To all whom t may concern: I I l l Beit known that I, WILLIAM T. EsTBERe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cups, of which the following 1s a specii cation.`
The object of my invention is to provide an oil cup` of novel, simple and eflicient construction having a removable cap closing the' topkthereof and provided with means to hold it in place; and having an opening in the body portion of the cup through which oil may be supplied in filling the cup, and a movable door closing'said opening.
The invention includes a novel means for clearing dirt from thelling opening and preventing the dirt fromentering the cup, a novel means for holding the cup in place and permitting it tobe `readily applied to or removed from thebody portion, a novel construction and arrangement. of `parts .I whereby a single spring performs the double function of holding the ydoor closed and the cap retaining meansf 41n `operative position,
and various novel features of constructionv and combinations of parts hereinafter fully I described and particularly claimed. v
In the accompanving drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1, lis a perspective view of my improved oil cup. Fig. 2, isa verticalsection thereof, taken through cap retaining lugs. Fig. 3, is a vertical section thereof, taken through the filling openings. Fig. 4, is a side view of the upper portion of y the cup with one of the cap retaining lugs` in the foreground.` Fig. 5, is a side view of the upper portion of thecup with one of the filling'openings in the foreground. Fig. 6, is a horizontal section line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the hollow body portion of the cup adapted to contain the oil. g'Ihe. upper end of the body portion is made' cylindrical in form although, generallyspeaking, thebody portion maybe of any vshape and sizev for its intended purpose. Theupper end of the body portion 2 is closed by a cap 5 having a smooth bottom face fitted againstacorresponding smooth 5 are provided with downwardly-extending` lugsk 7 having their inner faces slidably fitted to the'outer face of the cylindrical upper end of the body portion 2 and adapted to assist in holding the cap 5 centrally upon the body portion 2 and topermit it to turn thereon. Each lug 7 has a horizontal slot 8 therein to receive a pin 9 projecting from thebody portion 2.y The slot 8 in each lug 7 is open at one end to permit the pin 9 to leave Vthe slot when the cap 5 is turned in one direction, and the slot is closed at the oppositeend so that its end wall will form a stop to limit the movement of the cap 5 when itis turnedin the reverse direction. The slots 8 i-n the two lugs 7 are so arranged with respect to each other that when the cap is turned in one direction the slots 8 will leave the pins 9, and when the cap 5 is turned in the reverse direction, the slots 8 will receive the pins 9. vVhen the pins 9 are within the slots 8, the cap 5 is fthereby held down upon the body portion 2 and when the pins 9 are out ofthe slots 8, the cap 5 may be readily removed fromthe bodv portion 2.
Opposite sides of the top of the body portion 2 areprovided with filling openings 10 torreceive the dischargeend of an oil can spoutjin filling the cup with oil. These openings 10 are normally closed bv doors l1 forming downwardlyextending flanges on a horizontal yplate or member 12 located within the cup. This member 12 is pivoted on a centrally-arranged `vertical pin 13 extending downwardly `from the cap 5, the plate or member 12 beingv adapted to turn about the axis of thepin13 and to slide against-the bottomface of the cap 5. In an oil cup, the-combination of a cylindrical body portion adapted to contain the oil and having a lling opening in a side wall thereof, a removable cap closing the top of said body portion, a member carried by said cap and pivoted thereto centrally thereof, a door carried by said pivoted member and adaptedy to close said opening, a lug extending downwardly from said cap and having a slot therein open at one end and closed at the other end, a pin projecting from said body portion and into said slot, saidpin and said lug preventing upward displacement of said cap, and a spring holding said door normally in the closed position and holding the wall of the closed end of said slot normally in engagement with said p1n.

In an oil cup, the combinationl of a body portion adapted to contain theoil and having a filling opening in the top of a side wall thereof, a removable cap closing the top of said body portion, afmovable door adjacent said opening and adapted to close the same and having a part adapted to engage a wall of the body portion when the door is in the closed position and to slide vertically in engagement therewith when the cap is applied to the body portion, said cap having a downwardly-extending lug, said body portion having a part adapted to coperate with said lugv to hold said cap in place, and
a spring pressing said door normally toward its closed position and pressing said lug normally into 'engagement with said part.
8. In an oil cup, the combination of a cylindrical body Vportion adapted to contain the oil and having a filling opening in the top of a side wall thereof, a removable cap closing the top of said body portion, a member carried by said cap and pivoted thereto centrally thereof, a door carried by said pivoted member andadapted to close said j opening, said door having an outwardlyextending projection adapted to engage a wall of the body portion when the door is in the closed position and to slide vertically in engagement therewith when the cap is applied to the body portion, said cap having a downwardly-extending lug, said body portion having a part adapted to coperate with said lug to hold said cap in place, and

10. In an oil cup, the combination of a body portion. adapted to contain the oil and having a filling opening ina wall thereof,
i slot therein open at one end and closed at and a movable door adjacent said opening and adapted to close the same and having an outwardly extending projection adapted to lie adjacent one side wall of said opening when the door is closed, the opposite side wall of said opening having a knife-edge formed thereon adjacent to which the outer face of the door moves when opened.
11. In an oil cup, the combination of a body portion adapted to contain the oil and having a filling opening in a wall thereof, said body portion having a cap provided with a projecting pin, a door carried by a cap mounted on and movable about the axis of said pin, said door being movable to a position closing said opening, and a spring encircling said pin and maintaining said door yieldingly in the closed position.
