The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and' efficient machine in which the platen, carriage, escapement and ribbon mechanism may be moved vertically to adapt each type-head or block to have a plurality of characters thereon, and in which th'e ribbon is given a lateral movement to cover and uncover the printing point, and in such a way that the said ribbon may have different characteristics or a plurality of disprint different colors; and to provide a machine which is so constructed and arranged that the parts referred to may be folded over into compact relation to the keys of the machine tol cause the same to occupy less space than when in use and to adapt the machine for transportation or for other purposes. p
Other objects of the invention are to provide simple means for moving the ribbon lengthwise and laterally each time one of the keys is operated, and-to provide a machine in which the parts are very simple and strong in construction and which may be made very light.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ribbon mechanism which may be In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of oneform of machine embodying the4 invention. This part 5 may be integral with the body portion 6, and the whole lever may be l stamped from sheet metal or other material for strength and cheapness. These-type-bars are each pivoted at 16, Fig. l, in a slotted part of a transversely-extending and curved bracket or bar'17 which'is held to the rear of the machine frame by means of screws 18 or otherwise. Each type-bar at its outer end is provided with -a head or block 19, and each head is provided with a plurality of characters 20, 2l and 22,- the:former indicating the figures, intermediate' onethe upper case, and the third the` lower case.- These type-bars are each vadapted to rest on a felt or other cushioning means 23 which is supported by'al transversely-'extending and curvedy plate or bar 24` suitably sup-I ported at its ends on the machine frame.
Any suitable platen and means for supporting the same may be employed. As shown the platen 25 is of the usual form and is mounted atV its ends to rotate in the frame 26 of a carriage 27. The carriage 27 movesY 30, and the support 28 with grooves 31 on its upper surface opposed to the grooves 30 so as to form a raceway along the opposite are arranged balls 32 forming a bearing for the member 27 of the carriage.
The carriage when released by ,the escapement mechanism, as will be hereinafter described, -is moved forward for letter-spacing by a spring 33 'arranged in a drum 34, Figs. l0 and *11, one end of which is held. to a disk 35 by which the spring may be wound, andthe other end to the drum 34, and both the drum and disk are rotatably supported on a shaft 36 over 'a bracket 37. The diskl 35 is provided with finger' operating parts 38` and to said disk'is ivoted a' pawl`39'. This -pawl 39 is provided) with two teeth 40 and 41, the latter of which is on a handle portion4 42 of said paw1, an'd the teeth are adapted to engage a fixed ratchet wheel 43, by which said disk may be held in an adjusted position and released by a step-by- Step movement as desired. A flexible connection 44 ,is carried by the drum 34 and is held at one end to vsaid drum, and its other endisifastenedv to the carriage so that when the carriage is released, the tension of the spring will force-the same along the bed or support 28.
Various means may be employed for feeding the carriage for letter-spacing and as 'the escapement mechanism therefor. IAs shown the carriage is provided with a rack-bar 45 whichextends lengthwise of the carriage, and meshing with said rack-bar is a pinion 46, Figs. l and 4. This pinion is held to rotate with a shaft 47 which latter is journaled in a bracket located under the carriage bed 28 and projects upward through said bed, and to the lower end of which shaft is held .a ratchet wheel 48. 48 forms a part of the escapement mechanism and is located above the bracket or plate 49 in which one end ofthe shaft 47 is journaled. The ratchet' wheel 48 is heldA to rotate .with-the shaft 47, and 'adapted to engage the ratchet' wheel' is'an Aescapement def vice or lever 50.. This lever or device 50 comprises two parts or members 51 and y52, and carried by the memberor part 52 are vthe pawls 53 and 54, the former of which is xed and the latter pivoted, and said pawls are adapted toengage alternately the teeth of the ratchet wheel -48 to permit said ratchet wheel to rotate with a-step-by.step movement. The carriage is moved in one direction by the spring 33, and the movement of the carriage transmits a rotary movement to the ratchet wheel 48 through the rackbar 45 and pinion 46. The member 52 of the escapement lever is forced in one direction by a spring 55, and said escapement lever is pivoted intermediate the ends thereof at 56 to move horizontally above the bracket 49. Byconstructino' the lever 50 and arranging the .pawls as slown, the said pawls are caused to move directly into and out of engagement .with the ratchet wheel without a sliding movement, thus materially overcoming the wear and effecting a better alinement in letter-spacing. The pawl 54 is pivoted at 57 and isnormally forcedK against a pin 58 by means of a spring 59, and may be limited in its movement by a screw 60 so as to-'be lproperly confined in its' movement between the end of saidscrew and said pin. The member 52 is normally forced by aspring 55.in a directionto cause the pawl 54 t'o engage a -tooth of the ratchet lwheel 48, one end of which spring is fastened'to the bracket 49 and the other end to said member there being a small flat spring-61, Fig. 7,`having its free end extending in the path of said ratchet wheel to prevent the This ratchet wheel same from moving except in one direction. The escapement device4 or lever 50 is curved or circularly formed to partly encompass the ratchet wheel and at its end o posite the pawl 54 is engaged by the end o the member 51 so as to move the member 52 on its pivot. The member 51 has its end 62 projecting in the path of a vertically movable A bar or device 63 to be hereinafter referred to, and as said end 62 is moved it will force the member 52 on its pivot 56. The member 51 is pivoted at 64;, Fig. 8, to the bracket :4:9 and has one end hooked and engaging one end of the' member 52 to shift the latter when moved vertically, the normal position of the end 62 of said member 51 being downward. As will be seen when the. escapement lever is moved, the ratchet wheel, throu h the action of the spring 33 which forces t e carriage in one direction, will rotate the distance of one tooth at each movement of the escapement device or lever 50.
The ribbon has a lengthwise movement imparted thereto by mechanism coperating with the| escapement mechanism. A bevel or crown gear 65 is fixed on the shaft 47 and is adapted to rotate with the ratchet wheel 48, and formed as a part of the bevel gear is a clutch member 66, the teeth of which engage with the clutch member 67. This clutch member 67 ynormally rotates with the pinion 46 and is slidingly held on the hub of said pinion by a key or otherwise. The clutchmember 67 is normally held in engagement with the teeth ofthe clutch member 66 by a spring 67 a which surrounds the hub of the pinion and has one end abutting against the pinion and its other end against the clutch member. 67,- said mechanism 67 being released by mechanism not shown when it is desired that the carriage move freely 'forward along its bed independent of the escapement mechanism and free of any vmovement of the ribbon mechanism. The ribbon mechanism remains inactive-during the backward movement of the carriage owing to the shape of the clutch teeth and the spring 67*L which permits the member 67 to rotate with the pinion in one direction without rotating the clutch member 66 and the crown wheel. A bevel gear or pinion i' G8, rFig. .5, is securedto one end of each of the horizontally arranged shafts 69, one end of which latter are journaled in brackets located on the support or carriage bed, and the other ends are journaled in brackets 70,

Aturthe uppenend each of .the Shafts 36y is a ribbon spool 73, and arranged upon each of said shafts 36 is a thum nut 74 which is adapted to clamp either of the spools so as to be held to its shaft, or to` rotate independently, so that 'by tightening one thumb nut and releasing the other the ribbon may be wound from one spool to the other, for in one case the spool will rotate with the shaft while the other spool will be free to rotate independently of said shaft. A guide 75 is secured to a bracket 76 which projects from the bracket. 37, and said guide 75 is provided with la slot one part of which is open, as at 76?, for the insertion of the. ribbon and through which the ribbon may be passed as it is wound from one spool to the other. The ribbon is made to extend inward adjacent to the .platen At thisA point a vertically movable ribbon guide, member or this guide has two guide members or parts 78 and 79 located on oppositel sides of the printing point of the type and angularly arranged with respect to the vertical plane of said guide. Each guide member of the guide is slotted at 7 9a to receive and hold the ribbon, said slots being open for a part of their length so that the same mav be readily inserted in the slots or removed from said slots.
To reciprocate the ribbon guide or guide support 77 laterally as each key is operated to adapt the machine to use a, polychrome ribbon, and to adapt the ribbon to move out of the way after the printing has been effected in order to allow the writing to be visible-,the guide. 77 is supported to move4 vertically on a bracket or member 80 rojecting outward from the carriage be or support 28. The bracket 80 is slotted, as at 81, at the upper end thereof, and is provided with two outwardly-projecting parts 82 which form a substantially V-shaped opening for the `type-heads or blocks 4to properly guide/each head at the printing polnt for the purpose of securing perfect register. T he guide 77 is slotted at its upper end and is provided with two projections 83 on Aopposite sides thereof which 'engage the edges of the bracket 8O and is adapted to slide vertically thereon. A spring 84, Fig. 2, is secured at one end to the bracket 80, and at its other end to the guide 77` and said spring normally forces the guide down-- sition shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the said bar 63 will engage the projecting part 88 and will move the ribbon a part of its extreme vertical throw so that the type may print from theupper part of the ribbon, and when the member is moved to the position shown in dotted lines, the bar 63 will engage the lower end 87 -of the member 85 and will force the ribbon guide to its eX- treme throw to print from the lower part of the ribbon, the said movement of the member 85 being effected very easily by the operator simply moving the part 87 with his finger. By this means a simple and efficient mechanism is provided for reciprocating or vibrating the ribbon for visible writingvand for. adapting the ribbon to have more than one color thereon, at the same time causing the ribbon to return to the same normal position.
The ribbon mechanism, platen, and carriage may be elevated and may be adapted to be folded over above the keys to make the machine more compact in a shifted or folded position than when in use, and said platen may be operated for line spacing in any desired way. The bracket 89 is fixed to a transverse rod 89a and is arranged to eX- tend` under the vertically movable bar 63, and said bar is normally forced into engagement with the bracket by means of a spring 90. This bar 63 is provided at its lower end with a plurality of teeth 91, which form abutments and are adapted to be engaged to a tooth 92 carried by the lower end 93 of an angular lever or arm 94, the said arm being pivoted at 95 to the transverse bar 8 which supports the key-levers. The part 93 is notched at 96, and engaging the notch is a universal bar 97 which extends trans-Y versely of the machine across and over each of the key-levers and is pivotally held to swing upward and downward. As will be seen when any of the key-levers are de pressed, the universal bar 97 will be operated and this will operate the arm 94, and
finger bar 99, and are each provided with upwardly-,projecting hooked portions 100 which engage the transverse bar'7 and pivotally Asupport said spacing levers, thus the ribbon is properly positioned whatever key or device is operated to move the carriage or the platen.
Two shift levers 101 and 102 are provided for the purpose of elevating the carriage bed, carriage, ribbon mechanism, and the parts mounted upon and movable with the carriage bed to different vertical positions Ato adapt each type-head or block to have three characters. The lever 102 is rigidly held to a transversely-extending rod 89a intermediate its ends and at its inner end is connected to a vertically movable slide 103, there being a slide at each rear end of the machine. The slides are connected to move in unison and are suitably guided in the machine frame. Each slide is substantially L-shaped in form and pivoted at 104 to'the outer ends of said slides are the arms or bars 105 whichpare located on opposite sides of the machine. The bars or arms 105 support the carriage bed, carriage and ribbon mechanism and normally move with the slides when in working position, and said bed, carriage and ribbon mechanism are adapted to be shifted or folded forward over the keys to cause the machine to be more compact and to occupy less spacein such folded position than when in use. The shift lever 101 is held to move independent of the transverse rod 89a and is connected by a screw-and-slot connection, as at 106, to
the shift lever 102 whereby the said lever 101 may have a limited movement independent ofthe lever 102, but on further movement, will, through the lever 102, elevate the slides and support with the parts and mechanism mounted thereon to a degree differing in extent from that of the lever 102, said lever 101 coperating with mecha nism, not shown, to cause the carriage and support to have such movement, said platen shift mechanism being clearlyv shown and claimed in my pending application Sr. No. 501,850,f1ed July 12, 1909.
While I show and describe certain features of the invention other than the ribbon mechanism proper and the parts coperating therewith, such features are not specifically claimed herein as vthey form subject matter of separate applications filed by me under the titles of escapement mechanism, Sr. No. 506,442, filed July 7, 1909; keyboards, Sr. No. 501,853, filed June 12, 1909; and bar mechanism, Sr. No. 501,849, filed June 12, 1909, other features being covered inother pending applications.
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and eiiicient means are provided whereby a ribbon may be moved in either direction, and in which a plurality of colors may be carried by the ribbon to adapt the same to produce writing of different colors; that simple means are provided for shifting .the position of the ribbon bythe movement of the keys; that said ribbon may have its mechanism positively driven by the feed that operates to move the carriage; that simple and efficient supporting means for holding the ribbon at the printing point is provided and Which1 is so constructed as' to be readily moved 'to different distances according to which type of the type-heads l are being used; and that said mechanism is adapted to be moved vertically with the carriage und to be folded With the carriage to make the machine very compact when not in its normal Working position. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent :---l
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a movable carriage, an esca-pement mechanism connected with the carriage and having a lever forming a part thereof, a vertically reciprocating' rib on guide disconnected from and having a part in close relation to the escapement lever, and means for conjointly and directly operating the lever of the escapement mechanism and ribbon guide.
`2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a 'movable carriage, an escapement mechanism connected with the carriage and having a lever forming a part thereof, a vertically reciprocating ribbon guide disconnected from and having a part thereof in close relation to Athe escapement lever, and vertically movable means for conjointly and independently operating the lever of the escapement mechanism and vibrating the ribbon.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a movable carriage, of a rotary escapement mechanism connected with said movable carriage and having a rotary gear Wheel and a lever, rotary spools on which the ends of a ribbon may be Wound, a lWorm gear on the shaft of each of said spools, horizontally arranged rotary shafts, each having a Worm on each shaft constantly in mesh With the gear on one of the spool shafts, a gear heldto the opposite end of each horizontally arranged shaft and constantly in mesh with the first-mentioned gear, and means for operating the lever.

7. In a typewriting machine, the combination With a movable carriage for supporting the platen, of an escapement mechanism connected with the movable carriage, ribbon spools, a vertically reciprocating guide for vibrating the ribbon, said escapement mechanism having a laterally projecting lever disconnected from and having a part thereof located adjacent to the ribbon vibrating mechanism, key-operated levers, and a vertically movable element operated by the key-operated levers and acting directly upon said ribbon guide and the lever of the escapement mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a carriage mounted on said support, feed mechanism for the carriage, ribbon mechanism mounted on the support and'operated from the feed mechanism, a vibratory ribbon guide, a vertically reciprocatory bar adapted to directly -engage a part of and simultaneously operate the feed mechanism and the ribbon guide, a universal bar, ,and connections between the universal bar and the reciprocatory bar whereby on each movement of said universal bar the reciprocatory bar will operate to vibrate the ribbon.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a carriage mounted on said support, feed mechanism for the 4 carriage, ribbon mechanism mounted on the 'support and operated from the feed mechanism, an independent vibratory ribbon guide, a vertically reciprocatory bar adapted to simultaneously operate the feed mechanism and the ribbon guide independently of each other, a universal bar, and connectionsbetween the universal bar and the reciprocatory bar Whereb on each movement of said universal bar t 1e reciprocatory bar will operate to vibrate the ribbon.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a ribbon, means for moving the ribbon adjacent to the platen, a reciprocatory guide engaging the ribbon for vibrating the same, a reciprocatory bar for engaging the ribbon guide and provided with a plurality of teeth, a universal bar, a pivotally held armengaged by the universal bar and having a tooth adapted to engage the teeth of the reciprocatory bar to operate the latter When the universal bar is operated.
11. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, means for moving the ribbon lengthwise adjacent to the platen, a reciprocatory guide engaging the ribbon for vibrating the same laterally to cover and uncover the printing point, a reciprocatory bar for engaging the ribbon guide and provided with a plurality of teeth, a universal bar, a pivotally held arm engaged by the universal bar and having means adapted to engage the teeth of the reciprocatory bar to operate the latter when the universal bar is operated.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of escapement mechanism including a lever, ribbon mechanism including a shiftable member,keylevers, together With a vertically movable bar adapted to simultaneously engage the lever and said member to operate the escapement mechanism and to vibrate the ribbon.

In a'typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage movable into compact relation to another part of the machine to occupy less space than when in use, of escapement mechanism, ribbon `mechanism including a laterally movable member and carried with the carriage in its compact movement, key-operated levers, together with a device cooperating with the levers and adapted to engage said element and a part'of the escapement mechanism to simultaneously operate said latter mechanism and move the ribbon to cover the printing point.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, escapement mechanism, ribbon mechanism including a reciprocatory guide, key-levers together with a vertically movable and independent bar directly engaging said guide and a part of the escapement mechanism to simultaneously operate said escapement mechanism and move the ribbon laterally to cover the printing point.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a platen mounted on said carriage, of an escapement mechanism including a lever, ribbon vibrating mechanism including a vertically movable element, key-levers, and means operatively connected to the key-levers for directly operating the escapement lever and the vertically movable element or' the ribbon mechanism, said means being independent of and separable from the escapement lever and the element of the ribbon mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination With a carriage and a platen mounted on said carriage, of an escapement mechanism, ribbon vibrating mechanism including a vertically movable element, means cooperating with the escapement mechanism to move the ribbon lengthwise, key-levers, and means operatively connected to the keylevers for directly and simultaneously operating the escapement and the vertically movable element of the ribbon mechanism, said means being independent of and separable from said mechanisms. y

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a platen mounted on said carriage and movable forward therewith into compact relation to another part of the machine, of an escapement mechanism, ribbon vibrating mechanism including a two-part member partaking of the compact movement of the carriage, keylevers, and a vertically movable device operatively connected With the key-levers and separable from the ribbon and escapement mechanisms for.A simultaneously operating said escapement mechanism and the vertically movable element of the ribbon mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination With a support, of a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen held in the carriage and movable with the carriage into compact relation toanother part of the machine, ribbon vibrator-y mechanism mounted upon the support and partaking of the compact movement of the carriage, said ribbon mechanism including a vertically movable element, escapement mechanism, means operatively connected with the escapement mechanism for moving the ribbon lengthwise, said mechanism also partaking of the compact movement of the carriage and platen, key-operated levers, and a vertically movable bar connected with said levers and adapted tosimultaneously operate a part of the escapement mechanism and the ribbon mechanism. l

and a vertically movable bar connected to said key-levers and adapted to simultaneously operate a part of the escapement mechanism and the ribbon mechanism.

In a tvpewriting machine, the combination of a support, a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen heldin the carriage and foldable forward with the carriage into overhanging relation to-another part of the machine to occupy less space than when in use, ribbon vibratory mechanism mounted uponthe support and foldable with the carriage, escapement mechanism, means for moving the ribbon lengthwise, said lmechanism partaking of the compact movement of the carriage and platen, key-levers, and a vertically movable bar operatively connected to said key-levers and adapted to simultaneously operate a part of v the escapement mechanism and the ribbon mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the c ombination of a support, a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen held in the carriage and movable forward with the carriage into compact relation to another part of the machine, ribbon vibratory mechanism mounted upon the support and partaking of the forward movement of the carriage, escapement mechanism, key-levers, and a vertically movable bar connected to said key-levers and adapted to simultaneously operate a part of the escapement mechanism and the ribbon mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a support for said carriage, a platen mounted on the carriage and movable with the carriage into compact relation to another part of the machine, ribbon vibrating mechanism partaking of the compact movement of the carriage, mechanism for moving the ribbon lengthwise, also partaking of the compact movement, escapement mechanism serving as a means to operate the mechanism for moving the ribbon lengthwise, key-operated levers, and a vertically movable element coperating with said levers and adapted to simultaneously operate the ribbon mechanisms and the escapement mechanism as each keyoperated lever is depressed.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a support for said carriage, a platen mounted on the carriage and movable forward with the carriage and support into compact relation to another part of the machine to occupy less space than when i-n use, ribbon vibrating mechanism partaking of the compact movement of the carriage, key-operated levers, and a reciprocatory element separable from the ribbon mechanism and remaining in coperation with said levers and adapted to operate a part of the ribbon vibratory mechanisms to cause the ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point.

In a .typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a vertically movable supportfor said carriage, a platen mounted on the carriage and movable forward with the carriage and support into compact relation to another part of the machine to occupy less space than when in use, ribbon vibrating mechanism partaking of the compact movement of the carriage and support, mechanism for moving the ribbon length'- wise, key-operated levers, and a vertically movable bar movable vertically with the platen and coperating with said levers and having a movement independent of the vertical shift movement of said bar and adapted to operate the ribbon vibrating mechanism.

In atypewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a support for said carriage, a platen mounted on the carriage andl movable with the carriage into compact relation to another part of the machine to occupy less space than when in use,.platen shift mechanism for moving the carriage and platen vertically, ribbon vibrating mechanism partaking of the compact movement of the carriage, key-operated levers, means for moving the ribbon lengthwise, and a bare forming a part of the ribbon mechanism having a vertical movement through the platen shift mechanism and maintained in a fixed relative position to the platen, said bar coperating with said levers and having a movement thereby independent of its movement through the platen shift mechanism to operate the vibrating mechanism for moving the ribbon laterally.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a support for said carriage, a platen mounted on the carriage, platen shift mechanism, ribbon vibratory mechanism, key-operated levers, and a vertically movable bar having a vertical movement through the platen shift mechanism and maintained in a fixed relative position to the platen, said bar coperating with said levers and having a movement thereby independent of its movement through the platen shift mechanism to operate by impact the rest of the ribbon vibrating mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a support for said carriage, a platen mounted on the carriage, platen shift mechanism for moving the carriage and platen vertically, ribbon vibrating mechanism for moving the ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point, and a reciprocatory element having a movement through the platen shift mechanism and maintained in a Xed relative position to the platen, and key-operated levers, said element coperating with said levers and having a movement thereby independent of its movement through the platen shift mechanism to operate by impact the rest of the ribbon vibrating mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support, a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen held to rotate with the carriage, means for imparting a lengthwise movement to the ribbon, a vertically movable ribbon element adapted to engage the ribbon and to move the same laterally of the platen to cover and uncover the printing point and adapted always to return to the same normal position below the printing point, a bracket along which said ribbon element 'is adapted to slide, a member pivotally held to the ribbon element and having two engaging parts arranged one above the other, a spring normally forcing the ribbon element downward, key-operated levers, and a vertically reciprocatory bar coperating with said key-operated levers and adapted to engage the engaging parts of said member to vary the lateral throw thereof.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage bed, a support therefor, a carriage adapted to move along said bed, a platen mounted in the carriage and movable with the bed and carriage into compact relation to another part of the machine, mechanism for moving a ribbon lengthwise thereof, ribbon vibrating mechanism adapted to move the ribbon laterally to cover and uncover the printing point, all of which partake -of the compact movement of the carriage and bed, key-operated levers, a. vertically movable bar adapted to assume differy ent positions, and means operatively connected to the key-operated levers whereby said bar may be moved to operate the ribbon vibrating mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage bed, a support therefor, a carriage adapted to move along said bed, a platen mounted in the carriage, mechanism for moving a ribbon lengthwise thereof, ribbon vibrating mechanism adapted to move the ribbon laterally to cover and uncover the printing point, key-operated levers, a vertically movable bar adapted to assume different positions, and means operatively connected to the key-operated levers whereby said bar may be moved to operate the ribbon vibrating mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage bed, a support therefor, a carriage adapted to move along said bed, a platen mounted in the carriage and movable forward with the bed and carriage into compact relation to the keys of the machine, mechanism for moving a ribbon lengthwise thereof, ribbon vibrating mechanism adapted to move the ribbon laterally to, cover and uncover the printing point, all of which partake of the forward movement of the carriage and bed, key-operated levers, a vertically movable bar adapted to assume different positions, and means operatively conadapted to be held to said shaft or to be re-l leased therefrom, a worm gear mounted on each shaft, worms meshing with said worm ears, angularly arranged shafts to which t e worms are secured, a crown wheel mounted on the shaft, a clutch mechanism coperating with said crown wheel, means whereby the clutch mechanism may be released to disengage the crown wheel from coperation with the escapement mechanism,
gears arranged on the shafts to constantly mesh with the crown wheel whereby either one of the ribbon spools may be rotated to move the ribbon lengthwise thereof, keylevers, and means coperating with the keylevers for operating the escapement mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage support, of a carriage adapted to move along said support, a platen mounted in the carriage, escapement mechanism including a rotary shaft, ribbon spools mounted on the support and located on opposite sides of the machine, a shaft on which the spools are mounted and adapted to be held to said shaft or to be released therefrom, a worm gear mounted on each shaft, worms meshing with said worm gears, horizontal and angularly arranged shafts to which the worms are secured, a crown wheel mounted on the shaft, a clutch mechanism coperating with said crown wheel, means whereby the clutch mechanism may be released to disengage the crown wheel from cooperation with the escapement mechanism, gears arranged on the horizontal shafts to mesh With the crown Wheel whereby either one of the ribbon spools may be rotated to move the ribbon lengthwise thereof, keylevers, and means cooperating with the keylevers for operating the escapement mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a carriage adapted to move along said support, escapement mechanism, spools located at opposite vsides of the machine about Which the ribbon is adapted to pass, shafts to Which said spools are adapted to be held, means for locking or releasing the spool on either of sald shafts, a spring held drum arranged upon 15 one of the shafts, and means connecting said drum to the carriage whereby the latter may W.
