Description

ttnth Seite tutti cfm EDWIN DOUDEN, OF LYKENS.l PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 H IMSELF AND CHARLES BROOME, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 111,918, dated-February 21,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATORS FOR WHEELS, kPULLEYVS, AND JOURNALS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and mnldng put of the same.
To all'fwhom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN DOUDEN, of 'Lykens, in the county -of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oiler for the Journals of Pulleys and Other Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a-fnll, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilication, in which- The gure is an end view of a wheel-hub, to which my improvement has been attached, partly in section to show the construction.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved oiler for oiling the journals of loose pulleys, drift car-wheels, and for use in other cases where a hub revolves upon a journal, and which shall be simple in construction, conveniently manipulated, and preventing the waste of oil; and
It consists in the construction and composition of: the various parts of the oiler, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the hub of a loose pulley or other wheel, which revolves upon a journal.
In one side of the hub A is formed a hole, recess, or cavity, B, to receive the oil and conduct it to the journal.
The outer orifice of the hole or cavity B is covered by-a lid, U, which is hinged at one edge, and is held down closely by a cam or eccentric, D, which is pivoted to one of the arms or spokes Aof the pulley or wheel in such a position that, when turned down, it may press against the upper side of the forward edge of the lld C to hold it down closely to its seat.
E is a spring attached to the arm or spoke of the pulley or wheel, in such a position that its free end may rest upon the edge of the cam D, which edge isnotched to receive the end of the spring E, said notch being made in such a position that the e'nd of the said spring may drop into the said notch when the cam D is in position to hold the lid tightly closed.
The lid D is made to' shut so closely as to prevent the escape of oil, by running lead into a groove formed. in the hub A aroundJthe cavity B.
.Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters`l Patent- A An improved oiler for the journals of loose pulleys and other wheels, formed by the combination of thehingedlid or cover O, eccentric or cam D, and spring; E, with each other'and with the hole or cavity B leading in through the hub of the said pulley or wheel, substantially as herein shown and described, and for:-
the purpose set forth.
EDWIN DOUDEN.
