KING, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 112,052, dated February 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN DUMPlNG-CARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, SIDNEY 1). K1ne, of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Dumping-Oars; andI do hereby declare that the following is a.fu1l, clear,. and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
. Figure 1 of the drawings isa representation of m invention in longitudinal vertical section Figure 2 is a bottom view of the dumping-box and platform on which it slides; and
Figure 3 is a plan View of the turn-table.
The nature ofmy invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a dumping-car, which moves past the center to dump, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed toidescribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing.
A represents the bed ofan ordinary railroad-car, or an additional bed placed at each end of such car.
On this bed A is mounted a turn-table,13,con-
. structed in any of the known and usual .ways, and
provided on its upper side with two inclined ways 0, in grooves upon which the platform D moves, said platform being on its under side provided with roll ers a a.
These rollers move in the inclined grooves in the ways 0 O. Y
The platform D is held in proper place by means of a spring-hook, l), secured on its under side, and which catches on a projection, 11, on the upper side of the turn-table.
The hook b is released fromthis projection, or, in other words, the platform is unlatched by means of a lever, f, pivoted to a short standard'on the upper side of the platform, the end of said lever being, by a rod or chain, connected with the spring-hook b."
As soon as the hook I: is released the platform D passes down the inclined planes 0 0 until its front end strikes a stop, e, at the edge of the turn-table.
Upon the platform I) is a beam, E, to which the box G is hinged, this beam and box being so arranged that the box is hinged at or near its center, and the beam will pass directly over the center of the turntable, when the platform is held in its proper place.
The box G, when in proper position, rests upon a support, H, on the platform, and is held by a latch, g, projecting from its under side and passing through a hole in the platform, where it is caught and held by a spring-bar, 7r.
One end of this spring-bar is attached to a bar, 7a, which passes forward in one or more guides on the under side of the platform, and projects beyond the front end of the platform.
hen the platform D has, been unlatched, as above described, and passes down the inclined planes G C, so that the box willpass beyond the center, the end of the bar It strikes the stop e, which releases the latch g, and the box dumps.v
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- -1. The inclined planes 0 G, in combination with the platform D, rollers a a, and box G, arranged as described, so that the box will move forward and dump itself, substantially as set forth.
2 The arrangement, with the platform D, of the spring-hook b and lever f, operating with the projection (I on the turn-table, as and for the purposes here- .in set forth.
3. In combination with the platform I) the latch g, spring-bar h, bar It, and stop 0, arranged as described, and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the turn-table B, inclined planes 0 0, platform D, and box G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' SIDNEY D. KING.
