combination of a support, a platen .mounted on said support, and means having distinct movements in difi'erent directions transversely of each other and located on opposite sides of the machine for limiting the shift movement of the platen.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support, a platen mounted on said support, and means having a pivotal rocking movement and a bodily movement transversely of the rocking movement and located on opposite sides of the machine for limiting the shift movement of the platen.
9. In a typevvriting machine, the combination with a vertically movable support, of a platen mounted on said support, a plurality of pivotally held arms located on opposite sides of the machine and movable with the platen, stationary means located at relatively different distances from the arms and adapted to engage the arms to limit the shift movement of the platen, and means located on the same side of the machine for shifting the support and platen.
10. In a typewriting machine,- the combination with a vertically movable support, of a platen mounted on said support, vertically movable posts connected to the support, a rod connecting the posts together, arms pivotally held to the rod on opposite sides of the machine, means for connecting the arms together, stops of relatively different lengths arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the machine, and levers located on the same side of the machine for shifting the posts and rocln'ng the arms to cause the same to engage the stops.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination With a movable support, of a platen mounted on said support, posts connected to the support, arms held to the rod, a spring normally forcing the arms in one direction, adjustable stops of relatively different lengths, and levers located on the same side of the machine for shifting the posts and rocking the arms to cause the same to engage the stops.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a frame, of a plurality of vertically movable posts guided in the frame, a support carried by the posts, a platen mounted on the support, two adjustable stops of relatively different lengths held to a part of the frame adjacent to each-of the posts, a rod connecting the'posts together, two arms pivotally held to the rod, means for connecting the arms together, a spring normally forcing the arms in one direction, and shift levers located adjacent to each other on the same side of the machine and adapted to cause the arms to engage either of the stops and thereby impart different shift movements to the platen.
. 13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support, a platen mounted on said support, a plurality of pivotally held and reciprocatory arms movable with the platen, and a plurality of stops for each arm of relatively different distances from said arms and adapted to engage said arms one at a time according to the position of movement between the arms and the stops to limit and vary the extent of shift movement of the platen.
15. In a typewiiting machine, the combination of a sup iiort, a platen mounted on said support, an arm having a pivotal and reciprocatory movement and movable With the platen, and a i lurality of stationary stops for said arm cl relatively difl'erent distances therefrom and adapted to engage said arm one at a time according to the position of the latter.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame, of a plurality of ,vertically movable posts guided in the frame a support carried by the posts, a platen mounted on the support, two adjustable stops of relatively'difierent lengths held to a part of the frame adjacent to the posts, two pivotally held arms movable with the platen, a spring normally forcing the arms in one direction, and shift levers located adjacent to each other on the same side of the machine and adapted to cause the arms to engage either of the stops and thereby impart different shift movements to the platen.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination With a vertically movable support, of a carriage mounted on the support, arms movable with the support, stops ,for the arms, two shiftlevers for moving the suport and arms, a bracket secured to one shift Fever and engaging the other, a rod to which the shift levers are connected, and means for limiting the shift movement of the arms.
18. In a 'typewriting machine, the combination with a vertically movable support, of a carriage mounted on the support, arms movable vertically with the support, stops for the arms, two shift levers located on the engaging the other lever, a rod to which the shift levers are connected, and means for limiting the shift movement of the arms.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on the support, a vertically and bodily movable arm having a cam portion, shift levers one of which has a part adapted to engage the cam portion of the arm, and means for limiting the movement of the arm and thereby the shift movement of the platen.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on the support, post-s connected to the support, vertically movable and rocking arms, a transversely-extending rod, two shift levers held to the rod and connected to move the posts and plated, a projection on one of said levers adapted to engage one of the arms to rock the same, and screws forming stops adapted to engage the arms to limit their vertical movement.
