SHOVEL ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Dec. 1, 1914..
Application filedJ'anuary 2, 1914. Serial No. 810,073.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowdoin, in the county of Valley and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingv had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful,
improvements in a shoe sole protector and the object in View is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature which may be easily and quickly applied to the handle and inner end of a. shovel and affording a wider bearing for a shoe than the thin edge of the spade or shovel.
The invention consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature, made of a sin gle piece of metal and adapted to clamp the handle of the shovel and provided with integral lugs for engagement with the shovel.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention to ashovel. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the blank before being bent to the form shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the blank bent in readiness to be applied to the shovel.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a shovel and B a handle thereto.
C designates a resilient strap having apertures D near the ends thereof and said strap is designed to be bent along the scored lines E to positions which will be parallel to each other when the strap is placed about the handle in the manner shown in Fig. 1. A bolt F is passed through said registering apertures and, by screwing a nut upon the threaded end of the bolt, the ends of the strap may be drawn toward each other and said strap held securely by friction to the handle.
Projecting laterally from the strap are extensions H which, when the device is in readiness to be applied to the shovel, are bent along the scored lines I to positions at right angles to the face of the strap and form broad bearings for the sole of a shoe. Said extensions H have slits N formed therein in alinement with each other and the portions intermediate the slits and the ends of the extensions are adapted to bebent at right angles along the scored lines 0, forminglugs K designed to engage the ends of the opposite inclined portions A of the shovel. sions are slightly curved longitudinally in order to compensate for the beveled sides of the shovel so that the lugs will properly engage frictionally the ends thereof, while the strap holds the under faces of the extensions against the end of the shovel.
By the provision of a device embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and efficient means is provided whereby the sole of the shoe worn by a person using the shovel may rest upon the extensions and form a wider bearing when it is desired to push the shovel into the material to be lifted by the shovel.
What I claim to be new is 1. A shovel attachment made of a single piece of metal. comprising a resilient strap, the ends of which are bent parallel to each other and apertured for the reception of a bolt, said strap having integral wings at positions diametrically opposite, and means at the ends of said wings for engagement over the upper edge of a shovel, as set forth.
2. A shovel attachment made of a single piece of metal, comprising aresilient strap, the ends of which are bent parallel to each other" and apertnred for the reception of a bolt, saidstrap having integral wings at positions diametrically opposite, the ends of said wings being bent to form lugs for engagement over the upper edge of the shovel, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM T. HUNT.
