1 UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'nnwnnn c. w-arrnns, on ansas CITY, MISSOURI.
,To allwhom it may concern Be it known that I, ZEDW-ARD WA'IYIERS,
:a citizen of :the' United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ;Slip
Joints; and I. do declare the followingitofbe a full, ,clear, and exact description of ithe invention, such as will enable iothers skilled in the art to which ait appertains to make and use the .-same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference 'marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention :relates to slip, joints, and more particularly'to a .joint for use in iconnection .with a dressmakers square, wherein it is desirable to provide two or more rules 1 orpattern members for each square,;1norder to adapt'the square for different uses, the principal object of the :invention beingto provide a joint having members adapted for holding the partsof'thesquarerigidly, and
whereby the members may be easily andquickly connected or disconnected. In accomplishing this object I have Iprovided improved details of structure, t epreferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a plan View of'a dressmakers square provided with a slip jointconstructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged plan view of the joint showing the members partly disconnected in dotted lines.
Fig. III is an end view of the joint. Fig. IV
is an enlargedv section on the line IV-IV,
Fig. II. Fig. V is a detail perspective view of the joint member 17. Fig. VI is a similar View of the car 27. j I
Referring more in detail to theparts: 1 designates'the body of a square, and 2 one of the removable members which may be used in connection with the body, both of the parts beingprovided with cooperating slide joint members of the following construction:
Mounted on the body member 1 is a jointsocket member 3, which is preferably formed in two sections or halves, each of which has a facing channel 1 and edge rail 5, the latter having a lip 6 overhanging the channel part,
which, when themembersare 1n assembled relation, forms a dovetailed groove for carrying the rib of the mating joint section. The outer edge of the socket member 3 is down-cut to provide the fins 7, which pro- I Specification of LettersfPatent. at nt fp 1914 aepplication fileajune-ie, 1911s. :Serial 170375733362.
square section 1. The halves orparts of the socket member 3 are rigidly and ,perma- ,nently connected by rivets 11, and the socket member is fixed to the body of the square by other rivets .12 passing through the ma terialof which the squareis formed, and through the fin wings 9. .Inkorder to further secure the socket member to the body of the 1 square and impart rigidity to the joint, I provide ears .13, each of which comlPllSGS a :body portion which is adapted to seat in a countersunk recess 11 in the body section 1, and has ara'il 15 atits outeredge seated onthe'projecting jointifin 7.
El he jointmember for the body 2 com- 'PIfISBS a body portion 17 having'a neck 18 and head 19, adapted respectively for slidingtravel between theedge rails-5 and in'the socket 4 of the mating joint section 1, the head having edge portions 20101 projection into the dove-tailed grooves in said mating :section to steady the parts when in assembled relation. The body portion 17 is provided with a fin 21 having wings 22 which i are similar respectively to the fin and wings g body member and fin.
In order to firmly seat the ears 27, I prefer to cut the ends of the groove 25 in outwardly converging planes, so that when the rib 26 is seated in its groove it will be locked in place by the abutting edges of the groove.
While I do not wish to limit myself to i such construction, it is apparent that :the joint is particularlyiadapted for a square,
constructed of difl'erent layers of material,
or what is known as a veneer construction, as with such a construction, the inner portions of the bodies may be cut away to form the joint grooves much more conveniently than if it were necessary to split the relatively thin material.
It is apparent that with the parts constructed and assembled as described, the separate members of the square may be easily and quickly assembled or taken apart,
so that a singlebody member may be provided with plurality of'heads' of different patterns, or the like, so that it is not neces'.
sary for a dressmaker to have aseparate complete square for each pattern, It is also apparent thatthis construction is particu- ,larly adaptable for squares, or the like,
I the other, as desired.
"Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A slip joint, comprising head and socket members, each having a fin at'its inner edge, and ears adapted for cooperation with said members to attach same to a carrying structure, the head member having a groove adjacent its fin, and the head ear substantially as set forth. v a
2. A slip joint, comprising head and socket members, eachhaving a tin at its inhaving 'a' portion forseating in said groove,
ner edge, and'an ear adapted {for coopera tion with said members to attach'same to a carrying structure, the ears for the socket having their outer-edges supported on said members, andhaving body portionsovere lying the exposed areas between the fin wlngs. i
section having shoulders atv their outer 4. The combination with separate square sections, each having a grooved end, of socket and head joint sections having fins projected into the slots in the square sections respectively, and ears on said joint sections countersunk inopposite faces" of the square sections. v
In testimony whereof I aflixmysignature in presence of two witnesses.
