Description

f@ atea/t dimite.
EMRY BOOKS, OF TRENTON, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent No. 111,875, dated February 14, 1871v IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR OBSTRUCTING ANTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters ?atent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMRY BOOKS, of Trenton, in the county oi' Gibson and in the State of Tennessee, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Obstrncting Ants, and do hereby Vdeclare that the'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beingl had to the acccompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon,'making a part of this specification.
Thenatnre of my invention consistsv in the construction and arrangement of a device to be attached to the legs of safes or other articles, to prevent ants from coming into the same.
In order'to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,.l will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which representsa vertical section of my device.
A represents a rod of suitable Vdimensions,'provided at its lower end with a foot, B, upon which it rests, and a sho'rt distance below its upper end it is provided .with a flange, C.
A hole is to be made in the lower end ot' the safe leg, into which hole the upper end of the rod A is to be inserted, the leg resting upon the flange O.
To the rod A are fastened two cylinders D D', with conical tops, the rod A'passing through the center f them, as shown.
One of these cylinders, D, is smaller than the other D, and within the same, and they are so arranged as to leave a space between them, and .also between the rod and the inner cylinder.
At the lower edge of the outer, larger cylinder D' is attached a flange, E, which extends upward and inward, leaving a space between its upper end and the lower end of the inner cylinder D.
The intention and object of this device are to deceive or bewilder the ants, so that they cannot nd their way up to the safe; but it' necessary, or it' so desired, I may fill the receptacle formed' by the lower end of the outer cylinder D' and the flange E with molasses, tar, or other sticky substance, to catch them when they get so far.
Having thus fully described my invention. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`- rlhe combination of the rod A, cylinders D D', flange E, and with or without the foot B and flange C, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes he'rein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of December, 1870.
