Description
v H. J. HANCOCK.
Sgwing- Machine NeedIeGuard. No. 112,033. Patented Feb. 21, 1871.
N-PETERS, PNOTO-LYTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
HENRY J. HANCOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN HOLDERS FOR NEEDLES IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [12,033, dated February 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. HANCOCK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of a sewingmachine, in part, constructed in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2, a partiallyseotional longitudinal view of the same; Fig. 3, a horizontal or transverse section through the needle bar and clamp used to hold the needle on the bar; Fig. 4, a front view of the shuttlecarrier, with a device attached to facilitate the removal of the shuttle from the carrier when required, and Fig. 5a horizontal section through the line a: a; in Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponning parts.
My invention is applicable to both single and double thread sewing-machines; and it consists in a novel construction of guard for holding the needle, so that by only slightly easing or releasing a single screw the needle may be removed from its bar without detaching the guard, and by further easingsaid screw the guard itself may be removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the cloth bed or table of a shuttle sewing-machine, and B a feed-wheel arranged to project therethrough, as usual, and receiving an intermittent rotary motion by the ordinary or any suitable means.
The needle d is held on or in a groove, 8, in the side of the needle-bar F by means of a guard, G, constructed to clip the sides of said bar, and made to fit or slip over from below a pin or projectioinf, at the bottom of the bar, and onwhich 'it is free to slightly move or turn by the slotinthe guard, which establishes the clip of the needle-bar, being made rather more roomy than is necessary to receive the needle'bar through it. Said guard is locked on the needle-bar to clamp or hold the needle in the groove 8 by means of a set-screw, g, ar ranged to pass through the side of the guard and to enter at its point arecessin the side of the bar, so that by slightly easing said screw the guard is capable of being swung sulficiently on the projection f as a center to allow of the withdrawal of the needle and reinsertion of it or a fresh one without removing the guard G, which, however, when necessary, may be readily detached by simply giving the screw 9 a further releasing-turn to withdraw its point from the recess in the side of the bar. By these means the one screw is made to hold both the guard and the needle to their respective places relatively with the needle-bar and separate provisions made for insertion or removal of the needle without disturbance or re" moval of the guard.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
The needle-guard G, constructed essentially as described, in combination with the needle bar F, the pin or projection f, and the setscrew g, arranged to lock with the needle-bar, as described.
HENRY J. HANCOCK.
