Be it known that I, O'r'ro PETERMANN, a Citizen of v.the Republic of Switzerland, `and a resident of New York, county and State of New York. have` invented certain new. and useful'lmprovements in Platen-Shifts for Typo-iVi-iting.Machines, of which the following is a `full, clear, and enact description.
This invention relates more particularly to platen'shit'ts of foldable front strike orA visible typewriting machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and eliieient typewriting machine in which the platencarriage and other parts may be mounted upon a support and the platen carriage and support as wellas the parts mounted thereon positively moved to ditferent'elevatins to Vadapt'the type heads tohave a plurality of characters thereon,
and wh'ch` support is-so constructed that the pla n carriage in addition to its shift movements may be folded forward over the keyboard to make' the machine compact when not in use to adapt the same for transportation and foi-other purposes.
Another object of the invention is to pro- Jvide simple and efficient means whereby the carriage and support .with the mechanism arranged thereon may be locked in any ol .the shifted positions of said carriage.
'A further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient lever mechanism in which the shift levers may be lo Icated on the same side of the machine, and which levers are so connected and cooperate in such a way that the platen may be elevated the propel' distance forthe engagement ot' the type with'l the work;
With these vand other objects view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accbmpanying drawings, which ferm L part of'tlis specification, and rwill then be pointed out' in the claims at the end of the description.

The machine is provided .with a platen 13, and a carriage 14 for the platen "which is suitably mounted to move along aframe or support 15. The work may be guided about the platen, and the platen operated `for letter and line spacing in any desired manner. J
To raise the carriage and platen to dili'er- `ent elevations to adapt the type heads'to shift levers are provided, one forthe upper case and one for the figures, `which are adapted to elevate the carriageand its support` 15. The lever 16 is for the gures and is intended to give' the greatest elevation to the carriage and support or frame 15. This lever 16 has the usual finger piece, and is held to a transversely-extending rock shaft 17, which is pivotally held to the lsides of the machine frame, the inner end of said lever beine connected to the lower end of a slide 18. There is a slide 18El on the opposite side of the machine and this slide is connected to an arm 18b extending from the shaft 17 to cause both slides to move in unison. These slides 18and 18n form a frame and are held to move vertically. in the brackets 10 located'in the rear corners of the machine frame, and said slides may be made from sheet metal or may be made from a rod or bar, and are angularly formed so as to provide extensions 20 which project forward on opposite sides of the machine toward the key-levers. The support 15 includes arms or brackets 21 which are held to the carriage bed and are pivoted at 22 to the extensions 2O so that thev entire weight of the carriage may rest onthe angular-' slides 18 and 18a of the support 15. The arms 21 with the carriage may be folded over above the fingerparts of the key-levers thus making av very compact machine .for transportation purposes or as a convenient means to yfold the work over so that'iit cannot be read when it is not desired toftake the same out ofthe machine. The lever 16 carries a projection 23 on its inner end through which passes a pin 24; which is adjustably held in said projection and is locked-thereto by the nuts 25 located on opposite sides of the projec tion, and said' pin 24 is adapted to enter an,`
aperture 26 in 'the part 27 of one of the brackets 19. The-lever 28 for the 4upper case or capitals is slotted at-29 to rest upon the rod 17, and is held to the lever 16, at 30,

It will be seen that when the lever 16 is moved downward, the inner endthereof will raise the slides 18 'andv thereby the platen and other mechanism mounted upon the frame 15, and in this position may be locked by the lever 43. -The lever16 gives the greatestvertical throw or elevation to the carriage and. platen, and during vthis,.movement the pin 24 will enter the opening 26 of the bracket 19. It the lever 28 is'inoved downward, a certain amount ot lost motion will take place between said lever and the shift lever 16 so.that the end 34will force the stop 35'to cause the end 38 to close the opening 26 iii the bracket 19, and on further movement of said lever 28 the lever 16 will be carried therewith and the two will move in unison until the pin 24 engages the stop 35., and will thereby prevent further movement of the shift levers. The lever 28 may be locked in this position so that all the key levers depressed will print uppercase letters.
The shift keys 16 and 28 may be assisted in elevating the carriage and support bya spring 48, Fig. 3, which is fastened at one end to the frame, and at its other end is heldto a screw or adjusting device 49 supported in the end of a bracket 50, which bracket is held to the transverse rod or shaft 17` The tendency of the spring 48 is to force the levers downward and carriage and support upward,4 and the tension of the 4spring may be varied bv adjusting th screw 49.4
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and efficient shift mechanism is provided or the carriage, support, and platen;l
that simple means is provided for moving the platen to different elevations and forlocking the same in such positions, and thatv ico 1. In a typewriting machine, the com-" -bination with a vertically movable upperon one side of the machine and adapted to raise the upper portion of the machine to different elevations, and a horizontally movable and pivoted stop normally held against action when one of' the levers is depressed but which is actuated by the other lever to limi-t the movement thereofy and thereby impart relatively different throws to the carl riage and upper portion of the machine.

In a -typeivriting machine, the combination With a vertically'movable upper portion of the machine supporting the carriage, of a vertically movable frame supporting the said upper portion of the machine, and a pair ofy shift levers connected with said vertically movable frame and located on one side of the machine, said levers being adapted to raise the upper portion of the machine to different elevated positions, and being provided with slotted projections, and movable means having projections adapted ro-engage either or both of said levers to hold the upper movable portion of the machine in its elevated positions.

In a typewriting machine, the combinationwith a vertically movable frame mounted in the main frame of the machine, of a frame mounted on said vertically movable frame and supporting the traveling carriage and platen, a rotary transverse shaft mounted in the main frame of the machine, a lever held to-.said shaft and pivoted at its inner end to the vertically movable frame, a second leverA connected to said firstmentioned lever and having a pivot-al connection with said rotary shaft, and alaterally movable stop adapted to be operated by the second lever and moved into position to limit the throw of the first lever.

In a typewriting 'maehine, the combination with a vertically movable frame mounted in the main frame of the machine, of a transverse shaft mounted in themain frame of the machine, a shift lever held to said shaft and held at its in'ner end to the vertically movable frame, a second lever connected to said first-mentioned-lever and having apivotalv connection With said shaft, and a laterally movable stop adapted to be operated by the second lever and moved into position to limit the throvv of the first lever".

In a typewriting machine, the combination of alcarriage, a transversely extending rod,- a 'shift lever fixed to said rod and connected at its inner end to elevate the carriage, a second lever having a pivoted connection on said rod and provided with a loose connection with the first-mentioned lever to have a limited movement independent of said iirst-mentioned lever,al support provided WithV an opening, and a stop plvotally held to said support and adapted to :be engaged by the end of said second lever and adapted to be moved thereby to close the opening in the support.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a transversely extending rod, a shift lever held to said rod and connected at its inner end to elevate the' carriage, a second lever having a pivoted connection on said rod and provided with a loose connection with the first-mentioned' lever to have a` limited movement independent of said first-mentioned lever, a support provided with an opening, a stop pivotally .held to said support and adapted to be engaged by the end of said second lever and adapted to be moved thereby to close the opening in the support, means carried by the irst-mentioned lever and 'adapted' to enter the opening when the first-mentionedl lever is depressed, and means for locking the extent of one shift movement of the "carriage, and an arm connected to the suplocated on the same side of the machine and adapted to move the carriage to dierent elevated positions, a movable and pivoted stop, independent of said levers and operated by one 'of the levers only to limit the vertical movement of the carriage by said lever, and means for locking the shift mechanism in either of the shift positions of the carriage. 1

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on the support, shift levers connected to move the platen, means for limiting the shift movement of the levers and support, each shift-lever having a recessed portion, and a single lock lever having means adapted to engage said recesses to lock either lever in its shifted position.

In a typevvriting machine, the combination Withfa support, of a platen mounted on the support, shift 'levers connected to move the platen, means for limiting the sli-ift movement of the platen and support, each shift-lever having a recessed portion on the under edge thereof, and a single lock lever having spaced projecting parts adapted to engage said recesses tto lock either lever in its shifted movement.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination of. a frame, a movable support, two
shift levers having relatively different movements for adjusting the support to different degrees, the said levers being arranged in close relation and pivotally held adjacent to one side or" the frame, and a pivoted arm adapted to limit the shifting movements of the support according to the position of said arm. e
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a movable support, two relatively movable levers located adjacent to each other and so connected as to have independent movements, and a single element having different positions and actuated by one lever only whereby the levers may shift the support different distances.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a vertically movable support, two relatively movable levers located adj acent -to each other and having a pin-and-slot lconnection so as to have independent movements, and single pivoted means whereby the levers may shift the support to .different distances. v
