Letters Patent No. 111,926, dated February 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldng part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND GRLFFITH, of Wilmington, Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earth-Closets, of which the following is a specification.
Nature of 'the Invention.
My invention relates to that class of earth-closets in which the earth is fed upon the excreta by the raising and lowering of the lid and consists in First, a vacuum-board suspended in the hopper, by means ot' which the earth is prevented from being clogged; and
Second, in the devices by which the earth is fed upon the excl-eta in any desired quantity, as will herealter be more particularly described.
Description of the Drawing.
Figure l is a sectional view of my closet, showing the lid down upon the seat and the position of the various devices prior to the closet being used.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the lid up and the position ofthe devices while the closet is in use.
Specification..
A represents the frame of my closet;
B, the hopper;
U, the lid; and
D, the seat, these parts being constructed. in the usual manner. g
Secured to the back part of the lid C is a hook or eye, a, which serves to operate both the slide l and shoe G through the connecting-rods c e.
The slide H moves hack and forth in grooves immediately below the hopper B and just above the chute F, upon which the earth slides to the pail K.
To the lower end of the chute is pivoted a shoe, G, which serves to spread the earth completely over the bottom ofthe pail when lowered, and to form a chan1- ber, I, at the end of the chute for the reception of the earth as it issues from the hopper when up, until theV closet has been used and the iid closed.
Secured to each end of the shoe is the connectingrod e, which has van elongated loop formed ou its upper end so as to catch in the eye a on the back ot' the seat C.
W hen the scat is being raised or lowered it passes through nearly three-tburths ot' its distance before the eye a reaches either end ot' theloop, when it suddenly reverses the position of the-shoe.
Suspended in the hopper B is a vacuum-board, L, which moves i'eely back and forth oil its pivots.
When the earth is placed in the hopper its downward pressure serves'to pack and clog it at the lower end, where it is small and contracted. As the earth begins to run ont on the opening of the slide Hit causes a movement from one side to the other of the board L, and this movement, producing.;` a vacuum, draws the earth from the sides of the hopper where it is most likely to stick.
M is adoor or opening in the back part of the closet, so as to give access to the various parts for repairs.
Having thus described my invention, Y
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. lhe cover .0, the eye a, the slide H, and rod c,`
in combination with the shoe G and rod e, having a loop formed on its upper end, when all are combined and arranged in the manner described.
2. The vacuum-board L, when arranged to operate substantially as shown.
3. The board L, hopper B, slide H, rods c e, eye a,
lid C, and shoe G, when all are combined as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereby affix my hand.
EDMUND GRIFFITH. Witnesses:
JAMES FLETCHER, WM. SILVER, Jr.
