FILE AND BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application filed February 19, 1914. Serial No. 819,609.
To uZZ vii/loin it may C(Ht /"IZ lie it known that I, Jens T. Tom), a citizen of the l nited btates, residing at Springfield, in the county of bangainon and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and l. eful improvements in Files and Binders, or which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in files and binders, particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in its use for filing corres vondence, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character, constructed from a single sheet of material. and cut in a single operation, and then folded so that a portion of the blank will serv e as a reinforce for the fold of the file. thereby adding strength and durability to the file, while another portion of the blank is folded to form one or more inclosed tabs, to or between which, the correspondence may be removably secured.
A. further object is to provide an improved device of this character having a back or edge which will open to accommodate the growth of the contents of the file.
A. further bject is to provide an improved device of this character, having 'iastening devices for the corres ondence, disposed entirely within the covers and also having a flap connected with one of the covers, and which fiap serves as a closure for the open edge of the file, to protect the edges of the papers.
To the attainment of these ends, and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and armngcinent of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file of this character, constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, and as showing the bottom of the file. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the blank, from which the file is cut. and showing the manner of cutting and scoring the blank. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. 1 showing the position the parts will assume when a few papers are secured in the file. Fig. at is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the position the parts will assume when the file is expanded and a number of papers are secured therein. Fig. is a detail perspective view showing the manner of folding the blank shown in Fig. Fig. ('3 is a sectional view taken on line ii-6, Fig. l. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. l of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 8 's a. detail perspective view of a portion of the blank from which the file shown in Fig. i" is constructed, and showing the manner of eating and scoring the blank. Fig. 9 is a section of a portion of Fig. 7, and on line 9 .l. Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view showing the manner of folding the blank shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 11 is a detail perspective view of the file shown in Fig. 7, with the file open.
Referring more pziirticularly to the drawings, and in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the numeral designates a portion of a blank from which the file is constructed, and which blank may be constructed of any suitable material, such as tough paper or the like, and may be of any lt ired sire and configuration. The blank is out intermediate its ends along the lines 16, 17 and also the lines 18, 19 as well as the lines 20, 21 and 22, 53 to form the tabs or cars 24', 25 adjacent the edges of the blank and the cuts 18 and 20 will result in the formation of connecting portions 26 extending between one of the covers of the file and the portion 27, which forms the back of the file, while the cuts 19 and form the connecting portions 528 between the other cover of the file and the back 27. The respective cuts 18 and 20 extend from the cuts 16 and and preferably converge toward each other and away from the cut 16, while the cuts 19 and 21 also preferably converge toward each other and away from the cut17. lVhile these various cuts are being made in the blank, the blank is also scored along the lines 29, 30, 31, and for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
If desired and while the blank is being cut and scored, it may also be perforated to form the apertures 35, 37, being formed through the respective connecting portions 26, 28, while the apertures 34, 86 are formed through the body of the blank, respectively adjacent the apertures 35, 37. Slots 38, 39 may also be formed in the blank, respectively adjacent the apertures 34 and 36.
These cuts and perforations, together with the scoring of the blank, are arranged intermediate the extremities of the blank and in such a manner that the portion 40 (see particularly Fig. 1) which forms the bottom of the file, is somewhat shorter than the portion 41 forming the top of the file, so that the extremity 42 of the top of the file, which projects beyond the edge of the bottom of th file, may be folded to form a flap to lap over the back of the file for the purpose of protecting the edges of the papers.
The blank thus cut, scored and perforated, ma be folded in any desired or suitable manner but preferably as follows: The outer face of the top of the file may be placed upon a support and the remaining portion of the blank then raised s0 that a portion of the back along the cuts 17 and 23 may be passed over the portion 43 and also over the ears 25, the connecting portions 28 during such folding operation folding on the lines 44, and being temporarily folded over and against the inner face of the top 41 of the file. The back 27 is then folded on the lines 27 and the bottom of the file 40 is then again folded, so as to pass over the portion 45 of the back and over the ears 24, so that the connecting portions 26 will fold along the lines 46. Thi will cause the ears 24 to rest fiat against the ears 25, and the portion 43 of the then upper face of the top 41 to rest flat against the lower face of the portion 45 of the back. The bottom of the file is then turned backwardly and along the lines 47 so as to extend over the portions 26 and the portions 43 and. 45', and finally the bottom 40 is folded along the line 29. This will form two tabs designated generally by the reference numeral 48 in Figs. 3 and 6, which are arranged between the covers of the file and substantiall parallel with each other. The parts thus folded may be secured together in any suitable manner, and the back 27 is creased along the lines 31, 32, so as to form a back which will be expansi' ble to accommodate the growth of the contents of the file. When the blank is thus folded and the parts fastened together, the apertures 34, 35, 36 and 37 will register with each other so that a fastening device 49 may be passed therethrough and through the correspondence to secure the correspondence between the tabs 48. As shown this fasten ing device 49 is preferably in the form of a metallic strip, the bottom of which is arranged between the tabs 48 and the extremities 50 thereof pass through the registering apertures and then through slots in the tabs such as slots 38 or 39 to protect the ends of the fasteners, while the body portion of the fastener will pass through the other slots 38, or 39 for holding it against displacement. It will thus be manifest that not only an expansible file is produced, but one in which the fold or joint will be reinforced, thereby adding to the strength and durability of the file.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 to 11, there is provided only a single tab within the file covers, and is particularly adapted for light correspondence. In this form of the invention, the blank 51 is cut in a similar manner along the lines 52, and also along the lines to form the connecting portions 56, the ears 57 and the portion 58. It is also scored along the lines 59, 60 and 61. The blank thus cut and scored may be folded by preferably placing the top 62 of the file upon a support and then folding the blank so that the connecting portions 56 will fold along their respective portions of the line 61 and until the connectin portions 56 rest fiat against the face of the top 62 as shown clearly in Fig. 10. This will cause the bottom 63 of the file to be folded over away from the portions 58 and the cars 57 of the top. The bottom is then folded along the lines 60. backwardly over the portion 58 and ears and the bottom is then again folded forwardly along the line 59. The portions 57, 58 may be then folded along the line 61 so that they will lap over the outer face of the bottom of the file as shown in Fig. 7, the portions 57 and 58 being secured to the exposed face of the bottom of the file in anv suitable manner. This manner of folding the blank will result in the formation of a projecting tab inside 01 the file, which is formed by the portion 64 of the blank and the connecting portions If desired, suitable fastening devices such as eyelets 65' may be provided for securing the portions 64, 65 together, and fastening devices 66 may be provided which pass through the eyelets and which latter fastening devices serve as means for securing the correspondence in the file. The cover 62 is also preferably provided with an extending portion 67 which forms a flap adapted to fold over the free end of the bottom 63 for protecting the papers. Thus it will be manifest that with this improved structure, letters will be secured within the file and in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the back will expand to accommodate the growth of the contents, and in both forms, the fold of the file will be reinforced to increase the durability, and the fastening devices which secure the correspondence within the file will be completely housed within the file, so that there will be no projecting portions of the fastening devices to catch on other files or papers, thereby presenting smooth outside surfaces to the file.
While the preferred forms of the invention have been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction,
in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, and in the manner of cutting and folding the file, as well as in the fastening devices and in the manner of securing them in position, Within the scope of the claims, and without departing from the spirit of this invention.
