To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BArA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Smock, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shade Operators, of which the following is a specification;
"This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window shade operators.
An important object of the invention is to provide means for raising and lowering a window shade with the controlling portion of the apparatus conveniently positioned to the Operator.` Y
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the type described that may be easily and quickly applied to the Ordinary Window frame Without neoessitating any changes being made to the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shade operator of the above mentioned type which is strong and durable, and one that may be placed upon the market at a reasonable price. v
Other Obj ects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the "course of the following description;

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention7 thenumeral 5 designates in general a window frame having the usual window sashes 6 slidably mounted in the side vertical portions 7 and 8 which are connected at their upper ends by the top frame portion 9.
Secured to the top frame portion 9, as by the screws l0, is a horizontal supporting plate 1l having at its extreme right end an angularly arranged foot portion 12 which is provided with lugs 13 adapted for engaging in mortise portions 14 formed in the extreme upper ends of the perpendicular supporting plate 15 secured to the vertical window frame portion 7 as by similar screws 10.v
Suitably secured to the horizontal `supporting plate 11 are shade brackets 16 Aadapted for receiving pins or the like carried by the extreme outer ends of the shade roller 17 which has suitably secured thereto the shade 18. Positioned adjacent the eX- tremeV right handend of the shade roller 17 is a bevel gear 19 which is rigidly connected i' vided with a rigidly connected bevel pinion 23 which is constantly in mesh with a bevel gear 24 rotatably retained upon the horizontal axle pin 25 and having secured thereto a handle member 26 which is adapted for actuating the said gea-r 24. Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive there is shown la pinion 27 rigidly secured to the upper end of the perpendicular shaft 22 and constantly engaging a gear 28 which is rigidly connected to a spur shaft 29 suitably journaled on a substantially U-shaped bearing bracket 30, the upper end of the said spur shaft 29 being provided with a beveled pinion 31 that is constantly in mesh with the beveled gear 19 rigidly secured to the shade roller 17.
The operation of the bevel gear 24 by a person grasping the handle 25 will actuate the perpendicular shaft 22 in either direction, in accordance with the direction of operation of the bevel gear 2li, lfor raising or lowering the window shade 18 due to the connection between the pinion 27 formed rigidly with the upper end of the perpendicular shaft 22 with the gear 28 that is rigidly mounted upon the stub shaft 29 having a bevel pinion 31 constantly meshing with the bevel gear 19 formed rigidly upon the shade roller 17. It is very apparent that the entire shade operating mechanism may be removed from the window frame 5 by simply taking out the screws 10 provided for retaining the supporting plates 11 and 15 upon the top frame portion 9 and vertical side portion 7. It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. The combination with a window frame, of angularly arranged supporting plates secured thereto, a shade roller rotatably supported by one of said plates and extending longitudinally of the same, a housing secured to the other supporting plate and extending longitudinally thereof, a drive shaft journaled in said housing, a beveled gear operatively connected to said shaft, operating means for said gear, a second bevel gear fixed to said roller, and a train of gears operatively connecting the roller carried gear and said shaft.
2. The combination with a window frame comprising a top frame portion and side vertical portions, of a horizontal supporting plate having an angularly arranged foot portion secured to the top frame portion, a perpendicular supporting plate interlocked with said foot portion secured to the vertical side frame portion, a shade roller rotatably carried by said horizontal plate, a drive shaft rotatably carried by said perpendicular plate, means for operating said shaft, and means for operatively connecting said shaft with said roller.

In a window shade and operating means wherein the same may be disassembled into two transportable units and wherein the said -units may be quickly applied to any ordinary window frame without changing the construction of the units or frame and wherein the said units are provided with means for insuring proper relative positioning of the same upon a window frame to provide an operative unitary device, said device comprising one unit consisting of a supporting plate, a shade roller rotatably mounted on said plate, a gear carried by said roller, and a train of gears carried by said plate operatively connected to the first mentioned gear; and a second unit consisting of a supporting plate, a housing carried by said plate, a shaft journaled in said housing, means for rotating said shaft carried by said plate, and a pinion carried by one end of said shaft; and means forming a part of each of said supporting plates adapted to cooperate when said plates are secured to a window frame to operatively connect the pinion carried by said shaft with the train of gears carried by the first mentioned supporting plate.

In a window shade and operating means wherein the same maybe disassembled into two transportable units and wherein the said units may be quickly applied to any ordinary window frame without changing the construction of the latter and wherein said units are provided with means for insuring properrelative positioning of the same upon a window frame to provide an operative unitary device, said device comprising one unit consisting of a supporting plate, a shade roller, a shade carried by said roller, means for rotatably mounting said roller upon said plate, a gear carried by said roller, a stubshaft carried by said plate, and a train of gears carried by said shaft with one of said gears constantly in mesh with the gear upon said roller; and a second unit consisting of a supporting plate, a housing carried by said plate, a shaft eccentrically journaled in said housing, means carried by said plate operatively connected to one end of said shaft for rotating the same, and a pinion carried by the other end of said shaft; and means forming a part of each of said supporting plates adapted to cooperate when said plates are secured to a window frame to operatively connect the pinion carried by the shaft in the last mentioned unit with the train of gears carried by the stub shaft in the first mentioned unit.

In a window shade and operating means wherein the same may be disassembled into two transportable units and wherein the said units may be quickly applied to any ordinary window frame without changing the construction of the said unit or frame and wherein the said units are provided with means for insuring proper relative positioning of the same upon a window frame to provide an operative unitary device, said device comprising one unit consisting of a supporting plate, brackets carried by said plate, a roller journaled in said brackets, a gear carried by said roller, a bearing bracket carried by said plate, a stub shaft journaledl therein, a pinion fixed to one end of said stub shaft meshing with the gear on said roller, and a gear fixed to the other end of said stub shaft; and a second unit consisting of a suplporting plate, a housing Secured thereto, a position the stub shaft in the first mentioned shaft joui'naled in said housing, a pinion on unit in longitudinal alinelnent with the shaft one end of said shaft, an axle pin carried by in the second mentioned unit and to place the supporting plate, a gear on said axle the gear carried by the stub shaft in mesh 5 pin meshing with the said pinion, a handle with the second mentioned pinion carried by 15 on said gear for rotating the same, and a the shaft journaled in the housing. second pinion on the other end of said shaft; In testimony whereof I alX my signa`l and means forming a part of each of said tuie. supporting plates adapted to cooperate When 10 said plates are secured to a Window 'frame to THOMAS BATYA.
