To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUsT Bumm a subject of the King of Greece, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Machines for Cleaning Win ows and Walls; and I do declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description o the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for cleaning window's and interior walls.
The object of the invention is to provide a window and wall-cleanin machine through means of which the worl of cleaning windows and walls is greatly facilitated, and the danger attending the work of cleaning the outsides of win ows of oiiice buildings is avoided.
To the above ends, the machine is adjustable and consists in the main of a series of extensible members, telescoping one within the other and constitutin a brush-supportin arm. The brush which ma be of anv suitable forni is connected to a exible shaft and is rotatable through suitable gearing which in turn is set in motion by a crankdriven shaft.
The details of the invention will appear from the description to follow and the accompanying drawings to be considered therewith.
Referring to said drawings in general terms, Figure 1 is anelevation of my improved window-cleaning machine, parts of the extensible brush-supporting arm being broken out to bring the illustration within prescribed limits. In this view a section of the window-sill and wall of a building is shown, as well as a sectional view of a portion of a window. Fig. 2 is a sectionalv elevation of a portion of the machine on a larger scale and looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. A portion of the telesco ic or extensible brush-supporting arm is bro en oil' to facilitate illustration. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the frame or gear box and the gearing through which movement is imparted to the brush, the band-wheel and clutch. Throughout the description to follow, and the accom anying drawings which have been thus brie y referred to, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
At the beginning it should be stated that the form of supporting means for the machine ma vary according to the work to be done. en used for interior wall-cleaning, the clamping means, such as is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5, would of necessity be dispensed with and the frame 1 of the machine supported on any suitable form of base, or the lower surface 2 of the base may engage the floor directly. it will be understood that the machine is manipulated by one hand graspin the expansible brush-holding arm, while t c other hand rotates the crank. The expansible brush-holding arni consist-s of an outer casing consistingr of a suitable number of telescoping sections, fitting one within the other and being extensible or contractible by means presently described. The lowermost section 8, is rigidly attached to the frame or gear box, which. it will be observed, is open. The telescoping outer casing thus made up of the members 3, 4 and 5 is stationary as to rotary movement. W'ithin this casing is arranged the expansible brush-supporting arm made up of a series of tubular telesci ng members-6, 7 and 8, the number of ..icli may vary according to the length required. These inner sections G, 7 and 8 have a splined connection one with the other so as to cause one section to rotate the other. per end oi the innermost section 8 et the entensible arm by means ot a tienible shaft consisting ot a stem 12 which is detachably secured. Within said section 8 by means of a pin 13 on the stem which lits in notches 1t in the end ot section 8. Secured to the stem 12 is a spring 15 the upper end of which is tilted to a tube 16 which is contracted to receive the stem 1i' of the brush, said stem having a detachable pin and slot connection with the tube 16. The flexible brush support thus described lies Within a goose-neck which is a continuation oit the upper section 5 oiz the outer casing. Reverting to the shailt 9, Fig. 2, the lower end thereot has upon it a pinion 18 which engages a crowngear 19 lined to the drivingshatt 20 journaled in the gear bon or trame 1.. The shaft 20 is supported at three points in said trame as is apparent trom lFig. 1 and has a crank or handle 21... lt ivill be apparent that a rotation ot the cranlr 21 results in rotating the brush through the connections specified.
Fllhe enpansible casing and tubular arm consisting, as before specified, ol' the mein bers 3, li, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 16, is manipulated by means or a metallic band 22 one end of Which is slidably maintained in engagement with the outer side of the casing by passing through a suitable number et guides .or lreepers 23 and the other end of which is secured to the upper section 5 of thecasing. As is shown in lig. 2, the said band passes through a guide 2t which is suspended Jrrom the bearing 10 and thence through a guide slot 25 in said bearing. A. band-Wheel 26 runs loose on the shaft 20, the periphery of which is provided with a suitable number ot teeth .27 which enter corresponding" openings 28 in the band 22. lt `will be understood that the band is snugly conducted through the guides and between the surfaces ot the casing and therefore has no chance to buckle in the operations thereof in elevating or lowering the casing sections and the brushsupporting arm sections. lln Fig. 't' is shown one simple manner of uniting the band to the upper section 5 oi the casing. llhe bandwheel 26 is provided with lateral clutch parts 29 (see Fig. 3). Adapted to engage therewith is a clutch ,member 30 splined to the driving shalt 201, such engagement is effected when it Iis desired to extend or Withdraw the casing members 3, d, 5 and the brush-supporting members 6, 7 and 8. As is shown in llig. 3, the clutch members are disengaged and the band-Wheel is locked against rotation. Such a condition is obtained by means ot a dog 31, which is norf mally controlled by a spring 32. When the clutch members are disengaged, as in Fig. 3, the clutch member 30 controls the spring 32. The clutch members are normally separated by the spring 33, and said clutch is U5 operated from a shitting rod 3d which is coupled to a rod extending to and connected with a grip-lever 35'. 'lhis griplever 35 is pivoted to an upright handle 36. T he implement or machine is manipulated by one hand grasping this handle and is thereby changed in its position to move the brush over the `Wall or Window, While the other hand ot the operator turns the crank 21.
ln Fig. 1 the brush is4 illustrated in engagement vvith a Window 37. 'llhe machine is there shown to be mounted on a Winden# sill 38 by means of a suitable clamp 39 Which is manipulated by an adjusting device d0. A. central member or round support d1 is a feature ot the clamp. As shown in lBig. 2, this round support l1 enters a correspond ing recess, in the base of the trame 1 and provides means ior su porting the trame in a manner which enab es the machine to be tilted to either side ot a perpendicular line, while being operated. Whenever it is necessary to entend or Withdraw the brush-supporting arm, the grip-lever 35 is pressed in to thron1 in gear the clutchgthe band-Wheel 26 is then caused to rotate in the direction in which the shaft 20 is turned.
A powder-spraying -device may be conveniently used during the operations of the machine to spray cleansing powder upon the window or Wall. rll`his may be a spray nozzle l2 attached to the end of a exible tube 43 extended in the iv'icinity ot the handle 36, as partially illustrated in lfig. 1. rlhese teatures, however, form no part ot my invention and l have, therefore, not deemed it necessary to fully illustrate the same.
llt will, ot course, be understood that changes ot a more or less detail in character may be made Without departing from the underlying principles oi my invention, which, in the main, contemplates a machine the essential features ol. which consist of extensible brush-supporting members, With means tor rotating the particular brushsupporting arm and adjusting the same in the same power-transmitting operation.
