Description

O. H. NORTON FOOT STOC/ILSUPPORT. APPLIGAT/ION FILE]? JULY Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
.Zzzoarrzz: CE aria/z THE Noni-us PETF'RS co PHuro I I I vds UNITE TA S EN OFFICE f 'cimnnns I-I. nontroiv, or woncns' 'rna, MAssAcHUsE'rrs, .ASSIGNORTTONORTON GRINDING COMPANY, or woncnsrnn, MASSACHUSETTS, A comeonnrron or [i MASSACHUSETTS.
To all whom it may. concern Be it known that I, CHA LES H. Non'ron, citizen ofthe United States, residing at WVor'cester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful F oot- Stock" Support, of x hich the following is aspecification. v I
This is a division of my application for patent on a oylindricalf grinding machine filed June 6, 1913, Ser. No 772,055'.
n This invention relates to a foot stock support or slide, and the principal object thereof is to provide a construction-in whiclrit I is practically impossiblelfor the sliding surfaces on which the foot stockds supported ,to everwearfout of line.
plished by arranging the slide on whichth'e foot-stock is directly carried to coverthe entire surface of the supporting surface therefor on the grinding machine table. In
i this way a pair of long bearing surfaces are of line on that account. 'This*isan'in1- secured 1 which work one upon the other,
whereby the-wear. is distributed so broadly that no great wear can take place atany point and" thus permit the slide to get out portant improvement over the usual construction in which the tail stock slides back and forth on ways, and if usedvery much in one position will wear thewaysthere'and thus get them out of line.
View showing the position of the postswhen grinding machine having'the usual sliding v Reference is tobe had to-the accompanying drawings which-- I Figure l is a plan of afoot stock slide ance With this invention and showing the centers near together; Fig. 2 lsa' similar the centers .arefar apart; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The invention is shown as applied to a table B, this sliding table having thereon a plate A which is adjustable at the end to change theangle jofthe same with respect to the grindingfwheel C. The parts for supporting the Wheel are not shown herein as they constitute no part of this invention.
The .plate A is also provided with an upward longitudinal projection A having a long inclined guiding surface A for the tail stock slide D. This slide has an inclined surface restingon the surface A and the latter surface constitutes a Y-shaped sup- S pecification of Letters Patent.
and connected parts constructed. in Laccord- FOOT-STOCK SUPPORT.
: ceiving the Water. The upper'in'clined surface of the slide whichsupports the steady rest. has some transversev grooves a for directing the water down into thetrough a. The work F is held between the head center G and tail Y centenHi' Th'ese centers are mounted onthe usual headstock I and tail stock J, the former ofwhich is "directly supported by the plate A, and movable with it. The tail stock, however, iscastjintegrally with theslide D and ofcoursethe ancester necessarily follows absolutely the mo Patented Dec. 1, 1914. i Application filed .Tiily 22, 1914. Seria1:No.' 852,3 87.
tion ofthe slide and keeps its alinementon account ofthe construction of the slide. It isto be observedfthat this slide D hasa length a little, greater than the length of A the supporting surface A. and in fact eictends substantiallyfromk one end ofthe maface A Nearly all of this supportinggsm is face is also used-in supporting the slide in most positions thereof, and consequently the same remarks apply to that.
The slide is provided with a cover plate L of a shape substantially that of the slide and projecting beyond it at the tail end of. the machine for the purpose of keeping the surface A fcovered in the most extreme positions of the slide. This slide is adapted for thesupport of the steady-rest M for engaging the work F. Thus the'steady rest and tail stockmove together and can be adjusted together in some-cases. 1 j j Although I have illustrated and describe% only a single embodiment of the inventio grinding machine, I am well aware of he chine to the other. In this way its bearing in the details of construction without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited in these respects, but
IVhat I do claim is 1. In a grinding machine, the combination of a table for supporting the work, a plate adjustably mounted thereon and provided with a guiding surface thereon ex; tending throughout the greater portion of the length of the table, and a foot stock slide mounted thereon and having a rela-' tively fixed bearing surface covering the en tire guiding surface, whereby the wear will be distributed throughout the length of the guiding surface and will be prevented from causing the slide to get out of line.
2. In a grinding machine, the combination with a table for supporting the work, and a plate mounted thereon and provided with a long guidingsurface, of a foot stock slide mounted thereon and having a, rigid bearing surface substantially as long as the entire guiding surface.
3. In a grinding machine. the combina tion of a plate adapted to'be supported 'on the work table and having projecting .up-
wardly therefrom an inclined longitudinal guiding surface, a head stock at one endof the plate, said guiding surface extending substantially from the head stock to the tail end of the plate, a slide having a wearing under surface fitting and resting on the said inclined surface and covering it substantially throughout its length, and a tail;
stock carried rigidly by said slide.
4. In a grinding'machine, the combination of a plate adapted to be supported on the work table and having projecting upwardly therefrom an inclined guidingsurface, a head stock fixed at one end of the plate, said guiding surface extending substantially from the head stock to the tail end of the plate, a' slide having an inclined Wearing under surface fitting and resting on the said inclined guiding surface' .and covering it substantially throughout its length and provided with a flange extending down from the upper side and engaging the said plate at the upper edge of its inclined surface, and a tail stock integral with the slide. I
5. In a grinding machine, the combination of a plate adapted toxbesupported on a work-table and. having a longitudinal guiding surface thereon, a head-stock at one end of the pla'te', fs aid guiding surface eX- tending substantially from the head-stock to the tail end of the plate, a slide having a wearing surface fitting and restingorr said guiding surface and. covering it throughout the major portion of the length of said guiding surface, and a tail stock carried by said slide... i f
6. In a grinding machine, the combination with a table for supporting the work.
and a plate mountedather'eon' and provided with a long guiding surface, of afoot stock slide mounted thereon and having a bearing surface, afoot stock on said slide and.
a steady rest mounted on the slide and'mom able therewith. Q f a 7. In a grinding machine, the combina tion of a table for supporting the work, a plate 'adjustably mounted thereon and provided with a guiding surface thereon, and a foot stock slide mounted thereon, said my hand, inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
