It will be understood by those skilled in the art that in frame buildings as well as in brick buildings using floor joists, metal strap hangers are used to support the joists at the ends thereof. T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LORENZ Scmxrrnn, a citizen of the United States, reslding at San Francisco, in the county of San Franthose skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relatesto a bending machine for the production of joist hangers. It will be understood by those skilled in the art that in frame buildings as well as in brick buildings using floor joists, metal strap hangers are used to support the joists at the ends thereof. These hangers are com monly flat pieces of metal having their ends twisted in an angle of about 90 from the body of the strap, said ends being secured to the brick wall supportingthe joist, or to a suitable heavy stringer from which a number of joists are supported.
The hanger is shown in Figures 9 and 10 as it appears after being bent in this machine, further steps being necessary to make the complete hanger, but which steps and the machine for taking them, form no part of the invention.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Fig. l is a front elevation of the bending machine, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the bending machine, Fig. 3 is a plan View of the machine, Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the bending machine showing a plate in place and ready to be bent, Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the bending machine showing the plate after it has been bent. Fig. 6 is an elevation of one of the bending members looking in the opposite direction from Fig. 4:. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the plate in the bent position as illustrated in Fig. 5, Fig. 8 is a view of one of the catches used to hold the plates in position when ready to be bent, and Figs. 9 and 10 are views of the plate after the same has been bent.
The machine is mounted upon a suitably heavy base plate 1 to which the several parts of the machine are suitably bolted. The machine comprises a right hand portion A and a left hand portion B, the object being to produce revers'ely placed bends in a fiat plate and in order to provide for spac- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing these bends apart different distances, the base plate is provided with slots 2 so that the member B may be shifted in position as it becomes necessary for the spacing of the bends of the plate to be operated upon.
Since the two portions of the machine A and B are substantially identical, save that they are right and left, thedescription will refer to but one of them.
The numeral 3 represents an upstanding bracket secured to the base plate 1 by means of bolts 4, said bracket having an opening therein as indicated at 5 for the insertion of the plate to be bent and being bored out large enough to receive the boss 6 of the gear 7. This gear has a slot 8 therein as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7 and it has a wear plate 9 secured thereon, which also has a projecting lug at 10 to hold the plate 11 to be bent from going out of the proper position when the bend is to be made.
Extending rearwardly the bracket 3 has a bearing at 12 for a shaft 13. This shaft is in practice made of such length as may be deemed necessary to carry out all the desired bending operations the bracket B being movable in said shaft and on the plate 1 to vary the distance between it and the bracket A.
Loosely mounted on the shaft 13 are two segmental gears 14, said gears each having a flange at 15 to retain the gear 7 in place and a socket at 16 for the insertion of an operating handle 17.
At the side of each member A and B there is an L shaped plate 18 secured to the plate 1 by means of bolts 19. The plate 18 has two vertical slots 20 in which projecting lugs 21 are adjustably secured. The lugs 21 pivotally carry a plate 22 which plate has two vertical slots 23 therein for adjusting the position of a plate 24: which prevents the plate 11 in process of being bent, from getting out of the proper position.
Since the plate 22 is hingedto the L shaped plate 18, means must be provided to hold it in contact with the plate 18 and to thereby hold the plate 11 in process of being bent in position. This means comprises a latch 26, said latch having a portion 27 pivotally connected with the plate 22 and having screw threads at 28 to adjust its length.
In operation the two members A and B are turned to the position indicated in Fig.
4, the latches 26 are then raised and the plate 11 is dropped down into place, Whereupon the latches 26 are closed as indicated in Fig. 4 and the handles 17 are both depressed and the gears 6 are turned in the position shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the late will be bent rs indicated in said figure.
WVhile the twisting is taking place, the plates 9 and the short bearings 2i prevent the plate being bent from being pulled out of its proper )osition. After the plates have been suita ly bent, the doors or gates 22 are released and the bent plate may be removed from themachine. The segment gears to which the handles are applied are split as indicated at 29 in order that they be drawn up tightly on the shaft by means 7 of the bolt 30, this being. necessary in order to make said segment gears readily adjustable along said shaft.
